This is a place for all sorts of off-topic discussion.

You can post anon or un-anon, per your personal preference, as usual.

All I ask is that you stay civil and (hopefully) friendly.

If you also want to use this thread to try to find a beta for a fic, or ask a brit-pick-ish question, I think that would be an acceptable use. Have fun!

Westwood

(Anonymous)
Moriarty is awfully protective of his suit. Any clothes lovers on here know about what it would cost?

Re: Westwood

(Anonymous)
Westwood isn't jaw-droppingly expensive if you're buying off the rack. A Westwood suit can run about £600 - £1000, and it's possible to find them on sale. You pay a lot more for a custom made Savile Row suit (£3000-£4000 for a traditionally tailored suit, possibly more if your tastes run to very exotic wools, etc, or about half that amount for one that eschews classic techniques for some time-saving measures), but Westwood has much more name cachet, especially for a character like Moriarty.

"It's bespoke" just doesn't have the same ring to it.

Is there a consensus for how old John is supposed to be? His CV, as shown in TBB, implies he is 27, which is around where ACD!canon Watson was when he met Holmes in STUD, but there is no way he looks that young.

There is also his 'official' blog, where he mentions going out with some old Blackheath rugby teammates, who haven't changed "Still downing pints like they're in the twenties." Which implies John is definitely NOT 27, but rather, at a minimum, 30, if not mid thirties (or even older).

I know Martin is 39, but an actor's age is never a good guide to how old the character is. It's not unheard of for someone to play a character 10 years younger (or older) then they actually are.

TL;DR How old is John?

Re: John's age?

(Anonymous)
Gatiss, I think it was, confirmed Sherlock's age. I can't remember the exact age, but it's definitely in the early 30s. 33 or 34, maybe. Watson is canonically a couple years older and nothing has suggested they've altered this, so John is in his mid/late 30s. The creators definitely don't conceive of him as guy in his late 20s. (Nor does Freeman come even close to passing for it!)

Why is it that anytime I start to feel competent or comfortable with something, I have this stupid urge to tear everything apart, withdraw from the world and self-destruct?

IDK. I feel like that sometimes too. Maybe it's the fear that, if I keep doing well, I will eventually screw up, disappointing myself and everybody else. Whereas screwing up as soon as I start to do well means less disappointment.

Yeah, I'm not sure, it's late.

Are men's nipples sensitive/responsive at all? I love this as a trope but it has never proved the case with my RL partners! I can suck, lick and nibble all I want, they merely wait patiently for me to move southward...

Depends on the guy. I had a partner who had sensitive nipples, he would encourage me to play with them. It's faaairly rare for a guy to be nipple sensitive, I think? But they exist more in fic because it's a fun trope.

I was wondering why slash is so appealing to women. I often say it's that some men like the idea of lesbians, so why wouldn't some women get off two guys getting it on?

But that's not really an explanation, either. Why do men like lesbians in the first place?

It's sexual psychology, really. Most men are attracted to women, and most women are attracted to men. If you're going to be watching/reading porn, you generally want to be watching porn featuring the sort of person you're attracted to. If you're attracted to women, two women will be more attractive to you than a woman and a man or two men.

Of course, there are people who are into porn/slash for other reasons, but to generalise a very broad subject, that's the best place to start.

Question: Would John use the term 'crocodile tears' to describe the kind of fake crying Sherlock does in TGG?

Because that's what they were?

Crocodile tears are fake tears that are used to hide predatory intent. Sherlock was on the hunt, and down they flowed. He wiped them away as soon as he'd gotten what he wanted.

So I recently decided to join the DW comm on lj. Its members are fairly active in posting things, but not so active on discussion and responding to posts. IDK it gave me a weird feeling that it's kinda deserted while not really being deserted. Has something been going on that's driving people away, (I mean the DW has always been known for its wank but from what I've seen in the past it doesn't stop people from participating) or am I just looking in the wrong place?

Have you discovered the DigitalSpy Dr Who page yet? There is always loads of speculation and episode dissection and it's very lively!

anon fic memes

(Anonymous)
Has anyone seen any anon multi-fandom or original fic memes out there? I found a few great pages, but alas they're not anon enabled and LJ search is getting very frustrating.

