This is a place for all sorts of off-topic discussion.

You can post anon or un-anon, per your personal preference, as usual.

All I ask is that you stay civil and (hopefully) friendly.

If you also want to use this thread to try to find a beta for a fic, or ask a brit-pick-ish question, I think that would be an acceptable use. Have fun!

It's definitely a basement flat. Since 221 doesn't have an area at the front then the room with the window is at the back or that part of the flat (probably more of a bedsit) is only one room deep.

This is such a strange question to ask but...

(Anonymous)
How do you know you're straight?

I'm 25 and I've never gotten close enough to a man to do more than go on one or two casual dates. (Is this a socialization issue? Is it because I grew up going to female-only schools and, now that I'm out in the real world, I don't know how to interact with men?)

I've tried dating/sleeping with women. My conclusion was that I'm not a lesbian and that it just doesn't work for me.

So logically I'm... what? Doomed to be alone?

Re: This is such a strange question to ask but...

(Anonymous)
sounds like you're badly socialized with the opposite gender, but certainly not doomed. Try making more male friends, without the context of dating - might help you feel better interacting with them in general?

Why do I even bother filling anon?

It's so blatantly, absurdly identifiable as my writing. And yet, I go through the charade nearly every time.

Guess i just really like the captcha. *** waves to Mycroft ***

I feel that way too about the fics I wrote anon. But no one ever called me out on them, so I guess my style isn't that obvious.

Have you ever been in that moment where everything is falling apart and everything is complete shit, and you want to add to the end of your prompt "Please someone fill this because life isn't going so great right now and a fill would just lift my spirits" but can't because that's begging and guilting a fill and that's just pathetic?

Yeah. Sometimes I really would like to do that.

Also, I only have 1 real life friend so when shit happens and I need to talk to someone, I always think "To the meme!" I may not be talking about my issues but dang, everyone here is so fucking awesome that I can distract myself. You guys rock!

I know this has nothing to do with lifting your spirits, but you posted or seconded a prompt on part 2 (? or something, a long time ago) that made me start writing. Now I haven't finished the fic, because the subject matter is extremely difficult, but every day I add just a tiny bit more. And when I've had rough times (and recently there have been many...some rather serious) I am always reminded that the person with the starry icon would probably still like to read the fic, so I should probably not...you know...off myself.

So...I think you're awesome too.

This is a strange message.

So it's been a few weeks and I haven't heard back from an OP re: a question so I can post my fill. Do I just post it? I'm not sure it was what they wanted but now it seems they aren't checking it so does it not matter?

British/London question

(Anonymous)
If Londoners were to go on a day or weekend trip to the country, where are some places they might commonly go? I'm talking about the quiet, picturesque, surrounded-by-farmland-or-forests kind of towns that someone might retire to or go on a romantic getaway with their spouse.

Re: British/London question

(Anonymous)
Bath? Cheltenham?

For smaller places that are see as typically 'English' one of the Cotswold villages - Bourton on the Water, Morton in the Marsh, Stow on the Wold or for comedy value Upper or Lower Slaughter (nicer than they sound).

All within 100 miles of London - England is so small and transport links out of London so good that most places only take a few hours by train.

If you want really in the country surrounded by forest though - probably Scotland which would be a flight. Most of England isn't that rural, and the parts of Wales that are that rural tend to be mountains and heath.

the "take my card" thing

(Anonymous)
So in TBB, Sherlock tells John to take his card from the kitchen table and hop off (again). I am aware someone must have asked this somewhere, and do forgive me for that, but I just don't know what to make of it.

As far as I know, you need a PIN number to use a debit/credit card. And it is advised that you should never ever let anyone know your PIN number, even if, oh I don't know, even if you are a high-functioning sociopath and that anyone saved your life by shooting the baddie from two windows away. Yet there he is, ever so casually, "take my card," leaving my funny little mind feeling stupid for bringing this up at all.

