This is a place for all sorts of off-topic discussion.

You can post anon or un-anon, per your personal preference, as usual.

All I ask is that you stay civil and (hopefully) friendly.

If you also want to use this thread to try to find a beta for a fic, or ask a brit-pick-ish question, I think that would be an acceptable use. Have fun!

Writers - when you bring Moran into the BBCVerse, do you have an actor you picture in the role? Who is it?

Re: Moran

(Anonymous)
I didn't realize till you asked, but in my mind he's a dead ringer for the Brigadier.

Oh, for goodness sake.

There was a prompt ... somewhere, something like:

SALLY: Psycho.
SHERLOCK: Sociopath.
MYCROFT: Autistic, actually.

Anyone know where that was? I went through the filled prompts post but either I'm misremembering or suck at control F'ing.

How Did They Do It?

(Anonymous)
Let's make a list! I love lists.

Look at a photo of Benedict Cumberbatch. Look at a photo of BBC Sherlock.

BC is a handsome fellow. But BBC Sherlock is beautiful!

How much and what types of make up, lighting, posing, filters, etc do you think this transformation entailed? Let alone BC's body language, vocal inflection, etc?

1. Hair cut and color, obviously.

2. dyed eyebrows.

Re: How Did They Do It?

Lots of makeup definitely, to account for the pale featureless vampire look, oh and mascara. In non Sherlock pictures he has many more colour variations going on on his face. They use airbrush makeup in Torchwood, for smoothness, so it's possible that's what they use in Sherlock and other shows too.

It's really fascinating to try to figure out how the makeup was used and for what purpose, for any show really.

I'm a computer dumb-dumb. I'm also on a Mac.

These directions the mods so helpfully posted...

IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR SOMETHING SPECIFIC... a good way to do this is to simply go to "Find" on your browser (Ctrl + F) and search for buzzwords. (i.e. "tentacles" or "wings" or "cat.") Generally our paraphrased prompts will include buzzwords from the original prompt.

I can't figure it out. Is it the same for a Mac and I just need to drink some milk, Sally and figure it out? Or is there a difference. And...this is so embarrassing...what's my browser and what's the find?

I feel like my 83 year old mom calling me about DVD help and I finally realized she couldn't GET THE BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN DVD JEWELCASE OPEN!

Your browser is the program you use to brows the internet with. i.e. the window that you're seeing this text in right now. For a mac you need to press apple and F, that button should be right next to the space bar with an apple drawn on it. The find bar will show up at the bottom of your browser window.

Another way to open up the find bar, is once you have the browser window open, go to the top of the screen, open the Edit tab and you can scroll down for the Find function. To the right of the Find lable you should see the keyboard shortcut that corresponds to it. You can find keyboard shortcuts like that for many functions, or use them straight from the bar at the top.

I have a MacBook Pro, hope this is helpful for the mac you're using.

I got a kitten for Christmas! XD That is all.

I'm one of those people that can't write unless I have the exact perfect music playing in the background. I've got little mixes for John&Sherlock, and one for John/Lestrade, but I was wondering what songs everyone associates with the various characters and ships?

My ultimate Sherlock song is Arcade Fire 'Wake Up'. Everything gets a bit more ridiculous from that moment on ;)

Please, share yours as well notkerouac.

Britpick, kind of -- I've noticed that in fics based on British fandoms, when salutations are abbreviated, they become "Mrs Hudson" and "Mr Smith" without the period marker -- does the same go for professional salutations? Such as "Dr Watson" and "Capt Harkness"? I noticed the BBC blog for John has him abbreviated as "Dr. John H. Watson" -- I AM CONFUSED. And what about middle initials?

Do you alter your English based on the fandom for which you're writing or are you just curious?

Beekeeping

(Anonymous)
Any apiculture enthusiasts on the meme? Anyone become interested in it via canon? Tell us your story.

My plans is to acquire a hive when I've got a place of my own (hopefully soon!). The more I learn about it, the more fascinating it gets. Earlier today I was listening to an NPR segment about bees and honey, incredible stuff from a biology/chemistry perspective.

Re: Beekeeping

(Anonymous)
I'm absolutely terrified of bees. That buzzing sound...D:>>>

Sempli Ranger - No, Mycroft, I wouldn't do much better in the military, either.

Does it seem like there are a lot more tetchy anons about, or is it the holiday effect? Can we get a group hug or something?

Everybody's probably had too much family togetherness.

Group hug sounds good to me, though! =D

Um, after I've read a comment complaining about how grammatically incorrect a certain prompt is in a rather, well, rude way, now I'm wondering how many of you are actually non-native and native speakrs and what do you honestly think when you see prompts that contain lots of grammatical errors in them?

Native speaker with an English degree here. As long as I can tell what the gist is, it's all good. That particular prompt was fine as it was and understandable.

I think the person commenting about grammar on that prompt is deliberately trying to piss people off, as there have been a few similar in tone comments left on other prompts today as well. Best thing for it is to ignore them and don't waste any time on them.

Headcanon! What's yours?