Re: anon fic memes

(Anonymous)
This one is just getting started. http://originalsinners.livejournal.com/ "Originalsinners is a kinkmeme for original characters and mostly original fiction - we do allow original characters in fandom settings, but please be sure they are original characters. If they have a name in canon, they don't count as original for the purposes of this kinkmeme."

I got bored enough to write a pairing that I don't ship, and am now unsure what to do with this thing. Obviously, I can post anon and be done with it, but I'm kind of odd about keeping all of my stuff in one place. Even if I'm not really into said stuff.

That is one thing I have come to enjoy about this place, though; I do find myself writing the sorts of things I'd never even consider on my own.

Has anyone else written something that you normally wouldn't? What did you do with it afterwards? Am I just being ridiculous about this whole thing? D:

I have the attention span of a concussed goldfish, so it's literally impossible for me to write a pairing I don't ship. I can never muster enough enthusiasm.

If you do post it anon - which you should do, because I'm sure loads of people want to read it! - just don't make a big deal about it not being your ship. I've seen some authors do that and it makes me feel judged.

Photobucket

This photograph, which is supposed to be IPhone wallpaper, freaks me out. I stare at it and feel, "AH! Freaky!"

Is it photoshopped? Too close so it shows the white make up? The weird way the eyes are lit? Or am I just a scaredy-baby?

Well, there's at least some kind of Photoshop filter used there - you can see the way the colours are blotched a bit, especially around the hair. That might cause the creepy shine in his eyes, but that might be touched up separately.

question for the young people (and Amercians)

(Anonymous)
Ok, back in the day when I was at school (ie the 90s) teachers wrote on black boards with chalk and used board rubbers.

I am right in thinking that these days it's white boards and white board markers and...board rubbers?

(Question for Americans - do you know what a board rubber is? I think this post has previously established that few people in the US use rubber to mean condom, but even fewer I imagine use it to mean eraser?)

Also, lab coats for A level chemistry practicals - are they used in English schools? If so cotton or disposable? How about gloves? I remember safety specs but am hazy about the other PPE.

Thanks!

Oh, you are stuck in the olden days, anon. Today we have interactive whiteboards and everything is multimedia.

Reichenbach Falls

(Anonymous)
If someone did to you what Sherlock Holmes did to John Watson, fake their death for three years, suddenly return, "SURPRISE!"...

Could you forgive them?

I'm not sure I could.

Re: Reichenbach Falls

I think it would depend on the person for me. And their reasons. I can hold a serious grudge over some of the smaller things. Something like that might make it nigh on impossible for me to get over.

Chinese

(Anonymous)
A few times now I've seen people who identify as Chinese, or being of Chinese descent, speak up and say they didn't find TBB racist. It makes me wonder.

People of Chinese descent, I want to know your feelings about TBB. Did you find it racially problematic? Did anything race-related bother you? Did you think something totally different?

No crusading white knights, please, or knights of any color other than Chinese. This is a question of how people of Chinese descent think/feel about TBB personally.

Re: Chinese

(Anonymous)
I'm Chinese. Lived in China for most of my teens before moving to the US. Before I read the reviews, I honestly didn't think it was racist at all. There are a lot of tropes that TV shows use when they decide to do an episode about Chinese people that elicit a "Ugh, here we go again" reaction from me, but funnily enough, TBB didn't hit those buttons for me.

I did find TBB to be the weakest and most meandering/boring episode though, so it's also possible that what would have usually annoyed me simply escaped my notice.

Maybe this is just me and my issues, but is it strange to anybody else that 221C is inside 221B? As far as I know it, houses are generally assigned letters when they're split into a few parts so as not to fuck up the numbering of the rest of the street - so 221A would be next door to 221B. Or it happens when a house has been turned into a set of flats, so then it'd just be 221 on the door and the the letters inside. But the fact that 221B is on the door and 221C is inside is just too much for me to handle, especially considering that the other rooms (S 'n' J's and Hudson's) don't appear to have separate numeral distinction.

They acknowledge that the numbering is odd in the commentary, but say that it simply didn't feel right to not have "221B" on the exterior door because it's so iconic. Really the door should say "221" and the units inside would be A, B, and C, but I have to agree with the writers on this one.
