This is a place for all sorts of off-topic discussion.

You can post anon or un-anon, per your personal preference, as usual.

All I ask is that you stay civil and (hopefully) friendly.

If you also want to use this thread to try to find a beta for a fic, or ask a brit-pick-ish question, I think that would be an acceptable use. Have fun!

Ok, I wasn't sure where to ask this but I figure the Chatter Post is as good as any.

Can anyone point me towards some child John and Sherlock prompts? The sort where they meet when they're both children.

I really want to write some fic like that but I need a more concrete idea to go off of so I figured the meme would be a good place to look, but there's kind of a lot of prompts to shift through and I get bored after the first 20-or-so pages.

Thank you kindly, anons! :)

Sorry it's not much. I know there are lots of other ones out there. Hopefully someone will post more, or you'll see something you want to write. Good Luck!

I've got a date like social event today in 6 hours. I've not slept in 24 hours. I'm going to try and get a nap in now, but does anyone have any advice for not looking like a zombie? (Without using makeup. I don't own any.)

warm, wet (like so wet they've been used) tea bags over your eyes while you nap. or cucumber slices or a cool compress to help tame dark circles. Splashing your face with cold water helps "wake you up" and get circulation going so you don't look tired.

I have to know, what's wrong with fanfiction.net? I've seen three comments about it in the past week, but the context has been too vague for me to actually garner any distinct meaning.

Just wondering. I feel very out of the loop.

On the reader's end, the userbase skews younger than other archive sites and it is often the first hit for new writers looking for an easy place to upload, so it has a reputation for having a much higher ratio of crap fic. (True in some fandoms, less true in others; in one of my small fandoms all the best stories are on ff.net, except for a couple on AO3 from Yuletide.)

On the writer's end, the interface limits your toolbox and won't let you use a lot of basic formatting, and the site does not allow explicit fic. A lot of writers (self included) have left the site because it feels patronizing to not be trusted with, for instance, the use of three asterisks as a story divider (not to mention the time wasted with frustrating reformatting) and/or because they write a lot of porn.

Otherwise, there's nothing inherently wrong with it. I still check it for new fics in my tiny fandoms, but when it comes to things like Sherlock, my time is better spent trawling AO3 or LJ.

I was wondering how/when do you use these exactly?

best site I've found that explains that rule.

Trigger warning: suicide

(Anonymous)
I'm suicidal. No one knows, except I guess now all of you.

I'm terrified that if I tell someone, it's just going to make everything even worse. That same terror is what's keeping me here, because what if I attempt it and it doesn't work, and then people will know.

I don't even know what I'm asking here, or why I'm writing this. Just, I think about this every day, and I'm too scared to talk to anyone, and too scared to kill myself, and it feels like it's choking me. I guess I needed to say something, even if it's anon to a bunch of other anons.

Re: Trigger warning: suicide

(Anonymous)
My husband is suicidal. I live in terror every day that he will kill himself. I do what I can for him, but he refuses to see a psychologist or take medication or really do anything positive towards bringing himself back from the brink. If he does kill himself, I'll be devastated beyond words. Even now the idea of him being gone from my life shreds me to pieces. I have never felt this utterly helpless in my life. I have literally no control over it.

There are people in your life who will be destroyed if you destroy yourself, anon. If you can't see a way to get help for yourself, please, seek help for them. I wish my husband would.

Mummy Holmes first name

(Anonymous)
Is it ever mentioned in canon? Is there a fanon preference?
if not, I need an unusual but real feeling name for a woman of her presumed age and background. Can any lovely anons help me out for my fic?

Mycroft is saying Zelia Nymepord. Not sure...

Re: Mummy Holmes first name

There's strong fanon that says her name is Violet (I think that comes from one of the books *about* Holmes and not Doyle really) but I don't see a problem with giving her a different name if your story calls for such. behindthename.com is a great source for that sort of thing. Seriously--I get sucked into reading all of the different names there lol because some are just REALLY out there and unusual.

Fic search

(Anonymous)
I'm looking for two stories. The first one has Sherlock faking his death in a fire and then leaving his skull to John.

The other one is a story where Sherlock is diabetic and hasn't told John. Then collapses on a case.

I hope anyone here can help me find them.

BAFTAs

So far...

Sherlock has won for Best Drama Series :-D
Martin Freeman has won for Best Supporting Actor :-D

Livetweeting @BAFTA

Re: BAFTAs

(Anonymous)
... and I've just noticed that BAFTA is livetweeting about an hour ahead of the BBC broadcast. Didn't realise, so massive apologies if I just spoiled that for some of you.

Martin is apparently "chuffed", bless him :-D

Supermarket

(Anonymous)
I'm sure this has been discussed before, but for the life of me I can't find where.

Would any of the characters use the term "supermarket"? Or would it just be "grocery"? Or "grocery store"? Or am I on the wrong track?

Re: Supermarket

(Anonymous)
British English is supermarket.

I'm doing two things that I almost never do. Asking for a quick beta because I'm a bit high on painkillers as I finish my Holmestice (cutting it close, I know. But I was hoping to be able to put it off until my bit of oral surgery next week, until I noticed that said oral surgery is the day before these things are due).

It probably won't be done until sometime later tonight (PST), but I'm throwing this up now so I can hopefully have a volunteer by the time I finish.

I didn't want to work on this with a face full of pain, and now I sort of suck for putting it off for so long. DX

OH MY GOD, MY PROMPT IS THE MEME QUOTE! I feel so honoured, I think! XD

Help! I've lost a prompt!

(Anonymous)
Roughly a million years ago (maybe part 8-ish?), someone prompted something along the lines of: Sherlock is half-fish/merman/whatever, lays a million eggs in the bathtub, and then orders John to fertilize them all.

At least that's what I remember. I hope I haven't completely hallucinated this. Anyway, does any kind anon happen to recall where this prompt might be located? And, god, do I hope someone filled it.

Re: Help! I've lost a prompt!

(Anonymous)
I don't know it but I just spat wine all over the monitor, so thankyou :D

Genre

(Anonymous)
In Sherlock fandom, what is your favorite genre to read? Are you a H/C fan? Are you only here for the porn? Do you like horror stories, detailed mystery fic? Or are you just looking for a fluffy story with bunnies and jumpers and snuggling?

Authors/artists, what do you like to write/draw best?

'EVERYTHING EVER JUST GIVE ME MORE' is an acceptable answer btw.

Re: Genre

(Anonymous)
I can only write three things: creep, crack, and crossovers. (hi people who know who I am now, shut up I'm doing my portfolio, honest). I can do some casefic if it's a background but I often get too hung up on details.

For reading, I adore a good horror, and AUs are my ambrosia. The other night, I physically couldn't get to sleep until I'd reread etothepii's Good Omens AU. Any fic that has decent cases or accurate medicine immediately gets a thumbs up from me. H/C can be good and I'm known to dip my toe in a metafic every now and again. If you want to win my lifelong love, something with chest injuries or vivisection of the chest is my bizarrest and strongest kink.

I personally don't like heavy pornfic or overly fluffy fic, but people are welcome to read and write it and I will make exceptions if it is recced to me.

Is that news about The Hobbit true? About Benedict?

Re: (spoilers for The Hobbit casting)

That certainly seems to be the rumor. Ha. I wonder what he's been cast as.
