This is a place for all sorts of off-topic discussion.

You can post anon or un-anon, per your personal preference, as usual.

All I ask is that you stay civil and (hopefully) friendly.

If you also want to use this thread to try to find a beta for a fic, or ask a brit-pick-ish question, I think that would be an acceptable use. Have fun!

Hmm. Quick question for the brits out there: what's a 'skip'? Is it like an alley? If so, do you use the terms interchangeably, or when I see 'alley' in a fic, is that an americanism that slipped in?

(If you don't know what an alley is, its that dingy little space between two buildings that most often houses dumpsters and homeless people, and generally smells of damp, rotting mysteries.)

I did research on this. It's a dumpster.

So, fess up, fillers.

(Anonymous)
Your elephants' graveyard for fics. You know, those spur-of-the-moment ideas that seemed brilliant when you first sat down to type them and which eventually, inevitably, withered by the 2000 word mark. You still like the idea but can't seem to make it work. In some cases you then resort to the meme and infect someone else with it, and sometimes you get fills that are way better than anything you could ever have come up with yourself, and sometimes they just get forgotten and you feel guilty for never taking the idea further.

My "dead word count" for this fandom still remains under 2000 because I'm relatively new to the series, but for some of my older fandoms... well, I could probably pull a NaNo using only the fics I never finished. What's buried in your hard drives, anon or not-so-anon fillers?

Re: So, fess up, fillers.

(Anonymous)
My biggest shame was a pure emotional piece where Sherlock was furious with John. I couldn't get a handle on the motivation, setting, dialogue. :(

Help?

(Anonymous)
Allo! I've got a question for those living in London. I'm writing a fic that requires food being bought in McDonald's. Can anyone give me the price of a Toffee Sundae, McFlurry and two orders of large fries?

Thank you! :)

Re: Help?

(Anonymous)
Because MacDonalds is a franchise in the UK prices vary between branches. You'd need a specific branch if you wanted to be accurate.

How long does it take for you to finish a fic/art on the average?

(Anonymous)
I'm really really really lazy. I think.
I takes even a month. Or two months to finish my art. At some point it becomes boring. It's really hard to keep myself motivated to the end for some reason.. That's why I have plenty of WIPs on my computer.

Re: How long does it take for you to finish a fic/art on the average?

It really depends on the circumstances for me.

Sometimes, I see a prompt, sit down and three hours later I have 5000 words of porn. Go to the kitchen, drink some coffee, come back, proof-read, post, done.

With the longer stories, I'm usually quite quick with the first few chapters, then the initial fire is gone and while it isn't a chore exactly (I love writing too much for that), it has lost the this is new and awesome spark. I still like the story a great deal and am looking forward to writing certain parts especially, but it's more of a "Today, I'm going to work on this." thing, not a "OMG WRITING FIT!!!11elevenone" like in the beginning.

Sometimes, some things just don't work out and die after whatever time has passed.

And sometimes, certain fics are just so much fun but also so much work that I'm just too lazy to make myself work on them and they sit around for weeks and months and all I ever manage to do is write something like "Blah I'm bored." or "Y U NO WRITE URSELF" under the actual writing...

Motivation, where art thou?

Sometimes, adding my boring opinions onto every single thread on the meme posts seems so much more productive than writing my WIPs...

Do you know that feeling when you want to write but you're just kind of blandly staring at the screen and just don't feel like it. Not an inspiration problem but a motivation problem?

Ladida, even posting this stupid discussion seems better than making John and Sherlock argue with each other right now.

Re: Motivation, where art thou?

As not!Anthea might say - Oh yeah. Right here and now.

Know where I'm headed to, know what I want them to do, and all I've done this week was type and erase my first paragraph forty-one times running.

Poor Mrs Hudson is nursing her godawful clerical joke backstage waiting for take 42.

Courage!

Oh dear, sorry, I seem to be stalking you in this post today...

Stop beating ourselves up

I wonder if the recent motivation drought is because we're so far removed from the airing of the original material. I think May 30 and on will be a much better time around here.

Re: Stop beating ourselves up

I tend to agree. That and a lot of people here seem to be in school or have kids in school so hitting that home stretch before summer is sucking a lot of time I think.

