This is a place for all sorts of off-topic discussion.

You can post anon or un-anon, per your personal preference, as usual.

All I ask is that you stay civil and (hopefully) friendly.

If you also want to use this thread to try to find a beta for a fic, or ask a brit-pick-ish question, I think that would be an acceptable use. Have fun!

I'm fairly new to the fandom, and am finding it very difficult to keep up with all the fics that are posted everyday. I come from the lovely fandom of Merlin which has a comm that posts all fics (Merlin/Arthur pairing) that are posted daily.

http://community.livejournal.com/mxa_news/

I'm curious, is there a Sherlock comm similar to this which I can go to instead of refreshing the kink meme filled posts, etc.?

If not, I recommend a very dedicated member to make this comm. It's so useful - just a lot of hard work imo! Thank you for any help <3

For this comm, the delicious account: http://www.delicious.com/sherlockbbcfic

For other Sherlock fic (it does not archive kink meme fic and includes all Holmes iterations): http://community.livejournal.com/holmesian_news/

Anon is British but being silly - when referencing the London Underground, would you call it the Tube, the tube or The Tube? :)

I think I would call it the Tube.

British food question

(Anonymous)
Okay, so when making casseroles and the like, what would you use if you needed a creamy soup base? (I'm thinking along the lines of cream of mushroom soup, or cream of celery, or even cream of chicken, but that negates the vegetarian possibilities of a lot of casseroles...)

I just got a 50 dollar amazon gift card and I am using this as an oppurtunity to get some more books (even though I have too many as it is)

I've already ordered Good Omens because I've heard everyone rave about it and I'm late to the party. Do you guys have any recommendations for books featuring gay and (especially) lesbian characters as main characters? (I've read Maurice and others that were pretty good.) I pretty like any genre and I don't mind what time period it takes place. I would prefer fiction but I wouldn't say no to a good memoir.

Or just give me the titles of really good books you've read recently. Anything is good :D

*opportunity

I always spell that wrong for some reason

My roommate almost poisoned me

(Anonymous)
I went to have a vodka shot and it tasted really foul in a chemical sort of way so I spit it out without swallowing. Then there was the "what the fuck did I just out in my mouth?" sort of yelling, vigorous rinsing, reading of labels, and a call to poison control.

He's a (newbie) home brewer. Apparently, he used the shot glass to measure out the acid sanitizer he uses on his beer kegs (50% phosphoric acid, 15% dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid). He set the shot glass back next to the drinks and forgot about it.

Poison control says that if I actually swallowed some, I'd know by now.

So no harm done, but apparently I need to start washing every kitchen implement thoroughly before using.

I feel like something out of a meme prompt.

John, I told you this would happen sooner rather than later. If absolutely necessary my spare bedroom is still open, but since Clara has finally come back home I'd really prefer if you worked out your problems with your secretly homicidal boyfriend on your own.

Above anon is back and de-anoning because she feels like it.

What underground station would you get off at if you wanted to be a Baker Street-y direction without getting off at Baker Street Station?

I'm hoping to stay off of the Jubilee line for various reasons. Could any Londoners recommend anything? I'm trying my best, but neither my occasional trips to the West End nor my attempts to compare a road atlas and an underground map are doing much for me. :)

I've walked there from Euston, as that saved changing lines and getting another train that I didn't already have a card for.

Mycroft Fic Recs?

(Anonymous)
So, I have this craving for Mycroft fics. But I'm having trouble finding ones that fit my personal mental image of Mycroft. Yes, he's an overprotective older brother who loves Sherlock, but he's also the British Government and literally embodies the concept of Big Brother. His idea of taking care of his younger brother is to try and bribe his flatmate into spying on him! I'm not saying he's evil, but I also think his morals are probably greyer than Sherlock and John's, and I'm sure he's had to make many unsavoury decisions. Are there any fics that deal with that particular aspect of Mycroft? It seems all I can find these days are domestic shmoop or fics that seem to revolve more around Sherlock being the center of his attention.

tl;dr - I'm interested in Mycroft fics where his life doesn't solely revolve around Sherlock and we get to see him portrayed as more than a nicer version of Sherlock. He's more polite and courteous, I'm sure, but I certainly don't think he's nicer.

I'm going to do the cheesy self-rec thing and point you to this little Mycroft 221b fic I did not too long ago:

anon was thinking about it today and couldn't figure it out - what would you say John's job actually is? I always figured he was a GP, but now I realised that's probably not right.

Any thoughts?

Yes, he's a GP. But he's probably only doing locum work rather than being a full time employee. He's definitely not a partner.

Totally off-topic trans awareness video

(Anonymous)
Hello! I hope it's alright to share this here, but basically I thought this would be a good place to do so as this is a very trans-friendly fandom.

My LGBTQ group recently made a video to raise trans awareness (it's our biggest campaign this term, and we've also managed to get gender neutral toilets installed in one building and a promise to always put them in new builds) and it would be great if you could watch it and/or share it with others.

Thank you!

Here is the vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J8Q8ublZ4JQ

Today on the bus I noticed someone had written "love yourself" in pigpen cipher on one of the posts. If it wasn't for this series, I wouldn't have known how to decipher it. <3

What's that look like?

I sort of think I remember a thread for meme quotes... does it exist? Or am I hallucinating?

You mean this one?

http://sherlockbbc-fic.livejournal.com/5284.html?thread=17441188#t17441188

Due to the earthquake in Japan, I can't use Youtube, Google, Yahoo, etc. It drives me crazy... Because I don't know what's going on out there.

what sites can you get? could try the BBC international page?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/

Is it only me or the meme is actually slowing down? '_'? I don't know if this is a good thing or bad thing..to me.

I have the impression that Sherlock fandom in general is slowing down a bit.

Other writing comms?

(Anonymous)
I've been trying to get back into writing original fic lately, but my brain keeps being grabbed by prompts here. I think finding a similar community for OF would help a lot, though it's fairly likely they just don't exist.

Does anyone know of any good prompting/discussion communities for original fiction?

not sure if this matters but the sherlockbcc com seems to be on sf_d O.O

Erm, what's sf_d?
