This is a place for all sorts of off-topic discussion.

You can post anon or un-anon, per your personal preference, as usual.

All I ask is that you stay civil and (hopefully) friendly.

If you also want to use this thread to try to find a beta for a fic, or ask a brit-pick-ish question, I think that would be an acceptable use. Have fun!

Sequel to "Match"?

(Anonymous)
Anybody remember that John/rugby team non-con fic a while back, called "Match"? The author said maybe there would be a sequel. Anybody heard anything about that or know if the sequel ever got posted anywhere?

Re: Informal meta-fandom data-gathering poll thinger

I've written meta on this in my own journal, because it's an important thing for me, but I'm not sure how much I want to end up in someone's acafen analysis.

Inspired by the above question...

What's the "proper" term for a house of ill repute in the UK? Whorehouse, brothel, cat house (I think that might be strictly American/Southern)...? If there's more than one, what term would someone like John say as opposed to someone like Mycroft or Sherlock?

Re: Inspired by the above question...

I call them brothels. And I live near one, so yeah XD

I'm totally daft when it comes to accents, not gonna lie. I have a hard time differentiating between them even when the people are from completely different parts of the world.

So could someone tell me what kind of accent Mike Stamford has? It seems stronger to me in the pilot episode than in the actual episode aired, but maybe there's still a bit of it there? I'm very curious.

N.E. England IIRC

Share Your Crushes

Anyone else here in the grips of unrequited love? Mine's absolutely gorgeous, looks like a cross between Anthea and Kate Middleton, aand had the chutzpah to make a pass at me in front of her mom and oma but I was too thick to realize it until it was too late. It's been months since I last saw her but I still carry a torch. *sigh*

Re: Share Your Crushes

(Anonymous)
Mine's kind and cuddly. People who know these things better than I do say that he likes me back, but I've never seen any signs. Also I know he's a sexual person, so I'd rather admire from a distance than risk it and grow to resent him. Doesn't ease the loneliness, though.

Just read Sign of the Four and damn, does Holmes hate the ladies in that one. However, "his Watson" does go and marry one of them at the end, even after Holmes composes him a lullaby and demonstrates his mad domestic skills. "You have yet to recognize my merits as a housekeeper," he says to Watson.

So my question is, how much of the homo-romantic tension do you think is intentional? Is over a century of cultural evolution retconning subtext that wasn't there before? I mean, I've read gay-themed novels where the actual text is less charged that ACD's subtext.

On the one hand - everyone has their own interpretations, subtext, YMMV, etc. On the other hand, this is actually canon:

Both Holmes and I had a weakness for the Turkish bath. It was over a smoke in the pleasant lassitude of the drying-room that I have found him less reticent and more human than anywhere else. On the upper floor of the Northumberland Avenue establishment there is an isolated corner where two couches lie side by side, and it was on these that we lay upon September 3, 1902, the day when my narrative begins. I had asked him whether anything was stirring...

I mean. Come on.

need an idea

(Anonymous)
I'm writing something in which Jim leaves a message on one of our heroes' bodies.

Preferably something that can be drawn rather than written, as its location means it has to be something small. (So, "I'll burn the heart out of you" would take too much space, but an image of a burning heart would fit just fine. But I'd prefer not to use that one.)

I'm totally stuck. What might it be? Anyone have an idea?

"No hiding place" and a smiley face?

Technical difficulties

So...something happened. When I track a post, it no longer sends me a message when there are new comments. However, if I leave a comment, I still get a message when there is a reply to my comment. I don't know why or what or...anything. Advice?

Did you max your notifications out? You're only allowed so many, depending on your account level. You may have to go to your notifications page and untrack some of your older ones.

Am I the only one who has noticed their tea consumption spiking up ever since starting to frequent this meme? I mean, I've always loved tea, but damn. I assume there are only so many times you can read someone putting the kettle on without it having some kind of an effect on you.

No, but my intake of fluids spiked after I started visiting a meme that regularly has a "what are you drinking now?" thread.

I should thank the nonnie since I never drink enough - which isn't all that healthy.

This is my Sherrinford Holmes (who has lodged in my fanon brain as the youngest brother, rather than eldest), and I CANNOT UNSEE:

All I can see when I look at him is a Holmes brother. It's a bit distracting.

I can't find a good pic of him at the mo' but in my head, Sherrinford is "played" by Hamish Linklater.

For me as well. And I've heard from several other people that they're experiencing problems.

Plus, the notifs are slow.

Canonisation vs. What we have now

(Anonymous)
I have a question. How would you react if Sherlock/John was made canon?

I'm not saying it will, I'm not saying it should or has to, I just would like to hear reactions to the idea. Everyone is entitled to an opinion, and I believe there is no right or wrong in this.

Personally, I would be initially happy, and then a wary suspicion would set in. How would the writers handle it? Would they destroy the love I can see in their current friendship? Etcetera ad nauseum. Sometimes canonising a ship is well done, and other times it could crash and burn. As much as I love S/J and the writers of the show, I would be eternally paranoid of the latter happening.

Re: Canonisation vs. What we have now

(Anonymous)
I wouldn't like it. As Moffat and Gatiss always say, the appeal of the stories was always Holmes and Watson's friendship. Making Sherlock/John canon in the verse they've already set up could only be awkward and I don't think it would come across well to the viewers.

Christina Rossetti's take on S/J

Sherlock/John shippers, pray don't kill me. But I'm currently rereading Rossetti's poems and this just elicited a strong giggle.

Christina Rossetti, "No, thank you, John" (selected stanzas)

I never said I love you, John,
Why will you tease me day by day,
And elicit a weariness to think upon
With always "do" and "pray"?

I have no heart? Perhaps I have not;
But then you're mad to take offense
That I don't give you what I've not got:
Use your common sense.

Let us strike hands as hearty friends
No more, no less; and friendship's good:
Only don't keep in view ulterior ends,
And points not understood

In open treaty. Rise above
Quibbles and shuffling off and on:
Here's friendship for you if you like, but love,—
No, thank you, John.

Re: Christina Rossetti's take on S/J

Until I looked this up, I completely read it from a male to male pov, never even crossed my mind the speaker was a woman. But I just can't not see this as something Sherlock would say.

God, this would make a killer prompt.

LiveJournal may be down for up to one hour starting at 1 p.m. Pacific time on Wednesday, March 2, 2011, as we will be performing some network changes.
You can convert that to your local timezone here.

Maybe this would be a good time to step outside and get some fresh air, but I am more interested in whether there is some other place people are going to ramble about Sherlock or be ridiculous for that hour.

I'm taking this as a sign I need to work on my actual work, lol, and step away from the meme. *shifty* Maybe. Or just linger about, waiting for LJ to come back online.
