Dear memers,

As an individual who has been directly affected by the tornadoes here in North America, I have been asked how people can help. Now that I have access to the internet, I am trying to spread the word.

MODS: If this is inappropriate, please delete.

Areas of Missouri were hit by yet another tornado. If you would like to give aid, in the US you can text JOPLIN to 864833 and ten dollars will be added to your bill.

The Salvation Army asks those who want to help to visit www.salvationarmyusa.org or call 1-800-SAL-ARMY. Donors may text “GIVE” to 80888. Checks may be made out to The Salvation Army Disaster Relief, P.O. Box 100339, Atlanta, GA 30384-0339. Monetary donations will ensure The Salvation Army can meet the most immediate needs of those impacted by disaster.

The Red Cross depends on financial donations to help in times of disaster, both here in the United States and around the world. Those who want to help can make a donation to support American Red Cross Disaster Relief. To make a donation, visit www.redcross.org, call 1-800-RED CROSS or text the word REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation. Contributions may also be sent to your local American Red Cross chapter or to the American Red Cross, P.O. Box 37243, Washington, DC 20013

Americares provides medicine, water and other supplies to shelters, food banks and healthcare providers: http://www.americares.org/

http://www.directrelief.org/ is providing a variety of relief to all affected areas.

Each of these organizations have been researched through Charity Navigator and are deemed reliable and trustworthy.

British geography?

Hello Brits, can someone help me out with some geography? Specifically - I'm looking for an army base some distance away from London, but not so far that the journey by car would be more then a few hours. Actually, it doesn't have to be an army base exactly, just some place where the presence of the goverment or armed forces wouldn't be a surprise. I'd prefer some location with high walls or some other types of zombie defense :x

Re: British geography?

Most places are within a few hours of London but very few have high walls.

Is a complete survey of all camps, historical and current.

Re: Looking for..

I do believe these are the first two you're looking for:

1) http://sherlockbbc-fic.livejournal.com/7277.html?thread=36363885#t36363885

2) http://sherlockbbc-fic.livejournal.com/2262.html?thread=2157782#t2157782

Third person omniscient?

This is a bit of an odd request, but does anyone know of good books/fics that use the third person omniscient? I just realized that it seems almost everything I've read recently has been third person limited/POV type writing that I've forgotten what third person omniscient is even supposed to read like.

And in case anyone's curious about the reasoning behind this strange request, I've just been thinking about one of the things that take me out of a fic, which is just swapping POVs every paragraph from character A to character B. I can deal when it's longer narratives changing between characters, but if it's every paragraph, it gives me whiplash. But it occurs to me that maybe the authors are trying for an omniscient POV instead?

Re: Third person omniscient?

Not a book/fic, but third person omniscient *is* utilize in the movie "Stranger Than Fiction".

Inspired by the above comment re perspective/third person

I'm working on a LOT of WIPs right now but have an idea a-brewin' for a fic after I have these squared away. The thing is... the idea keeps 'coming out' as first person. What do y'all think of first person POV in fic? In non-fan fic?

I'm kind of torn. I usually don't like fics in first person but this bunny is nibbling at my heels to be written as such so I'm just taking a poll, as it were, re POV preferences in general.

Re: Inspired by the above comment re perspective/third person

I'm actually good with all POVs. There isn't one that annoys me (although there are times when my mood messes with me and I can't read a particular one, but it doesn't last long). :)

What's the BBC!canonicity of Molly being a fan of Glee? It wasn't in the episodes, but was it in the tie-in material or is it just fanon?

Re: question

It's from her blog, I believe. She talks about watching Glee with Jim and Toby (her cat).

As we have to wait all summer for more Sherlock, I'm wondering: What else are you guys watching (either currently on or marathoning or whatever)?

There are clearly some Doctor Who fans here (myself included!). I'm also currently DYING over Game of Thrones. Dying, it is so good. But other than that I'm kind of at a loss now that the US network season is over. I guess I'm kind of looking forward to True Blood as cracky fun full of pretty people, though the ungodly number of plotlines last season kind of turned me off. I'm also hesitantly looking forward to the new Torchwood, but I was never that in to it.

Any recs? Squees to share? Annoyances to share? Etc.

