This is a place for all sorts of off-topic discussion.

You can post anon or un-anon, per your personal preference, as usual.

All I ask is that you stay civil and (hopefully) friendly.

If you also want to use this thread to try to find a beta for a fic, or ask a brit-pick-ish question, I think that would be an acceptable use. Have fun!

For Crack: Information

(Anonymous)
but which kiiind?

No, seriously though. The clinic John Watson works at.

1) Is that a free universal-health-care clinic? I've only been in Canada, I don't know if its different.

therefore

2) Do you need to make appointments in advance or is it come as you will, hope there's room?

Re: For Crack: Information

(Anonymous)
John works at a GPs surgery. GP = General Practitioner.
Yes, it's free. We have the NHS over here and free healthcare is universal.

And yes, you'd need to make appointments.
Some do offer some kind of drop in service. My GPs have a session in the afternoons where you phone them in the morning and they add you to the list and then it's random which doctor you see and exactly when (for example I was 'booked in' for 3 at this session the other day and so were many many oher people. There were about four doctors doing the session and I was finally called in about half three). But then my previous GP didn't offer that service at all and would instead try to squeeze you in between other patients if their receptionists could be convinced it was an emergency. Things vary.

Does anyone else....

(Anonymous)
Really not like John? I don't know why but he just... sketches me out. In the first act, with the exception of Sally, he doesn't have a single interaction with a woman that doesn't set my teeth on edge. I write from his POV a lot because I can't get into Sherlock's head (not smart enough) but I don't actually like him...

Re: Does anyone else....

(Anonymous)
You are not alone~

I think I just get tired of what appears to be the "John can do no wrong" feeling in the fandom.

I am curious, though, what was wrong with his interaction with Molly?

Dear God, I hope no one ever checks my Google history.

I search up things like, "suicide methods", "how to kill people", "effects of so-and-so poison" and the such. Not because I am suicidal/murderous.

It's research for Sherlock!fic. XD

BRAND SPANKING NEWBIE

(Anonymous)
Hola. So, I just watched Sherlock yesterday. All three episodes/movieish thingies.

IN LOVE.

Anyway, I'm not really a fic person, I mean, okay, that's a lie, but I'm more of an art person.

Any good recs? For Mycroft in particular? I'm basically obsessed with Mark Gatiss right now, he's the reason I actually watched Sherlock.

Is there any adult art in the fandom?

I'm planning an epic, multi-community art/fic trawl this weekend, get my perv on and whatnot, but I was wondering if you guys had any favorites? Like artist or particular art or whatever?

Re: BRAND SPANKING NEWBIE

(Anonymous)
I'm quite fussy about Mycroft art and think Mark Gatiss must be very difficult to draw! But definitely check bigbadporkchop's journal - they draw fantastic and frequently porny Mycroft-based art.

Where have all the beta writers gone? Anyone willing to help a crackfic/darkfic/crossover-obsessed asexual gal out?

*poses alluringly for the masses*

Oh, go on then, if you can send it right now. If that helps.

Favorite vacation spots?

So, lovely memers, I'm curious...where're your favorite vacation spots?

Personally, I loved the French Riviera, Venice, Florence, Rome, and Paris. (sensing a theme here?)

More locally, though, strange as this sounds, I love going to Utah and Vermont. (and if anyone I know sees this, I'll deny it to my last breath!)

(Deleted comment)
Would a teenager in the UK say that someone was "jumped" when they got mugged like they do here in the US?

Well, I'm not a teenager but for me that has connotations of 'jump your bones' ie have sex with.

Perhaps because of that I'd read it as a sexual assault rather than a mugging.

Okay, odd question... do any of y'all believe in ghosts? Other supernatural stuff? Aannnnnnnnnnnnnnnnd if so...where are you from, geographically? (LOL my inner anthropologist is wondering if there is a skew in beliefs based on national origin). I was writing a bit of fic and there's a ghosty bit involved which got me thinking.

I'll be up front and admit to believing. I'm well educated (I think I am anyway. BA, MA, and a lot of certificates, lol) and that seems to be a "thing" when people discuss ghosts, etc, whether or not someone is educated. I know it's a cultural thing in my family (Southern and East Texan, a lot of us practice hoodoo as well so...that might be a factor).

Re: Ghostworld

(Anonymous)
I believe in absolutely nothing supernatural - not ghosts, not gods, not spirits, not angels, not ESP, etc, etc.

I'm from California, have an advanced degree, and come from a liberal Christian family. I became an atheist at age 11, but I can't remember ever believing in ghost or the like.

