This is a place for all sorts of off-topic discussion.

You can post anon or un-anon, per your personal preference, as usual.

All I ask is that you stay civil and (hopefully) friendly.

If you also want to use this thread to try to find a beta for a fic, or ask a brit-pick-ish question, I think that would be an acceptable use. Have fun!

So, I'm not sure if this is kosher, but I figure it might be of some use/interest to folks on this meme, since asexuality is such a widely-discussed topic round here.

But I've got a sex-positive asexual sex blog going, where I basically occasionally bang on about my experiences with being in a long term, committed, open, and admittedly a bit weird relationship with someone who is very much sexual. It started off when a friend began having her own crisis of sexual identity, and had asked me to talk more about the subject on my blog, since she didn't know where else to go, but I've recently moved it to a dedicated account.

If anyone ever has any questions on the matter, I would be more than glad to answer them. My perspective is not everyone's perspective, but hopefully it can still prove helpful to someone. :D

NHS question

(Anonymous)
Would someone who needed ongoing, out patient treatment for a serious mental illness (here schizophrenia) typically see their psychiatrist at a surgery (clinic my parlance, like where John works), a hospital, psych-specific treatment center of some sort, or...?

Re: NHS question

(Anonymous)
It depends entirely on the Local Health Authority, how the treatment was sourced and the mental state of the person concerned.

Treatment could take place in a hospital, at the psychologists practice, in a regional Poly-clinic or even in the patient's home. The one place it would be most unlikely to happen is the Surgery, as this is for general diagnostic and treatment issues specialist mental health issues. However the patient would also see a doctor at his or her local surgery fairly regularly if drugs needed to be presecibed.

reading WIPs

(Anonymous)
When I see that a fill is a WIP I wait and only read it when it's finished. I'm wondering if that's a good idea or not. Good thing is I can read it in one go, there's no waiting and forgetting between chapters and no catching up and getting back in the mood for the story.
But what if it's counterproductive? Should I read what's already been posted and comment? I imagine that's encouraging for the author. Writers, can lack of comments make you stop writing a WIP?

This is a pretty subjective answer but here we go.

I can only post long fills in English as WIP for the time being. If I try to wait until I've done it all, perfectionism and insatisfaction set in and I give up before the end. So knowing there are people who like the fill and are waiting for an update is a powerful incentive to keep up the work. I Iove the prompt I'm working on but right now I'm writing at a snail's pace because RL is a bit harrowing, and the main reason I'm still going at it every day is this adorable anon who is tracking the fill and commenting on each part in a manner that really fuels my writing energy.

If there was no comment at all, I'd probably give up, yes, because I'd feel that what I wrote was not sufficiently, well, efficient to raise a response. I don't mind having few comments - it only takes one testimony of pleasure that I can feel is sincere for me to continue. But it does make a difference, so when I stumble on a WIP that I enjoy I try to comment on the spot too.

(Long subjective answer is long, sorry!^^)

SQUINT

(Anonymous)
What do you think of "Squint" being used as a genre of fiction?

I kinda like it. It's useful. It leaves it up to the reader whether or not to interpret the story in a pre-slash way or a purely gen way. Both slasher's and gen-ficcers can enjoy it.

If you were Moriarty, what painting would you steal for the LULZ? Initially, I thought Mona Lisa, but he's not quite so BORING. Maybe Michelangelo's David for creepy reasons? IDK.

Why be predictable and steal one painting? How about stealing a whole museum. Or replace all paintings in one with copies...

An or A?

(Anonymous)
When you have an acronym or initialism, where the first letter is pronounced with a vowel at the beginning, but the letter itself is a consonant, is it correct to say "an" or "a", with the acronym / initialism?

For example, as I'm sure I've explained myself terribly, would someone drive "a SUV" or "an SUV"?

Indeed Mycroft, I am asking my rsoces network.

Cripes now I'm not sure lol. I was going to say "an" but now that I'm saying it aloud (yes, sitting at my desk, going "an suv or a suv?" over and over, lol), I'm not sure if that's correct or if it's my dialect/accent.

Hey gals and dudes and everyone else,

Please direct me towards your favourite unfilled porn prompts (preferably S/J because it is the most popular), so I can write something incredibly filthy and get my groove back.

Imma just leave this here... *cough*

transit query

(Anonymous)
How do Oyster cards work? I've seen something in fic that implies they can be used for cabs???

Re: transit query

(Anonymous)
Nah, you can't use them for cabs. There are yellow swipe circle things: http://www.bitterwallet.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/oyster-swipe.jpg that look like that :) They're on the underground barriers, and you have to tap your oyster card on them to get into the underground and tap to get off. It's £1.40 to travel with an oyster card on the underground. They're also on London buses, but you only have to do it to get on. It's £1.30 for a bus.

Sorry if you didn't want a whole load of info haha.

"You've got your Russian politics in my Fanfiction!"

(Anonymous)
Is the DDOS attacks still going on? Or is it just for me that LJ is not giving me notices, losing hundreds of comments, swallowing up the comments I make.

Re: "You've got your Russian politics in my Fanfiction!"

I haven't noticed issues with comments lately.

Crime

(Anonymous)
Hello, lovely anons and not-so-anons.

What are some particularly nasty parts of London? The unsavory types of places that would make even people like Sherlock, John, and Lestrade nervous?

Re: Crime

(Anonymous)
Peckham isn't great, known for its gang violence. That being said, I have a friend who works there and she says it's not all as bad as its reputation though she wouldn't go there at night.

Peckham is South London. There's an urban myth/joke that London black cabs (and indeed some Londoners) won't go 'South of the River' (Thames). It's not true but it is more difficult to get a black cab in south London and there is a perception that South London is inferior to North London.

(Baker Street is very much North of the River.)

Similar to a post on the previous page:

Link me to some of your (preferably gen or sort-of-gen) unfilled prompts so that I may also get my grove back. I'm particularly skilled at complete and utter nonsense and slice of life sort of things.

Mycroft, what the FUCK?

Mycroft wants you to do Elvish calculus. (He wants me to buy toilet paper.)

Is there a proper protocol...

For filling your own old, unfilled prompt? A few months ago I prompted something b/c I couldn't think of a story past the idea stage but today a story came to me lol.

Re: Is there a proper protocol...

I've seen other people do it. I think you just fill it like you would normally.

Easter is looming... do you think we could have an Easter feast of sort? Or if Easter sounds too religious, a Spring festival? Like, Idk, a special post where people points out the prompts they'd really like to see filled (ideally, other prompts than their own)? And try to fill one prompt themselves, during a fortnight or so?

*feels vaguely influenced by her Mum's Easter orgy of let's-give-everyone-painted-boiled-eggs and more than anything else would like to get her groove back, too.* *sighs*