(Anonymous)
For those not in the know, it's your own personal canon for unexplained details, future happenings, little-seen or unseen characters, and other miscellaneous things. Some bits of mine:

- Sherlock is asexual and panromantic. Only three people in his lifetime ever cross the line from person-I-must-tolerate to person-I'm-interested-in: Victor Trevor, Irene Adler, and John Watson. Only one of these ever reciprocates. He's also kinky as fuck, though in a non-sexual way; he feels the need to control/be controlled and to hurt/be hurt (whether he's a dom or a sub is flexible to me) as a way of expressing his feelings for his partner, and it's a chance to let go and allow himself emotional release as well.

- John says he's straight because it's easier than explaining that he's bi but would only ever date women; however, if he did fall in love with a man, it wouldn't be a huge shock. He mostly doesn't want to have to tell Harry about it; she'd never let him live down the fact that she had him pegged as bisexual since he was about sixteen. Speaking of Harry, they do talk now and then, but she's been too untrustworthy and hurt him too often for them to ever have a solid relationship again. Sometimes John wishes he could confide in her about his time in Afghanistan, but he knows she'd never really listen.

- Harry drinks, but she's never told John about her wife's habits. When Clara got clean, Harry didn't, and Harry left her out of stupidity and jealousy; Clara still gets lonely, sobbing voicemails from her, but she doesn't pick up the phone anymore. Someday she wants to go back and help Harry, but her sobriety is still so tenuous she doesn't trust herself to succeed without slipping up. She's thinking about going to John for help, but he seems so happy now that she can't justify it.

- Molly has a dark side. Though she's never acted on it (even on animals; she wouldn't hurt Toby for the world), she sometimes wonders what it would be like to hold organs when they're fresh and warm instead of from morgue freezers. She also has just as difficult of a time with social interactions as Sherlock pretends to, except since she's quiet and mousy, people just think she's a little pathetic instead of hating her like they do him. Secretly, she despises it; it feels like a mask she's grown too accustomed to and can never truly take off. So when Jim from IT swans in and treats her like she says aloud all the hidden things she keeps inside, she's alarmingly susceptible to his manipulations. See, I find it curious that Molly a) enjoys working in a morgue, b) isn't disturbed by Sherlock's experiments (the riding crop!), c) is attracted to Sherlock, and d) is attracted to Moriarty, who is - yeah. I feel like there's more than meets the eye, there.

- "Anthea" is a former computer hacker with a weakness for designer clothes and expensive dinners; she's as queer as a three dollar bill (or a three pound note? Is there an equivalent phrase in British English?), though she practically stopped having any relationships at all once she started to work for Mycroft. When the salary difference between hacking and being the right hand of the British government was made clear to her, "Anthea" had no trouble making the descision to switch sides, as it were. She also has prosopagnosia*, and gives every person she'll meet more than once a different name so she'll know who she's talking to once they address her.

*I got that idea from a fic, but I've lost the link so can't credit. If you have it, I'd love to reread!

The other characters are harder for me to pin down; I have vague ideas for Lestrade and Sally, but Mycroft and Sarah are complete ciphers to me. I've seen other authors handle them beautifully, but I have no idea how to write them or what their backstory is.

When it comes to ACD!canon characters in the BBC 'verse, I transplant Irene Adler from the '09 movie into present day, minus the romance (there's never enough Rachel McAdams!), and make Sebastian from the bank Moran (for the shallow reason that he and Moriarty would be hot together; also plot twists and stuff).

And holy shit this is long, so I'mma stop there and let you guys do the typing (it's a good cure for writer's block!). So! Got any headcanon you want to share?

Re: Headcanon! What's yours?

This is an excellent post. I'll try to respond when I have more time.

However I do think Sherlock knows when he's being hit on, you can see that 'Oh Shit!' look of wariness in his sideways glance at Molly's 'coffee?' and John's 'Single. Just like me.'

I find myself wondering at Sherlock's absolutely robotic expression and tone, 'This is my friend, John Watson' to Sebastian. If he was (and I think he was, too random an action otherwise) attempting to show off either his newly acquired romantic life or, my bet, "See! I have acquired social skills since uni!' he couldn't have picked a more lifeless, freaky way to convey the information.

I also firmly believe Mycroft loves and cares for his brother deeply. He's just too British and 'mansplain-ish' to convey it in a straightforward manner

I've poked a round a bit, but I have dial-up atm so major research isn't an option, so I thought I could ask here.

Is there a Reel Sherlock community? (The kind where you have once/twice a year fic fests, where everyone claims a movie from a list and then writes a fic based on the movie) If not, is there any interest for starting one? I love these to death, and given the number of movie prompts in the meme as well as the energy of the community, I think it would be so much fun.

Haven't heard of one yet, but check around the primary comms sherlockbbc and bbcsherlock for affiliates.

Is there any other fandom are you involved now?
Any recommendation? I really need something to watch while Sherlock is on hiatus! Something that has A LOT to dig up! (e.g, Startreck)

Have you tried book!Holmes and all the other incarnations of Holmes yet?
