This is a place for all sorts of off-topic discussion.

You can post anon or un-anon, per your personal preference, as usual.

All I ask is that you stay civil and (hopefully) friendly.

If you also want to use this thread to try to find a beta for a fic, or ask a brit-pick-ish question, I think that would be an acceptable use. Have fun!

Very silly (possibly) question regarding camping and comfort foods in Britain

'Smores... yes or no? Same with the fine traditional scorched marshmallows on sticks while camping?

And please tell me no one actually ingests Bovril... Marmite and Vegemite I can get behind (seriously) but not Bovril...

Re: Very silly (possibly) question regarding camping and comfort foods in Britain

(Anonymous)
From personal experience, it's really damn hard to by graham crackers outside the US. So I'm guessing no to smores. Also, I don't think British people really do camping the same way it's done in the US - there's a lot less land to play great outdoors in unless you're in the country? Aussie camping things did do marshmallows-on-sticks though, so I'm not sure.

Anyone but me notice that the odd Parts seem to fill up faster than the even parts? 1,3,5, are filled, 9 and 11 are almost filled, and none of the even parts are even close.

Weird.

Re: Curse of the evenes?

(Anonymous)
Strange but true.

Oddly, I seem to prefer the even parts - my list of prompts to fill are all from 8, 10 and 12.

Favorite guilty pleasure food?

(Anonymous)
I'm so bored.

What's your favorite guilty pleasure food?

Mine is a fucking hot dog. I love hot dogs. Omg. I don't care what goes into them--a perfectly barbecued hot dog on a fresh bun with relish, mustard, and ketchup is the best thing ever. And it has to have the indent lines from the grill on it too.
And some fucking potato chips, or crisps or whatever the hell you wanna call them. And a sugary as fuck coca cola.
obvious American is obvious. let's throw some fireworks in there too, and maybe a few guns. And some apple goddamn pie.
Don't like hot dogs? GET OFF MY LAND, FUCKING PINKO COMMIE.

Re: Favorite guilty pleasure food?

Oh god I love hot dogs but I eat veggie dogs since giving up meat years ago. I miss chicken and dumplings though... I know I can make fake ones but still... *sigh*

My guilty pleasure foods: Salt and vinegar chips (crisps but I'm in the states so...chips lol), nachos, lemon ice box pie, and *sigh* I'll admit this: a spoon of condensed milk. Just that, not in anything. Just the condensed milk on a spoon.

And not all of those foods together... that'd be unfun. Oh and really spicy Israeli hot sauce.

Silly question is silly

(Anonymous)
... So. Am I the only one who's - ever so slightly - turned on when Lestrade says "Oi" in fanon?

Re: Silly question is silly

(Anonymous)
*raises hand shyly* I'm trying to think if I've ever made him say that! Oh, surely I have.

I hate when couples split. Especially long term couples. Even celebrity long term couples.

It's like mom and dad splitting up all over again.

I'm so bored. I think I need a gun and a smiley or paint cans so I can draw it on my wall. But I won't smear it on Edward.

Post it with appropriate warnings. They can read it, or not? Either way other people will get to enjoy it.

Hello dear meme inhabitants. I feel rather a prat having to ask this, but as a relative newbie, I need your help. How do you go about trying to find fics? Fandoms all seem so huge, even this one which isn't even a year old yet, and I have no idea where or how to start looking. I'm either doing LJ search wrong or it's useless, and Google is even worse. I don't want to be an annoying person who prompts something that there are already a million fics of, outside the meme, and aside from being annoying, I wanna read stuff that interests me! I just can't work out how to find it.

I still haven't figured out how to make the LJ search do what I want it to do. :)

I find fic a few ways (though I only really spend time on this meme):

- If someone is signed in when they fill a prompt, generally they have other fic, too.

- There are a few comments on this post asking for recs, which is also a good way to find them.

- fanfiction.net has a fairly large number of fics that I haven't found in other places, and quite a few of the authors there have links to their LJs too.

- Fairly often prompts for here get links to fic that fill the prompt in some way, so you can find stuff that way, too.

- I also find that by following as many links as possible leads to some really wonderful discoveries.

I hope that's at least slightly helpful!

Migraines

(Anonymous)
So I finally got around to looking up migraines (using Google-fu) and it seems that I actually do get them. I always thought they were just really bad headaches, but it seems not.

The only thing is... these things that are "symptoms" are things that I thought were just me not taking care of myself or something. Like sleepiness - just didn't go to bed early enough; giving into a massive craving for chocolate - really should have held out; stiff neck muscles - should use better posture, etc. Now that it seems these are actually symptoms of migraines, I feel less guilty about them.

But my problem is this:

Am I just latching onto this because I don't want to take responsibility for myself???

Re: Migraines

(Anonymous)
The thing is, all those alternative reasons you listed can actually feed into migraines as well. So, not going to bed early enough can cause / exacerbate migraines, as well as causing sleepiness. Chocolate is a well known trigger for migraines, so eating it might have brought your migraine on, as well as wanting to eat it being a sign of one coming, and if your posture is bad, you're gonna get stiff neck muscles, which make migraines worse, as well as migraines tightening those muscles. Sorry for the hideous overuse of the word "migraines" there!

