This is a place for all sorts of off-topic discussion.

You can post anon or un-anon, per your personal preference, as usual.

All I ask is that you stay civil and (hopefully) friendly.

If you also want to use this thread to try to find a beta for a fic, or ask a brit-pick-ish question, I think that would be an acceptable use. Have fun!

Rent in London

(Anonymous)
How much would a flat like 221B approximately cost per month? Preferably both the normal cost and whatever Mrs Hudson's "special deal" could plausibly reduce from the price.

Re: Rent in London

(Anonymous)
I just took a look on rightmove.co.uk, and the very cheapest two-bed flats in W1 (including a couple actually on Baker Street) are going for £425/week. That wouldn't include your utilities or council tax, either.

Finding what page a fill is on

I know there is an easy way to do this, but I forget how.

I have the link to the fill's thread. How do I figure out what page in the prompt post it is on other than skimming through each and every page?

For the sake of grammatically correct porn

(Anonymous)
Is it "inside him" or "inside of him"? Which one is correct? Or are they both correct, but used with different meanings?

(A non-native ficcer here, who never really uses "of" in this context and is a bit confused.)

Re: For the sake of grammatically correct porn

(Anonymous)
Most writers/linguists will tell to avoid unnecessary prepositions. You can say either, but "inside him" is grammatically correct, and smoother than the same sentence with the extra prepositional "of". The meaning is the same either way.

American Nonnies?

(Anonymous)
I was wondering, would an American use the term "[someone] pissed/was pissing themselves laughing."?

It's extremely common where I'm from and obviously doesn't mean it literally.
Would an American character say something like this?

/Mycroft has predicted the 'second coming'. That was last month Mycroft and He was kinda a no show, fyi.

Fic/Art Exchanges

(Anonymous)
With Holmestice having just wrapped up, what are some other Sherlock Holmes-themed fic and/or exchanges going on?

There's sherlockmas. 57 prompts were claimed, so there's lots of fic to come but stories won't be posted until the end of July.

How do you cut off an fandom friendship when (a) you have a large number of mutual fandom friends with them and (b) they would probably be super upset to find out you no longer want to talk to them? I know that it's all about doing what you feel is right, etc. but I feel extremely guilty about this and I don't know what to do.

Probably not the best method, but in a similar situation, I just kind of...stopped talking to her. Stopped commenting, blocked her on IMs, started slowly filtering her out of my f-locked posts. Eventually she defriended me herself.

Have any of you ever been looking at prompts at the beginning of whicever prompt post is current, found one you liked and commented to that effect, then realised it was your own prompt? *feels really dumb*

Haha, are you me? =D

...no, seriously, now I'm paranoid that you're actually me.

;-)

(I haven't actually gone through this entire post yet, so feel free to link me if something similar has been put up.)

While I think it is likely that Sherlock is not a virgin my headcanon is that it happened sometime when he was high, since I can't really see him sleeping with someone even for "scientific purposes" when he can't actually stand people all that much.

What are your thoughts on virginity?

Why do you think some people consider it to be a "bad thing" to keep your virginity into your adulthood, unless it is a religious/cultural consideration?

Do you believe it is more likely in an adult of one gender over the other?

Do you think that it is more "ridiculous" for an adult of one gender to be a virgin as opposed to another?

Re: Virginity

(Anonymous)
I have no feelings on other people's sexual choices with other consenting adults, and I don't understand people who do care about others' choices to engage or not engage in sexual activity. Virginity itself, even, is a construct. It doesn't exist beyond how you personally define it.

I think some people consider it a "bad thing" to stay sexually inexperienced because it can make dating difficult as you get older. People tend to presume a certain level of experience when you get to your late 20s/30s and older, and not having that experience can make some people feel awkward or self-conscious. I know this can be true (the only sexually inexperienced, non-asexual person I know is a 33-year-old guy who just grows more self-conscious every passing year with his inexperience, and more awkward around women, and it's become a self-fulfilling prophecy) but it's not a moral judgment, and I don't think "just go out and sleep with someone" is appropriate advice.

I suspect rates of inexperience may be slightly higher among men, but that's just a guess based on the fact that more men are on the Autism spectrum, which can make dating more challenging.

[In my headcanon, Sherlock is not a virgin, but it's exceedingly low on his list of priorities and only comes up when he's with someone who's more overtly sexual. And I don't think he's been with anyone probably since his university days, since he seems about as interested in romance as he is in sex, though I think he has the capacity to become very deeply attached to the right person.]

Personal Issue...

(Anonymous)
I have a best friend that I love more than anything in the world. She is seriously awesome. Problem is, she's too awesome. She's really popular, gorgeous, nice, hilarious, the smartest person in our year, the school show lead and Head Girl. This wouldn't bother me, except she pretty much has everything I want. We are involved in the exact same extra-curricular activities and, while I am good at some things, she is always better than me. In EVERYTHING. I've wanted a lead in show since I started high school- I get shoved into chorus; I want to be Head Girl- I didn't even get nominated; I was 1st in English and won Regional Speech Competitions- she started entering them and now no one even gives me a second look. I used to be known as the 'smart girl' and if I had one thing I was better at than her, I would feel better about myself. But I have nothing. She ruins my self-esteem.

I also feel that she doesn't even want to be my friend. She loves hanging out with me when it's just the two of us, but as soon as someone more popular comes along, she ditches me. She's told me that she'd rather be popular than have the friends she has now, and she's always changing her personality to what is more 'acceptable'. She always puts herself down so that others will compliment her, which drives me nuts because when I say the same thing people just ignore me.

I have manic depression and I see a therapist every week, but my therapist thinks my friendship woes are all in my head, which isn't helping, and I'm getting so tired of being miserable.

What should I do? I've tried to talk to her before about how I feel, but she always makes me feel stupid and accuses me of being clingy- she knows how to win an argument. I really don't want to lose my friend or my sanity, but I can feel myself slowly losing grip of both- what should I do?

(Sorry about TMI and all that. This comm seems really nice and accepting, so I thought I'd give it a shot)

Re: Personal Issue...

(Anonymous)
Who says they'd rather be popular than have their friends? That's appalling. She sounds like a fake, and you'd be better off trying to make some real friends than wasting your time on her.

Is anyone else getting a repeating adult content notice when they try to access the last page?

I am over 14 LJ!

YES. Click through, and when it throws you back to the warning, F5. It usually goes away when I do this.

Fixable, but more annoying than Lestrade thinking.

Tolkein novels will never not look ridiculous to me when put to film (but at least it spares the plodding unpleasantness of the prose).

But, hey, he does look like a Hobbity Hobbit, so I suppose they've hit the mark. It makes me laugh, though.

hot mess

(Anonymous)
Ok, I've looked this up on Urban Dictionary and everything.

Hot mess - this is a compliment? It's appeared in a number of prompts.

To me, it would be how I appear after running - ie - hot, sweating and a mess, ie untidy, hair plastered to face, bright red, wheezing. Not sexy.

And mess on its own means a turd.

Is it hot as in sexy, does mess now mean something positive?

Re: hot mess

(Anonymous)
Not at all a compliment where I'm from. Similar to calling someone a trainwreck. Imminent downward spiral of badness. Lindsey Lohan is like the perfect example.

Why, oh why does LJ systematically de-log me when I ask for the last page of any meme post? Is there a way to prevent this?

(I want to see the new prompts, damnit! It's my work pause!)

Re: Damn my log!

Posting a comment seems to work, as does f5 on the confirm age page.

But yes, it's been doing it to me as well.