Friendships

(Anonymous)
I don't know if I'm just an utter social failure, but I'm finding it harder and harder to make new friends as I get out of school. I used to have lots of people to talk on the phone with and socialize with in high school, ditto for undergrad. But now that I'm in grad school and living off-campus, it seems that without the 'forced' socialization environment, I'm having a lot of trouble making connections. I get along well enough with my colleagues, but no one I really chat with or hang out with outside of work. I went to a few events here and there but it's always awkward because I don't know anyone there, and everyone else has their own group of friends already.

I'm feeling a bit lonely and lost. Does anyone have any advice?

Re: Friendships

(Anonymous)
Only that like this is really common - probably one of the key challenges for college graduates is dealing with the isolation which can occur in adult life.

The standard advice is join clubs! Meet people with similar interests! But it's also important to realise there isn't anything wrong with feeling this way. It's a life stage. I think most people muddle through.

this IS the off topic forum right?........

(Anonymous)
So, i feel guilty asking about this, but does anyone know of the book Hush Hush by becca fitzpatrick?

I think that it was an absolutely terrible book, but i like the idea of fallen angels a whole lot.

soooooo does anyone know if there's any good fics or communities? i can't find any.....

Help me Sherlock Kinkmeme, You're my only hope.

Orphans?

(Anonymous)
Can anybody explain to me why John and Sherlock are constantly portrait as orphans?

They are about my age and I know very few people that have lost both parents at my age. So why has it become fanon that both Sherlock's and John's parents are death? And why is it never commented on in those stories. Because I would notice it.

Re: Orphans?

(Anonymous)
I think because in the original ACD canon there is no mention AFAIK of John or Sherlock having any family members other than both having brothers.

This plus Holmes and Watson typically - over the last 100 years - have been potrayed as older than in this adaption: in their 40s and 50s. So there's 100 years of fanon where the lack of parents isn't that striking.

RPF fic memes - anything with Rupert or Mark?

(Anonymous)
So I'm dipping a cautious toe in the RPF fic post. And what I find is fine - well-written, respectful fantasizing rather than wolfish cannibalism - and bothers me much less than I feared it would.

But it's mostly about Benedict and Martin and while I love these two I'd be curious to read some fills with Rupert or Mark. Can anyone direct me to fills or comms? Can't promise my first-born, but a load of thank-you unicorns and whatnots.

(Oh god, Mycroft's saying Turner. Wonder if that pairing has been prompted before?)

Do you have any addiction?

(Anonymous)
You know there are all sorts of addiction out there.
I think I might be addicted to Coke. And sugar. I can't work without Coke. I drink it all the time like water. Actually sometimes I don't drink water at all. And of course there is Sherlock. I keep thinking about It all day long. I actually don't watch TV at all. I don't even watch films at all. Last year I watched not a single film. And yet, here I am! I can't live without this show. Every time I think about it, my mood instantly lights up.
Anyway I think I need to go out to buy some Coke right now. :/ Too thirsty.

Re: Do you have any addiction?

(Anonymous)
I wouldn't call it an addiction because it's not any one thing but I do become obsessed over things. For example, when I first got my Sherlock DVDs, I would play them over and over and over when I was home. Even if I wasn't watching it, it would be on in the background and everything Sherlock was all I was interested in in my free time.

Then it played itself out and I was on to the next thing.

Not sure if it's "normal" or something I should be worried about...

Mycroft says I've got a fever!

Looking for a prompt

(Anonymous)
There's a prompt that I've started filling, but I can't find it anymore! I could have sworn it was somewhere on the last few pages, but I've went all the way back to page 16 without seeing it. CTRL+F on the filled prompts post isn't doing anything either so idk maybe someone here has it bookmarked?

It's basically about there being a porn movie about Sherlock and John, and John watches it to see what the fuss is all about. And finds it to be a surprisingly endearing love story. (loosely paraphrased)

Anyone have a link to it or did I just hallucinate this entire thing?

Re: Looking for a prompt

You didn't hallucinate it -- I don't have a link, but I remember it too. I think it was one where John's blog gets really popular and the make the 09 movie based on it, and then the porn parody comes out.

I lost a fic :<

(Anonymous)
I remember a fic (I think it was from a fairly early part but I could be wrong) and it was modeled after some Youtube video that I think was called something like "Kittens talking about kittens". It had Sherlock looking at a crime book with a bunch of pictures in it and narrating it. I remember that one of the pictures had a guy in a santa hat.