One good thing to do is to try and keep a diary of when you get them, along with what you eat and drink each day, how tired you are, how stressed you are, where in your cycle you are if you're female, and anything else you think might be relevant. Often patterns emerge and you can avoid your triggers and really reduce the amount you get. Some things to watch out for especially are coffee, chocolate, cheese and orange, or a combination of those, as they're common triggers, not eating regularly enough, not drinking enough, and also taking pain killers too often. You take them to try and get rid of the pain, but if you carry on doing so for a few too many days, you get rebound headaches.

All of that said though, I would still go to your doctor if you think it might be migraines. What's the worst that can happen? He or she will say that it's not, and you realise that okay, it is time to take bit more responsibility for yourself. I mean, you don't have to go in saying it IS migraine, just that you've been having bad headaches and didn't know what to do about it. It's their job to set you straight about health matters, and there's no shame in being wrong about it, even if it was because you were latching on to something for other reasons. But then if you are right - and it sounds like there's a good amount of stuff that says you would be; after all, the hypochondriac rarely stops to ask if he or she might be doing other things to cause their symptoms - you hopefully get treatment and don't have to put up with them any more.

Good luck to you anon. I've had a chronic headache condition with migraine and other neurological weirdness for 4 years now and had migraines on their own for 5 years before that, so I know it all really, really sucks. If there's anything else you want to ask, feel free and I'll try to help. I'm not a medical professional but I've done a lot of reading, seen a lot of consultants, and in some ways the most important thing, I've lived it. I'll post this anon, but if you want to PM or whatever, give me a shout in a comment :)

Dopey, Mushy Optimist But...

I was thinking, if Olivia Poulet and Benedict Cumberbatch split once before and worked it out, as seen in this interview wherein Poulet is obviously the woman in question......

"Following his spectacular gap year, Cumberbatch went to Manchester University, where he began a long-term relationship with a fellow student. Just prior to Benedict going on the four-month shoot to South Africa last July, his girlfriend delivered a bombshell.

"My break-up was completely out of the blue" he says. "I had been very nervous for us because of where we were in our relationship and because I was going away for such a long time. It was a cause for anxiety but the actual break-up itself was a big surprise. That heartbroken feeling was painful and I thought 'I have to be resourceful'. I was so buoyed up by the people around me in South Africa - they were family."

What's not to say they won't be able to work it out and reconcile again?

Re: Dopey, Mushy Optimist But...

(Anonymous)
It's certainly possible! There are some people who are like that. :) I suppose it really depends on why they broke up. But if they simply grew apart, maybe it's best if they don't get back together? I dunno. I just wish them both the best, and hope that whatever happens they both end very happy.

Have you ever read fanfic with such an amazingly original premise you thought, "Wow, I would read this with switched characters as a standalone original piece"? It doesn't have to be an AU, it could just be an amazingly well-written story.

Now, the knee-jerk reaction is normally, "Yes, of course!" but really think about it. If Sherlock wasn't the lead character, or if there wasn't slash in the fic and it was changed to het, or if it was set in America instead of England or whatever, would it still be enjoyable, do you think?

To be honest, no, not at all. There are fics with premises that could make for good original fiction if rewritten, but a straight up name switch, no. Fanfic always assumes a baseline level of familiarity with the canon characterization, and the component parts, the characters, come to the author pre-fabricated. Change Sherlock to David, and suddenly he's a flat character. Without the canon doing the heavy lifting of fleshing out his personality and character, I'm not going to engage with that character and I'm not interested in reading about him.

Gay versus het versus gen, or set in England versus Nova Scotia really has no bearing on it.

I think I need to enlist some help in a search for a fill here...

There was a fill on this meme involving a young Lestrade, and at the end the filler had posted an image of young RG in a leather jacket looking all sexy and whatnot. I want to say that it was seaweedie's nightclub fic, but I'm not certain, and either way I've only bookmarked that fic on their journal and not the meme and now I can't find it in the FPP.

Silly me, I've started a painting based on that image and appear to have deleted it from my computer (proof that I really should learn to check my trash before emptying it into the abyss), and I'm turning up nothing helpful on Google images.

This has been a rather vague post, hasn't it? I'm just going to sit over here and be hopeful that someone can decipher my ramblings well enough to assist me.

I only have that other link too but I'm dead certain the image figured in Seaweedie's original fill. Best option might be for you to PM the author?

Freeman or Cumberbatch on TV?

(Anonymous)
I've watched that episode of Have I got News For You with Cumberbatch and Never Mind the Buzzcock with Freeman and enjoyed both enormously (despite probably missing a good deal of the jokes due to my non-Britishness). Now I'm asking if you know any other shows where either one of our leading men has appeared (either as a host or a guest)? Doesn't matter whether they're older or more recent episodes, I'll gladly take anything I can get. ;)

Re: Freeman or Cumberbatch on TV?

(Anonymous)
WATCH OFFICE!!!!!!!!!!!!! the british original version with Ricky Gervais in the role of Steven Carrell. I think the most well-known show with Freeman in it must be that one.