What should I infer from this? The writers (or the writer) think that those two got that close over time? There's such a small sum of money in that account that it probably does not matter? It is a desperate excuse to send John over to the table and discover the blade mark? (and what would a man like Sherlock use for a PIN? 13 to 16 decimal digits of pi?) Stop thinking too much and go back to your essay? Enlighten me.

+captcha says "for oftrea". Is that her name for this week, Mycroft?

Re: the "take my card" thing

(Anonymous)
I chalk it up to a plot device to get the card in John's wallet later (when Ms. minion-of-Moriarty finds it).

John's military rank

(Anonymous)
Army doctors would typically have officer status, right? Does anyone know what rank John would have been?

Re: John's military rank

I heard Freeman on the commentary calling John an officer, yes. I don't think John, as a doctor, would have fit into the normal military hierarchy - he'd likely have been in a separate list for medical personnel. I'm not sure about the details, unfortunately.

first we take the kinkmeme

I was going to prompt something based on "First We Take Manhattan" by Leonard Cohen, but I don't know how to prompt it, seeing as a lot of the song can be applied to several of the characters. So I've decided to post my prompt ideas here, and if there's any other Leonard Cohen fans on the meme, maybe we can chat:

I can't decide whether John or Sherlock would be the narrator in that fic
I mean these lines are obviously Sherlock "Thank you for the items that you gave me/I mean the monkey and the plywood violin". But "I'm guided by a signal in heavens...I'm guided by the beauty of our weapons" seems more John. Of course, "I don't like your fashion buissness, mister/I don't like the drugs that keep you thin" could be *totally* directed at Mycroft. (I can also see it as John and Sherlock in a bit of dystopia, where British democracy is a farce.)

Anyone have other ideas? Or want to talk about the greatness that is Leonard Cohen?

Re: first we take the kinkmeme

i am so down for discussing the badassitude of lenny c. always.

actually, i think you could go john all the way with this. the first line you quoted could be from john's pov, if sherlock is the one doing the leaving. and all the other ones, yeah, i could see them being him as well. although, "they sentenced me to twenty years of boredom" is something sherlock would be more likely to say. hmmmm.

but, um, "you loved me as a loser, but now you're worried that i just might win/you know the way to stop me, but you don't have the discipline" could be an awesomely creepy moriarty vs sherlock (or hell, moriarty vs anyone!) scenario.

no, i did not see this title and sing "first we take the kinkmeme, then we take berlin!" before i even read the post. uh...

Myers Briggs my fandom!

(Anonymous)
So for fun and character insights I've been thinking about John and Sherlock's Myers-Briggs types.

So far I have Sherlock as INTJ.

Very strong I - finds other people a drain on his energy.

Strong N (although he is strong S as well - I think this is maybe what makes him Sherlock Holmes: he takes external information and can sythesisze it into the big picture.)

Very strong T (self expalanatory!)

J - likes to have a goal, and likes things organised, in his own weird makes-no-sense-to-anyone-else way.

John as ESFP

Moderate E - in the sense of liking to be with people, needing to be doing something and saying what's on his mind, rather than needing to be the centre of attenntion.

Strong S - to Sherlock's disapproval 'you see, but you do not observe'

Mild F - not sure about this one, everyone's more F than Sherlock. John has a science background and was in the army, both of which attract Ts more than Fs but he does look at how decisions affect people and...shoots people when he thinks it's the right thing to do as opposed to being legal.

Moderate P: open to change, can deal with chaos - although anyone who has been in the army will have some J drilled into them.

Anyone else got any thoughts?

Re: Myers Briggs my fandom!

(Anonymous)
I see Sherlock as an ISTP.

I because in spite of needing an audience for his brilliance, he also needs his alone time to think and recharge.

