This is a place for all sorts of off-topic discussion.

You can post anon or un-anon, per your personal preference, as usual.

All I ask is that you stay civil and (hopefully) friendly.

If you also want to use this thread to try to find a beta for a fic, or ask a brit-pick-ish question, I think that would be an acceptable use. Have fun!

Ziggy Stardust Prompt?

Long time ago, someone prompted for a Sherlock as Ziggy Stardust fic or art fill. I'd really like to fill this with a fic (though I won't be able to get to it for at least a couple of weeks as I'm a one project at a time person) but I can't find he original prompt. Does anyone know where it is on the meme?

This is the only one I could find: sherlockbbc-fic.livejournal.com/5950.html?thread=26516542

Brit-pickish question

(Anonymous)
Hello Chatter Post,

I've read that there are food carts scattered around Hyde Park, is that true? Did Google fail me? What kind of food can someone find there?

Also, can someone confirm if Google maps is correct? Walking from Baker Street to Lancaster Gate would take approximately 30 minutes by foot (40 minutes for someone with a psychosomatic limp?)

Then, walking from there to the Serpentine Bar & Kitchen would take another 20 minutes (more with limp).

Around 25 more minutes to reach Round Pond and another 10 minutes back to Lancaster gate, making the walk around the park over an hour (for limping John) + 3 minutes to get there. Does that sound about right? (I'm really trying to figure out if the whole journey could take around 2 hours if they stall a bit and stop for a bite.

I'm not anywhere near London, and this is barely related to what you're looking for, but here's an article on London street food. (Let's see if ditching the http part makes it not screen...)

Looking for a fic...

7 % solution

(Anonymous)
I've scoured the internet to no avail.

How would a 7 % solution of injected cocaine differ from snorting a line?

And what exactly is a 7 % solution? 7 % to water?

I'm bi-polar and ADHD. Adderall (IE, speed) calms me down. Opiates, oxycontin, vicodin, norcos, morphine opium make me languid and 'All's right w/the world, my jittery brain is slowing, ahhhh.' Like canon Holmes sprawled dreamily on the settee.

But he is languishing from injected coke.

The last time I did a line of coke, 17 years ago, my heart pounded, I sweat, anxiety attack "HOW DID I EVER THINK THIS WAS FUN BEFORE?" Granted it may have been cut w/something else, but, even w/ADHD which Holmes may have, cocaine made me anything but relaxed, languid and dreamy brained.

Was Dr. Doyle just pulling stuff out of his ass?

Re: 7 % solution

(Anonymous)
Canon Holmes used cocaine to stimulate his mind, not relax it.

From The Sign Of Four:

"I find it, however, so transcendently stimulating and clarifying to the mind that its secondary action is a matter of small moment [...] My mind rebels at stagnation. Give me problems, give me work, give me the most abstruse cryptogram, or the most intricate analysis, and I am in my own proper atmosphere. I can dispense then with artificial stimulants"

SHIT BITCHES SHOULD KNOW

a.k.a essential resources for the Sherlock fandom and this meme. Tells you how to do things like expand (unfold) all the comments on a page, track comments for free, add things to your memories/delicious account faster/easier, switch between accounts quickly, rename your tabs, open text links without copy and pasting them, see cliches and other errors in your writing, include pictures/gifs in anonymous posts, and much, much more.

This post may be useful on your list, as many people in this fandom have never even seen a gun in person, let alone know their intricacies.

Sherlock on The Big Screen

(Anonymous)
Does anyone think that Sherlock might become popular enough one day that the powers that be will see fit to make an actual theatrical release, like, movie movie out of it? Like The X-Files?

I'm kind of in love with that idea if it was done well (and I do think that it could be). Benedict and Martin and Rupert and a giant budget and special effects and chase scenes and fight sequences and MYCOFT AND ANTHEA GETTING OUT OF A HELICOPTER FOR SOME REASON (and a totally kick-ass script of course). If it was all... Britishy and smart and awesome? How amazing would that be?

NO, Michael Bay, you can't direct it! NO!

Re: Sherlock on The Big Screen

(Anonymous)
It would be excrutiatingly awful and embarrassing to watch, sadly. Have you ever seen any film made from a British TV show that wasn't? Some things just don't transfer well to other mediums.

