Discussion/Chatter Post
Giggles at the Palace
This is a place for all sorts of off-topic discussion.

You can post anon or un-anon, per your personal preference, as usual.

All I ask is that you stay civil and (hopefully) friendly.

If you also want to use this thread to try to find a beta for a fic, or ask a brit-pick-ish question, I think that would be an acceptable use. Have fun!

So I was wondering is people had writing music? I have recently discovered that the music that really gets my writing groove going is Disney music. Idfk why but it works.

I've a few different collections depending on the genre I'm writing. Heavy, clubby techno for porn, slow and sad for angst, generic rock for less angsty domestic scenes, and so on. In general, though, I prefer instrumental music when writing because lyrics tend to distract me.

20 August Sherlock London Meetup

Hope it's alright to post this here.

You are all specially invited to attend a Sherlock meetup in London on the 20th August.

We will be visiting Speedy's (Where they filmed 221b Baker Street), Regents Park and The Sherlock Holmes Museum in between lots of chatting, squeeing and general fangirling/boying.

Details and a place to sign up so we can get a general gist of numbers can be found here.

It should be a great day and I really hope you can join us!

Hey guys! First time on the chatter post, just wanted to say hi.
Also, anyone from Australia? I'm feeling pretty isolated in my Sherlock love over here, none of my friends enjoy Sherlock, so every time I need to ... well.. fangirl and squeel, I just get "uhuh.." responses back.

HI! And welcome!
I'm an aussie too!

Can someone rec me a good Sherlock comm to hang out in? One that isn't run by crazy people or mods with no sense of humour. I kind of want the feel of all the fabulous people who hang out here, but in a comm style and not a meme.

Unfortunately I think it's fairly telling that there are no replies to this...

Beta etiquette

Hey all.

What's the etiquette involved in having a beta? I just wrote this huge 20,000 word thing and it's my first foray into a new fandom and I want to make a good impression. Thinking of trying a beta for the first time.

But I'm scared. If they change things I don't like, can I change them back? Or would the beta be angry? Do I have to accept all advice or changes? Other than thanking them in the final post what do I do?

Re: Beta etiquette

I would say be really clear about the level of beta'ing you need before you start.
Exchange a couple of e-mails with your beta first, see examples of each other's work.
Is the beta'ing you want quite light, more akin to proofreading? Britpicking? Is it SPAG?
Is it inconsistencies of plot and characterisation? Help with flow and pacing if you feel it's too clunky?
You could ask for nonnegotiable edits (SPAG) to be made in-line and suggestions in the Comment field.
Ask if you could discuss the suggestions after.

Hope this helps!

Holy shit.

Not to be facetious about real world death ect., but where's Sherlock when you need him?

Re: Holy shit.

OMG. And the police, who have been implicated, are treating his death as "not suspicious"? This is horrible.

Not sure about this, so I'll ask before doing anything stupid...

Am I allowed to pimp what could be a fantastic and fun Mystrade fest for fics and artworks?

Re: Not sure about this, so I'll ask before doing anything stupid...

Personally, I don't see why not, since it's the OT chatter post, but I'm not a mod.

I have these married friends that have been super, super nice to me through a recent breakup e.g. bringing over booze, helping me fix my car, etc etc. I was recently very surprised to learn that they have an open relationship - learned this because they invited me into their bedroom for a threesome. I don't want to fuck up our friendship, so I told them that it's not my thing, but that "it's all fine".

Happy Birthday, Benedict!

How about some celebratory pic/gif spam in honour of this day? :DDD

It's Freeze Time, It's Review Time!

Since we're probably all combing the meme for scrumptious fills we might have missed...

Let's do some revving here? Any fills you thought deserved more than the few comments they got? Any WIPs you feel like advertising? Or are afraid might just stop for lack of encouragement?

I'll show the way. These were not written by me or for me, btw:

WIP: "Orchestration" AU, the whole gang as an orchestra (makes sense) with director!Lestrade, first violinist!Sherlock and composer!John, currently trying to keep up with the music. Four parts so far, S/J and possibly Mystrade, and it's really, really good : http://sherlockbbc-fic.livejournal.com/8651.html?thread=38164939#t38164939

Three-Continent John trying to help a helpless Sherlock in the noble art of flirting. Sweet and funny: http://sherlockbbc-fic.livejournal.com/10038.html?thread=52468022#t52468022

L/S, post-Great Hiatus. Lestrade, delirious after three years' fighting Moriarty on "dead" Sherlock's behalf, is barricading himself in his office with a loaded gun. Impressive writing: http://sherlockbbc-fic.livejournal.com/8300.html?thread=50682220#t50682220

Re: It's Freeze Time, It's Review Time!

This is a great idea! I have nothing to contribute because I only ever read things from the meme that have already been recced, but I enthusiastically support other people making recs (for that reason).

Is there an active Harry Potter kink meme anywhere?

Try "Fanlore"

I'm sure there are tons! I'm not currently keeping tabs on one or anything, but I'd recommend googling "Harry Potter fanlore". Wikipedia (I think?) sometimes has these "fanlore" pages for popular works, amd those pages have links to active fan fiction communities, such as kinkmemes or pages on AO3. I can't imagine there not being one for Harry Potter, but I've never actually checked.

Hope this helps!

Pimpin' time!

A fest for fics and fanarts centered around Mycroft & Lestrade!

Prompting is now open and will be until Friday, July 29. Anyone can prompt and anything is allowed, from slash to friendship and any kind of genre so long as Mycroft and Lestrade are the main focus.

From July 30 till August 2 prompts can be claimed. Posting will start on August 3 and everyone will be free to work on their fic/fanart until October 3.

Look at that tempting manip, isn't it... well, tempting? COME, COME! WE HAVE COOKIES!

Because people have been asking/wanting/looking for one, here is a non-abandoned anon meme for Sherlock BBC, located at http://sbbcsharkweek.livejournal.com .

I’m from mainland Europe, and over here it is impossible to open a home’s front door without the use of a key, even if a door is only closed, and not locked. Yet on (American?) television and in (American?) fanfic I keep seeing, and reading about, people opening doors without using a key. I would think this is because not every detail gets shown or mentioned, except that strangers/non-residents do this as well. What am I missing?

Most homes here, you can open the door without the use of a key if the door is unlocked. There's some specialized knobs or even some just plain wonky knobs that'll lock automatically when you shut the door, but for the most part, you can leave it unlocked and come and go as you please.

So, I know a fleshlight flashlight = torch. Is there a different Brit word for a penlight? (i.e., one of these things: http://www.amazon.com/Streamlight-66122-Stylus-Penlight-White/dp/B002E1AUEY/ref=pd_cp_hi_3)

Re: Brit-pick Question

Quite often they're referred to as MagLites, which is a brand rather than a proper name.

or 'small torch'.
