This is a place for all sorts of off-topic discussion.

You can post anon or un-anon, per your personal preference, as usual.

All I ask is that you stay civil and (hopefully) friendly.

If you also want to use this thread to try to find a beta for a fic, or ask a brit-pick-ish question, I think that would be an acceptable use. Have fun!

Fic Advice

I have a little conundrum.

So, I have this OT3 that is quite rare in this particular fandom. It's MMF where M1/M2 is one of the most popular fanon ships and M2/F is a canon ship.

A friend and I also ship M1/F, which was canon as well, only not well received by most of the fandom and not very popular but we love it all the same. I wrote a fic of M1/F dedicated to my friend (b/c she prompted it when I asked for prompts /not relevant) and it's a good fic, I like it and she liked it, all very happy and such.

Now, I've always wanted to write my OT3 fic and I've always envisaged it to be gloriously porny and angsty, ending in a delightfully happy little triangle.

My conundrum is that this supposed OT3 fic is a continuation of the fic I wrote my friend and she's not into my M1/M2 ship. Now I don't know if I should note that the fic is a sequel to the previously written one even though in my head it is, because there will be references to it. I mean, I don't want her to feel like I'm belittling the fic I wrote her or anything but I also want to be in line with the head-canon I have for my OT3, which is the first fic leading into the to-be-written one.

Sorry for the tl;dr but I don't know what to do.

Re: Fic Advice

You could note that the fic you wrote her was intended and works as a stand alone, but if any readers want to read it first then they'll get more from the new fic.

Or you could just ask her if she minds? She'll probably be more okay with it than you seem to think, unless you plan on forcing her to read it.

Wait, is it really BBC!canon that John plays the clarinet?

I've seen this loads but I thought it was a fanon meme. Can anyone point it out to me in canon? Is it in interviews or behind the scenes or just something Martin Freeman said for lols? I DON'T KNOW WHY I NEED TO KNOW THIS SO DESPERATELY BUT I DO.

I think it's in TBB, at the end of the interview with Sarah. He says he played the clarinet at school.

Any body got any tricks on dealing with stress in public?

I open mouth to consciously stop clenching jaw, inserting tip of tongue between teeth if necessary, stop and count to ten, with a sort of low rent biofeedback mantra (which tends to work; I just will myself to be calmer and remember whatever's driving me crazy doesn't really matter).

Is it just me or has this fandom done a complete 180 in terms of who tops/bottoms? I remember when the fandom was just starting out, it was mostly Sherlock topping, but now everywhere I look there's John topping. Not that I'm looking to start a debate (or complaining, since god knows I love bottom!Sherlock), but it's just odd, that's all. Was there some kind of fandom catalyst I don't remember? Haven't most of the big fandom works (Wordstrings, for example) been top!Sherlock?

I think it's more a matter of:

"Hm, there's a lot of X topping, I'll write/prompt some Y."

Then it changes to:

"Hm, there's a lot of Y topping, I'll write/prompt some X."

Since, to my knowledge, this is a calm fandom that doesn't put much emphasis on the importance of positions*, I feel this is like a natural cycle. People get bored/used to the dynamic and want to change things up. It may also be an influx/decrease of certain kinks, tastes, etc.

*There are some CRAZY fandoms that are really split on positions and where swapping is non-existent. Sigh.

thoughts on prompts

Do more complex prompts have more of a chance of getting a response, ot are they too prescriptive?

Or is it a case of a prompt can be a couple of words, but if they're the right couple of words people are inspired?

I think that by part 16, most variations of Character A/ character B : sexual activity C have already been filled. Do prompts need to get more complex as the meme gets bigger?

Re: thoughts on prompts

It's a toss up. More detail means less likelyhood of repetition, but it's also daunting to try to fill something that's too detailed when the prompter seems to have a very specific story in mind.

There's no telling what's going to be muse bait though.

Podfics - accent preferences?

So I'm interested in doing podfics, but I'm American. I don't want to try and ape a British accent because I wouldn't get it right and it would sound stupid. Would it be off-putting to listen to a podfic done in an American dialect? Just regular, newscaster American, not a wild regional accent.

I guess, I'm wondering if the believability would be markedly reduced if I read it in my normal accent. My own personal preference in podfic is readers with British accents, but that could be because I haven't heard anything else. So, I thought I'd do a survey before jumping into a project!

Re: Podfics - accent preferences?

Have a listen to Candle_beck's podfics. I love the way she suggests the characters, whilst never attempting a cod-English accent. American accents are sexy to British ears, so podfic away. :D

jung personality tests, anyone?

Hey hey hey! Got some free time? What are you guys?

(Hope this hasn't been posted before...)

I'm ESFJ- "The Caregiver" apparently. :)

Re: jung personality tests, anyone?

We did a bit of it back on p24 of this thread but it was more character focussed.

I'm INTJ: the mastermind(!) but only the T is a strong preference, I've also been ENTP and ISTP on other versions of the test.

Honest question,

when Mycroft captcha gives you a picture of a horse, are you supposed to type in 'horse'? (Though I have a sneaking suspicion it was a chess piece, in which case...uh whatever the horse is called in chess is what you're supposed to type?) If you get a Chinese character or arabic, are you supposed to type with those particular fonts, or would a romanized version do?

When that happens, you hit the re-fresh Captcha button until you get something readable and typable. :D

Interesting article on the bbc (and series of radio programmes on BBC world service) on how soldiers deal with killing.

May be useful for John-centric fics.

I'm looking for PDFs...

Going out of the country and can't take my computer with me, but would love some good audiofic! Any suggestions and links ASAP would be very appreciated!

I know this is not a place for this kind of question but,.

Do you guys know where is the 'main comm' for Star Trek fandom?

Not pairing or genre specific.(For TOS, or Reboot)

Re: I know this is not a place for this kind of question but,.

I would guess startrek_tos or classic_trek for TOS, and startrek2009 for the reboot. People in those comms might know of other general comms I don't, though, since I don't follow either fandom very closely.

oh god guys tell me there is another word for vagina besides "cunt"

and i don't mean like "peach fish" or "beef curtains" fuck that

If anyone is trying to picture a female Sherlock, I have the perfect actress. Currently starring in the BBC's fantastic new drama The Shadow Line with Chris Eccleston, Stephen Rea, Anthony Sher, Rafe Spall, Lesley Sharpe and Chiwetel Ejiofor - Claire Calbraith is a perfect light-eyed, dark-haired version of Sherlock.

Pics here for ref (http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=clare+Calbraith&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&hl=en&tab=wi&biw=1920&bih=908)

Sorry, that should have been a link, don't know why it isn't

I've got this friend, who I think of as a sibling and have for years. My personal parts have suddenly decided that they want that now with a side of chips and chocolate sauce on top. This is annoying.

I know for a fact friend is not interested at all in that sort of relationship due to a humourous misunderstanding a while back, and I don't want to change the relationship we have in any way, even if my friend was into it. How do I get my glands to STFU?

Find someone else?

So I read Lucybun's *really really hot* mustache!John pr0n earlier and now, whenever I read any fic involving John (ESPECIALLY porny ones), I see him with the bad, bad 1970's pedo mustache from the pic she had with the fic.

*snicker* It's not a bad thing. Just...funny in a "John with gold necklaces, black socks and rockin' the Burt Reynold's 'stache" sort of way.

Hopefully this clears up by tomorrow.

Re: Lip Ferret Ahoy!

Hehe! 70s porn John is kinda hot, it has to be said. That pic is actually the first to convince me that MF could have been a member of the armed forces and not just a poncy actor pretending to have a limp. Ah, suspension of disbelief, how does it work?