Anyone care to explain to a newbie some of the abbreviations that pop up in the comments around here? SA? DA? NYART? Any others I'm missing?

DA= different anon

SA= same anon

AYRT= anon you replied to

NAYRT= not anon you replied to

OP= original poster

British equivalent...

...to "Lifetime" movies? Those really schlocky, usually quickly-made, pandering to the idea of what women like, movies on the Lifetime channel?

Re: British equivalent...

(Anonymous)
That's sort of judgmental. I found "A Dog Took My Face And Gave Me A Better Face To Change The World: The Celeste Cunningham Story" to be a truly moving and masterful piece of made-for-TV cinema.

Seeing that Moddie Dearest and her co-mod aren't willing to step down, I actually want to start a new comm. If I had the chance to choose though, I wish they would just step down and we all wouldn't have to make all these extra communities. Because hey, no one wants to be spammed of the same fic/art/vid post 29836274 times because you follow all of them, right?

I know that there's already 10+ BBC Sherlock communities out there, and I can't say mine will be any different. Other than, well, I would want to make the place as amazing as I possibly can (with the help of all you fantastic people, of course), because I've been wanting fandom utopia (or what could be considered the closest to it) for years. I avidly love, love, LOVE the show and for once in my life, I no longer want to be an anon lurking in the shadows. I simply love this show too much. Fandom doesn't work with tyranny (too often have we witnessed a great fandom go down in flames because of it). I don't believe in being ~holier than thou~ just because I have "moderator" under my screen name.

Would you guys like to give me a chance and put faith in me? I'm not going to create it if you guys think it's unnecessary.

The trouble is that Moddie Dearest &co aren't egregiously awful enough to cause most people to want to leave the comm. They're usually pretty low-key, they admittedly do a good job of keeping the comm free of spam, and if they've noticed all the anonymous venom being directed at them lately, they're at least keeping quiet about it and not letting it prevent them from doing their jobs as mods.

This isn't to say that I like their policies or way they run things, quite the contrary, but I'm not optimistic about anyone's chances of getting many folks to jump ship to a new comm at this point - not when general interest seems to be running a bit cooler lately anyway. Maybe things will be different closer to the release of new episodes? I do feel your pain and wish you luck, anon, it's sad to see people who don't love the fandom wielding such power over it.

Football question

(Anonymous)
Hello lovely people, I need a little help for a fic.

What would be a decent football team for Lestrade to support, and what would you say about this team in an argument about why it's better than another? I don't even need a lot of details really, just a team name and something you could say about them that makes them sound good.

Thank you for any help you can give!

Grammer question

(Anonymous)
"If this were his mother" or "If this was his mother" ?

Re: Grammer question

(Anonymous)
"were" is correct. It's a conditional or counterfactual statement so it takes the subjunctive tense.

Britpick question

(Anonymous)
At weddings, do you Brits tap glasses (usually with utensils) to get the bride and groom to kiss?

Re: Britpick question

(Anonymous)
No. We tap a glass to get people to listen.

Anyone here familiar with the Canadian school system in the later part of the 19th century?

Because if someone is, I would like to pick his/her brain.

I was wondering if anyone would be able to lend me a hand, and join in my search efforts -

A few parts ago (no earlier than Part 9, likely to be 10 onwards) there was a prompt about John becoming an awesome baker and making mind fondants and feeding Sherlock up.

I'd love to write a fill for it, only I can't find it. I've been doing my best to search, but if anyone knows what part it was on or has a link I would be eternally grateful.

I really hope it's this one! http://sherlockbbc-fic.livejournal.com/5950.html?thread=24207166#t24207166

I think you are totally fine. She said she was okay with dark, she left it up to you what to write, and she apparently is okay with very dark. I can't see why she would have an objection.

However, you seem to be rather unnerved by how dark you've gone. Are you looking for a reason why you should abandon this fic in favor of starting over again?

If so, I'd ask you to look into yourself and decide if you honestly can finish this fic. If it's gone so dark that you dread writing it, it's better to scrap it and go with the other idea. A late fic is better than a never completed one. Your other fic won't get written any sooner if you are dragging your heels over this one.
