This is a place for all sorts of off-topic discussion.

You can post anon or un-anon, per your personal preference, as usual.

All I ask is that you stay civil and (hopefully) friendly.

If you also want to use this thread to try to find a beta for a fic, or ask a brit-pick-ish question, I think that would be an acceptable use. Have fun!

So, did I miss some rule on what to do before you can post a comment on the sherlockbbc comm? Because I tried to do so several days ago and it isn't showing.

I know there were several problems with comments not showing up a few weeks back. Was there a link in your comment because then it could be that the mods still haven't changed their settings.

Quick (if weird) couple of questions for a fic.

- Which Swedish newspapers or news magazines are considered "high brow" or highly regarded?
- Which newspapers would you consider to have a particularly good international reputation?

Any help from you lovely anons would be much appreciated! :-)

I don't know if I just dreamed this up or something, but is there a way to "ignore" a person, so that their comments/posts don't show up for you? Not directed at anyone in the meme. Just someone on another comm who's giving me major secondhand embarrassment every time she posts.

I don't think there's an "ignore" option (other than the traditional one), sadly enough. But if they're spamming/being stupid on your journal or a community you moderate, I think you can ban them from viewing and/or posting there?

Woe is me

(Anonymous)
I have to get a root canal tomorrow and I am, unsurprisingly, not looking forward to it at all. :(

But I might get some vicodin out of it, which is pretty ace

Ouch! Hope they'll find a way not to make it too painful for you.

(Mycroft says mpopet mx. He's probably conveying a message of sympathy in his own twisted way.)

Any lawyers here?

(Anonymous)
Say someone was kidnapped and Lestrade (or any police officer, really) had a hunch about where they were being held. Worried about what was happening to the victim, he went bursting in without bothering to get a warrant. In doing so, he caught the criminal in the act of attempted murder or what have you.

My question is, can the criminal be charged with attempted murder, or will it be thrown out of court because Lestrade didn't get a warrant?

Re: Any lawyers here?

If this were the US all he'd have to do was "hear someone call help". But I have no idea what the law is like in Britan. I'm curious to know the answer.

crying fetish fic search

I know I read this story, though I can't remember if it was on the meme or not. In it, John has a fetish for people crying (it starts out describing his high school girlfriend crying a lot and him liking it) and since Sherlock can cry on cue, he does that a lot and John loves it. I remember the word "dacryphilia" being used because it was a new one for me (I usually use "lacrymal" if I'm going to use a fancy word for crying-related things) but I'm utterly, utterly striking out googling it. Anybody know what I'm talking about?

I'm posting this here because I don't want to hijack/derail the prompt itself. From the prompt page:

Someone please write fem!Sherlock and fem!John rubbing their nipples against each other. Possibly during an act of sexual congress?

Does anyone have any plausible scenarios for why this would be happening that do NOT involve sexual congress? Because I'm coming up blank. I have faith in the collective imagination of the meme!

If the OP was thinking that clothed counts, a hug? Stuck in a tight spot face to face?

Clichés you love?

(Anonymous)
So, the rant post is full of Sherlock fic clichés that are starting to annoy people... but what are the things you know are overdone but still can't get enough of? That hit your buttons every time, no matter how often you read them?

I still like 'it's all fine' in all variations. Or Sherlock being described as pale and angular. Hm.

Re: Clichés you love?

John telling Sherlock he's beautiful/gorgeous/etc during the throes of passion, Sherlock having mad skillz in the bedroom, John's "it's all fine", the skull being Victor Trevor.... I am sure I have a ton more lol but those are the first that pop to mind.

Have any of you, non-native speaker epsecially, ever tried to fill a promt?

(Anonymous)
I really really want to fill prompts, but well, my English honestly sucks. Have any of you ever tried to fill a prompt before? Even though you know your English isn't perfect/you make a lot of mistakes?

I don't know what to do. Of course I thought of looking for a beta, but I think I would probably end up scaring away my beta with my awful English. So when I see a prompt that I really really want to fill, I feel really, IDK, frustrated? :'( Maybe this should to go to the rant post instead.

Re: Have any of you, non-native speaker epsecially, ever tried to fill a promt?

(Anonymous)
From what you wrote in your comment I wouldn't say your English is awful, on the contrary it is very good for a non-native speaker. Admittedly I am one too. But my advise is, that you should just try and write a fanfiction when you feel inspired to do so. If you make a note that you are not a native speaker, people usually are very tolerant and helpful when it comes to mistakes, so don't worry.

Also, perhaps try and write shorter stories first, with short sentences and words you are familiar with (you know when you think of a good word in your own language and then look it up in the dictionary, because you don't know the English word and your dictionary gives you words you have never seen? Try to use another word or ask someone if it can be used in the context you want to use it.), it makes it easier to correct mistakes and you are less likely to make many mistakes in the first place.

When you are looking for a beta and specify that you are a non-native speaker you won't scare anyone away, there are even beta's who "specialize" in non-native speakers and have a lot of patience and not only mark mistakes but explain why it is a mistake, so you have an additional learning effect.

Most of all just have fun writing. Write when you feel like it and don't panic too much about it, everyone makes mistakes and there are tons of non-native author's out there. It also is a great way of practicing your English! Just go for it, you'll do fine, I am sure of it :)!

Fandom is pretty much the best thing ever

(Anonymous)
because I can't imagine any other context in which I'd get to post THIS:

I need to do some research on a kink.

I'm writing a BDSM fill (not for the meme) in which the D is also M.

Not having any first-hand experience with this, though, I'd like to know a bit more before I write something completely unrealistic.

Anyone have either personal experience or resources to share?

Anon because I'm worried the prompter will see this, and I don't want to spoil her.

Re: Fandom is pretty much the best thing ever

(Anonymous)
I was in a D&S relationship with a dominant masochist at one point, and I'm a mostly sub switch who is a bit of a service top so it worked out quite well. Ask away....

One thing I did notice was that roles blur all to hell :) That's probably me being switchy but still while I was hurting him, watching his face change was a bit of a power trip... Didn't change the underlying dom/sub dynamic generally but in those moments things did change.

sherlock_fans sherlock_fans sherlock_fans

I know some other "sherlockbbc alternate" comms have tried and failed to get going, so I need your help getting the word out.

I don't delude myself that we'll ever get all their members, or even half, to join, but spreading the word, becoming a member, and even just crossposting your fanworks there would go a long way in making this a viable community.

P.S. I promise I'm not crazy, evil, or crazy-evil.

Het fics, please!

(Anonymous)
Variety is the spice of life, and I currently have a desire to take a brief break from all this delicious slash for some Sherlock-with-a-woman fics. I've read all the fem!John/Sherlock and Molly/Sherlock fics from the meme currently archived on delicious, along with saathi's John/Sarah/Sherlock fics. You would have my eternal gratitude if you could point me to any I've missed.

ETA

(Anonymous)
Or Mycroft! I can't believe I forgot about delightful Mycroft. Would welcome any links to Mycroft het (and again, have checked out all the ones currently on the delicious.)

Re: Het fics, please! (Anonymous) Expand
Today, I had the lovely task of telling two teens going at it in their car in the parking lot to "stop it."

There was also the added delight of informing them that there were cameras present that were pointing in their direction.

Being an avid reader of this kinkmeme, I couldn't help but smile at the thought that Mycroft was somewhere, watching...

lol, in the parking lot?

I would have driven somewhere a wee bit more secluded...

turning brown eyes blue

(Anonymous)
So, since when does John have blue eyes, because from every shot I can tell Martin Freeman has brown eyes.