S because he is far more interested in concrete facts than abstract theories. What makes him Sherlock Holmes is his incredible eye for and attention to minute physical details. Afterwards, he can theorize towards the big picture, but he'll never do it the opposite way around ("It is a capital mistake to theorize before one has data. Insensibly one begins to twist facts to suit theories, instead of theories to suit facts." Of course, that's ACD Holmes, but I read them the same on this).

T because...yeah. Sherlock Holmes.

P because he really couldn't care less about complying with laws and social conventions (perfectly willing to break into suspect's houses, for example), his apartment is a mess, he tends to act on the spur of the moment.

John I'm not so sure, but I'd say INFJ.

And I thought this fandom was reasonably sane....

I hadn't heard of mycrofting. But now that I look at it, it just looks like a celebrity watch kind of com. Don't those always attract the tinhatters and stalkers?

I just stick to fanworks oriented coms.

inspector lestrade: o.g.!

polling time, meme! basically, i'm trying to pick a first name for lestrade. usually, i just call him "lestrade" or "inspector", but i've come to the point where john's going to need to call him by a first name. it seems like he is usually greg or geoff, but i am stumped here :( which, of the following, seems the most "lestrade" to you? yes, i am now trolling baby name websites D:

-greg(ory), means "watchful". i like this, but am still not quite sold.
-geoff(rey), probably means "peaceful". for reasons relating to the fic i am writing, i like this, but am not a fan of the actual name.
-gavin, means "white hawk", which is lolarious. i don't know if i see lestrade as a gavin, but i could definitely see gav.
-george, means "farmer" or something, idek. i just like it because of st george and the dragon.

alternatively, what else do you think the g might possibly stand for?

Re: inspector lestrade: o.g.!

I like Geoffrey or Gabriel, personally, but I kind of went with majority opinion "Greg" the one time I used it, just because it seemed simplest.

Sex tips?

(Anonymous)
Okay, so I'm a woman and my girlfriend is coming to visit for the weekend, and I'd really like to try out the new queen size bed I have with her.

The problem is that we're both pretty inexperienced, and so far we've only done some intense making out, frottage (I'm pretty sure she came, I didn't), and a little bit of exploring with our fingers of each other's vagina/clitoris. I'll love to try oral sex, or more stuff using our fingers, or, well anything. I'll be talking with her about this too, and seeing what she feels comfortable with trying, but I was wondering if other anons had any tips or ideas for us.

*is never more grateful to be anon*

Okay, TMI about me time, lol I'm openly poly and omni and have had girlfriends and female lovers in my life sooooooooo... my 2 cents worth is really relax and try to have fun, no pressure on the sex part of the visit. I mean, plan on it if that's the plan, but don't be like "Okay, it's seven. time to do it!". Something I've found that keeps things fun and light is a mutual shower and that also does away with niggling "OMG what if i taste weird/smell weird?" feelings some women have when oral sex is imminent.

Alright kids: Give me your best distraction.
What do you do (besides the meme of course! and drugs...) to get escape your own mind? I need to get away from some thoughts, and any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't mean like "Read a book! Go on a walk!" I need something specific. Is there a website? A game? Anything I can do to help me forget myself if not only for a little while at least?

Please help.

Hello everyone on this wonderful and very addictive meme!

I hope this is the right place to ask, but for this awesome fill that I'm following with the fire of 1000 suns:

Indexed here: http://sherlockbbc-fic.livejournal.com/1047.html?thread=6832919#t6832919

#4 PROMPT: Sherlock is fascinated by a virgin girl!Watson age and begins conducting experiments.
FILL: http://sherlockbbc-fic.livejournal.com/2727.html?thread=6345127#t6345127

The final part of the prompt is missing but the page has reached max comment limit already so I have no way of knowing if it was ever completed elsewhere. I'm wondering if the story was ever finished and if it was where can I find it?

Thank you :)

I just read this yesterday and got to 29/30...

TWENTY-NINE OF THIRTY AND IT STOPS.

AAAAAUGH.

Sorry, I can't help, just commiserate. Somehow it's worse when I know it's only missing a few paragraphs.