Since this is off topic by nature, I'm going to ask here: is there a Doctor Who kink meme out there? Something like this Sherlock one? I can only find one, and it seems like it's dead. :\

I was looking for one yesterday, too, anon. I desperately want/need Eleven/River before Moffatt does his tricksy thing and kills the ship dead by making her his mother or Amy's child or something ridiculous and thus rendering all the eye-fucking and flirting squicky and unwatchable.

I was going to go anon for this, but fuck it. I'll take the abuse I'm sure to get for my ignorance.

I freely admit to having never put one of my fills on the filled prompt post, because I have no idea how this damn thing works.

WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS THING? How do I use it? It's thirty fucking pages long, and I'm expected to find the prompt I've just filled, from one of FOURTEEN posts amongst that? Am I missing something vitally important that no one has bothered outline, because I don't know how to find one prompt amongst thousands.

Have you tried flattening the page and searching it? That might help.

Bollocks. I have no idea why that pic isn't showing up. I used the table formatting and everything. I can see it now I'm replying to the comment. I bet it shows up now I've written this. Bugerbuggerbugger.

Yet another London question

(Anonymous)
Imagine Sherlock and Mycroft were to have lunch together, where would they go?

I'm thinking of an expensive restaurant with round tables, elegant atmosphere, period furniture and the like.

Any ideas?

Re: Yet another London question

(Anonymous)
The Criterion (http://criterionrestaurant.com/gallery.html), it has round tables, a period dining room and the Criterion Bar is where Watson met Stamford in A Study in Scarlet.

Colourblind casting in Frankenstein

(Anonymous)
For those of you who've seen Frankenstein, what did you think of the colourblind casting? Both lead actors are white, while Frankenstein's father is played by George Harris, who's black. Depending on which version, Frankenstein's younger brother is played by either a black child or a white child. It threw me for a bit of a spin so I'm wondering what others thought of it.

Re: Colourblind casting in Frankenstein

(Anonymous)
I probably would have accepted it if George Harris hadn't been so terrible.

Blinking?

(Anonymous)
There are reactions that confuse me when I've only ever read about them but never seen them. My current problem is with blinking when people are surprised. I know that people do the opposite, they stare. Or maybe raise an eyebrow. I can't remember seeing blinking in these situations and so I can't imagine it, it doesn't make sense to me. Can someone explain or link me to videos?

I plead guilty. It's a favorite trope of mine since, being short-sighted, I tend to blink in a number of situations - surprise included. In fact I tend to overdo it with my family - tilting my head back and giving a huge dramatic BLINK. It feels more natural than staring.

Now I think of it, it may also come from watching too many 1950es Hollywood movies. Methinks Katherine Hepburn did blink as much as she stared.

I just misread the word 'blue' as 'lube' (which made me notice they're anagrams of each other). Oh meme, what have you done to me? Haha.

Gives a whole new meaning to the phrase "blue film".

... Or then not.

Brit pick question r/t cervical smears

(Anonymous)
In the US when a woman gets a pap smear or a pelvic exam, she lies on a table and puts her feet into stirrups. I've read in Lancet and other medical publications that British doctors don't use stirrup tables (ie, they don't use the lithotomy position).

How do they do a smear? When you go to the doc for your cervical smear, what kind of table are you on, and where do you put your legs?

The padded tables in the US are waaaay too small and narrow to support feet on so i just have no idea how to imagine this.

Re: Brit pick question r/t cervical smears

(Anonymous)
It's just a regular examination table. You put your feet up near your bottom with the soles together and then spread your knees wide.

Fic recs

(Anonymous)
Hey all,

So I will be in the hospital for just over two weeks.

I was wondering what you feel is the best John!Whump fiction. Torture, mental angst, shooting, stabbing, sexual assault. You name it. Great dash of comfort from either sherlock or mycroft.

I'm going to be bed bound for a week at least and need my fic!(spinal surgery which will hopefully help chronic pain and sudden inability to walk at points)

Thank you.

Re: Fic recs

(Anonymous)
Hmm. I really thought I'd saved more fic like that, but the only ones I have are:

Reaction (blind-author.livejournal.com/636.html) by blind_author [Moriarty rapes John during TGG]

and

Oneirology (fanfiction.net/s/6393862/1/Oneirology) by luthier [John wakes up with amnesia].

I hope your surgery goes well, anon. ♥
