This is a place for all sorts of off-topic discussion.

You can post anon or un-anon, per your personal preference, as usual.

All I ask is that you stay civil and (hopefully) friendly.

If you also want to use this thread to try to find a beta for a fic, or ask a brit-pick-ish question, I think that would be an acceptable use. Have fun!

OT: Dating when you don't trust people to touch you...

So... I have a question for ppl: How do you date when you're not into sex? I'm not asexual but my past sexual exprience has been of the traumatizing sort. Frankly, as far as I'm concerned, sex is off the table until it becomes someting I have to deal with - hell, a lot of the time, touching makes me uncomfortable never mind kissing or - you get the idea. Basically, I'm a twentysomething urbanite and my aversion to physical contact makes even 1st dates not-ok a lot of the time. (For the record, when i'm certain that the touching isn't/won't be sexual or potentially sexual in nature I'm very tactile.) My friends tend to just tell me to suck it up and get over it. It doesn't work like that... thoughts?

Re: OT: Dating when you don't trust people to touch you...

You might not be asexual, but have you considered dating one? Or a demisexual, at least someone who wouldn't put any pressure on you and would be relieved not to have pressure put on them. They're hard to find, I know, but it might be worth thinking about.

warning for the TMI

Sometimes I just want to talk about my love/sex life, but I have nobody to chat to...

I love jacking my boyfriend off, because he whimpers and squeaks so cutely, and holds me tight. When he gets close to orgasm he gets all desperate and starts trying to touch and kiss me, but I don't let him (can't let myself get distracted!). When he cums he grabs my hands, like he wants to push me away since he doesn't like me getting his semen on me, and afterwards he gets all embarrassed.

Sometimes I feel like I'm bullying him, but I enjoy it... He says he likes being overpowered by me though, which is good! I really love him *gushy lovehearts mode*

Re: warning for the TMI

I bet he'd love being tied up. Then you can tease him and force him to hold on longer than he'd normally be able to hold himself. You'd get to enjoy his wiggles and whines.

Driving myself crazy...

...trying to find a YouTube clip. I'm convinced I watched a clip of an interview with Benedict where he talks about having just read a book about a serial killer written by the serial killer's brother. I've been searching but can't seem to find it. Anyone know the clip I'm talking about? I want to read the book but never caught which one it was...

Re: Driving myself crazy...

I don't know the book, but it's possible he was speaking about Shot in the Heart by Mikal Gilmore, whose brother Gary Gilmore was executed for murder in 1977. Mikal's book has won prizes and awards. It's been over a decade since I read it, but I remember that it was beautifully written.

How screwed would I be if 'teh' were a word.

Is there any difference between

"Blablabla," said Sherlock.

"Blablabla," Sherlock said.

Does one sound more natural or more common or anything at all? :)

Re: Quick Question :)

I think 'Sherlock said' is supposed to be more modern and immediate than 'said Sherlock'. It might just be me, but I hear the narrator's voice more when reading 'said Sherlock' which is good for some types of fics but not others.

Should I tip the cleaners?

Lovely memers, I have an etiquette question for you.

So, I'm having a cleaning service clean my old apartment before I finish moving (no time whatsoever to do it myself, oh well) and I'm curious as to what you guys think...should I tip her when she's finished? If so, any ideas how much?

Thanks guys! =D

Re: Should I tip the cleaners?

Hell yeah, do unto other and all that. Cleaning an apartment, especially after a move, is grueling, dirty work, and a good chunk of the fee is probably going to the service provider and not the worker. When in doubt, I just go with 15 - 20%

I actually finished a damn WIP. Hopefully it was even a satisfying ending (tho I dunno about that). Anyway, day-um, but that frees me up to start thinking a bit more about filling other prompts.

Re: Whoo hoo

Hopefully it was even a satisfying ending

I'm working on a fill for a prompt that is highly anticipated, but it's non-con to the max with buckets and buckets of angst and I just don't know how detailed to be or if I should just jump in and write the thing all willy-nilly (but I know if I did that it would seem very bare bones and I want this thing to make people feel feelings, you know?).

I just don't know what I'm getting myself into and I feel like I should abandon it now and forget I even thought about it (it's not like anyone knows I'm working on it, afterall). =/

Write what you feel comfortable doing. I've done non-con every which way til sunday, from brutal and angsty and highly detailed to sketchy and implied, to even funny, which is about as wrong as you can get. There's an audience for all of it.

Brit-pick Question - Cars!

What type of car might be appropriate for security detail secret service types in the UK? In the US, it would be something in a large, black SUV.

Re: Brit-pick Question - Cars!

Very few people would have that type of security. But the few that do tend to have high powered BMW or Mercedes saloons. You couldn't move quickly on British streets with an SUV.

Would it be jarring if I referred to the cabbie as Jefferson Hope? It looks weird to me but he's not a cabbie in my story....:\

I don't think it would be jarring. It's his name, right? Although I wouldn't have remembered it off the top of my head, so as long as there's a mention of him being the cabbie somewhere in the header (under characters or author's notes) I would think it's fine.

Head canon?

I feel a bit stupid for asking this, but what exactly is head canon? Is it something you're convinced is canon or something you'd like to be canon?

Example: I'm convinced that Sherlock is asexual, because that's what I got from the somewhat vague scene in Study in Pink. I think it is, because I'd like it to be, lack of interest and that he hasn't tried it out ever, because we need to represent, damn it! And I think, because it just makes sense to me, that he's aromantic.

Is this head canon or are there other things in my example?

Re: Head canon?

I'd define head canon as something you personally hold true about a character and that isn't totally contradicted by actual canon. So yes, that would be your head canon.

(My head canon is that Sherlock is not asexual, he just ignores his sex drive like he does hunger, sleepiness, etc. Mycroft, however, is asexual and aromantic.)

I've finished a second fill to a recent prompt, which is currently being filled as a WIP. If I post it will it mess with this person's formatting?

Not if s/he's nested the fill comments (which basically everyone does.)

Sometimes, out of no where, it just kind of hits you. I was thinking I've been on this meme forever. Then I looked back at the dates and realized it's only been 6 months.

This is the most prolific meme I've ever seen. It's so massive, it warps time.

Tell me about it. I've been here since October and sometimes it feels like I've been here longer than I've been in any other fandom ever. ...And I've been in some of my fandoms for a decade.

I'm in shock. I just checked my drawing on a different screen and it looks even more crude than on my computer screen. ;_; ........

This always happens when I make graphics. So frustrating. I sympathise ;_;

Fic endings, how do you do them?

What do you do if you don't know how to end your fic? Not because you don't know when or where to end it but because the fic deals with a certain problem and you don't know a solution to that problem that isn't either OOC, unrealistic or horribly cliche?

Do you send it to your beta and ask their opinion? Do you shelf it for a while and work on something else? Do you write the "bad" ending anyway? WHAT DO YOU DO? And why does this happen to me all the time? ;-;

Re: Fic endings, how do you do them?

Asking your beta is a good option, also letting it rest for a while and seeing if you get some new inspiration for it. If you think yourself it is a "bad" ending then you probably shouldn't write it, because that just might make you feel uncomfortable, but then again you can write it and maybe it isn't bad at all, you just think it is, but your readers might totally disagree? Also one thing I sometimes do if I have no idea how to end it, is leaving the solution out. Just end it where it is and let the readers have their own opinion on how it continues. Sometimes leaving something open for interpretation and imagination is the way to go :). And don't worry, you are not alone *hugs*