I'm really into Game of Thrones, too, much to the delight of my fan-of-the-books boyfriend, and as of this week it's the only current series that I'm following other than Doctor Who. I'm working my way through DVDs of Breaking Bad, and Netflix recently added Rocky and Bullwinkle to streaming, so I've been watching that while I craft or do housework. Yeah--the show about the guy with terminal cancer who becomes a meth kingpin and the 1960s cartoon about Moose and Squirrel with bad puns. I am a girl of varied tastes.

I will be watching Torchwood, with my usual low expectations for that series. It's definitely a very guilty pleasure.

Fic format

I quite like using a 'snapshot' format when writing fic, like little bits from different times/places etc, that all together form the story. I suppose 5+1 fics fall under this category too.

However, I hesitate to use that format sometimes because I worry that I'm over-using it, if that makes sense? I can think of 2 fics I've written in this style but I get a little paranoid that people will find it annoying if I use it too many times.

Am I being silly and just go ahead with it?

Also, is there a particular format that you love using when you write?

Re: Fic format

"Snapshot" sounds like a really good name for that format, by the by.

I'm pretty fond of the style as well and have written maybe one or two like it. Don't know if it's just me, but I always have to write fics of this format in present tense. Only longer, more "solid" kind of prose pieces get written in past tense, otherwise I usually pick the present.

So I'm trying to kick my pretty ass into posting one by Monday while focusing on my current WIP. (Ah, the joys of self-contradiction.)

And have just realized that...

a) I've systematically avoided archiving, and often reading, the Enter-John-Exit-Lestrade fics. You know, Sherlock dumping Lestrade more or less tactfully or Lestrade pulling a gentleman's number and leaving first (sometimes for a Sherlock-free happy ending). Still, I think they should be represented. So if you've read some really good takes on this trope, could you link them to me?

b) I can only find one fanart so far (Pickpocket by Izu). Any other finds, fellow shippers? If not, I know what my very first post-freeze prompt will be.^^

Thank you!

Sadly, I can't think of any others. So if you don't prompt any, I probably will XD

Holmescest recs?

I'm somehow really in the mood for some dirtier sort of brotherly love. Just for that extra flavour of special hell/forbidden fruit, I've a real affinity for fics where they're both a bit younger and possibly still living at home (or at least Sherlock is) and going at it behind Mummy's back.

So if anyone could rec me some of their off-meme favourites or fills not yet archived in delicious, that'd be extremely swell. Or, hell, even some unfilled prompts that especially strike your fancy, in case I/someone else gets inspired.

Re: Holmescest recs?

Personally, I like starjenni's Holmescest. She's written some when they're younger, and some at their ages in the show.

So, inspired by one of the rather passive-aggressive prompts on Page 57, what are the meme's thoughts on the general maturity levels present in fic?

As far as I'm capable of taking kinks, I do very much have one for older men. And while personal experience has shown me that this is not even close to the case more often than not, I do tend to associate a higher maturity level to older guys (my previous flatmate was twice my age, and still a goddamn child in every aspect, though).

Maybe because I tend to avoid the slash in this fandom, I miss this raging immaturity represented in fic, though. Most of what I read seems either fairly consistent with canon, or is so cracked out that I can forgive the occasional slip of character.

But while I expect Sherlock to occasionally behave like a six year old, I do tend to be put off when he starts behaving like your Disney-typical 13 year old girl (I don't see it often, but I'll back click as soon as I do).

There was a coherent, well-structured point in here somewhere, but I appear to have lost it some time between hitting 'new comment' and now.

I think in general the maturity level depicted in the characters - particularly in terms of relationships - is pretty good, especially compared to what I've come across in other fandoms.

Balancing Sherlock's immaturity is tricky. I have seen some where the authors seem to have a bit of an issue with the... colder ... aspects of his character and compensate by amping up the immaturity instead. It's not my cup of tea and pushes into OOC territory for me so it's usually a back-button trigger, but each to their own. *shrug*

Sheer-luck Holmes?

"A younger brother of famous detective Sherlock Holmes tries to steal his brothers glory by solving an important case. An eccentric Scotland Yard detective and a lovely but suspicious actress assist him."

DEAR GOD, WHAT IS THIS? Can it be as awful as it looks?

("Younger", Mycroft, sure. STOP TROLLING YOUR BROTHER.)

Re: Sheer-luck Holmes?

I haven't seen it, but given that it's a Gene Wilder spoof, I'm sure it's decently funny and doesn't take itself at all seriously.
