This is a place for all sorts of off-topic discussion.

You can post anon or un-anon, per your personal preference, as usual.

All I ask is that you stay civil and (hopefully) friendly.

If you also want to use this thread to try to find a beta for a fic, or ask a brit-pick-ish question, I think that would be an acceptable use. Have fun!

Re: Britpick question - looking for a hospital

Actually the best thing to do is to go into google maps then search in the area you want for hospitals, you can do the same with schools, restaurants etc. You can then use the directions setting to see how far they are from Baker Street either on foot, car or public transport.

Cabin Pressure

(Anonymous)
I just got into the series Cabin Pressure and I seem to remember a Sherlock x-over with it I read months ago that included them (Sherlock and Mycroft and possibly Lestrade and John) playing the evil name game with the actors of Sherlock... I've looked but can't find it again.

So could I have a link if anyone knows it... or have I just confused myself somewhere along the line.

*does a happy dance... except doesn't because she's at work at the moment and her boss might think it was odd*

That was me! Here you go.

Not the right canon but...

But if you think of it as inspiration, I'm sure you'll find in yourselves to forgive this anon:

Glooooooorrrrrious!

I'm a horrible person who's going straight to hell, but I wish the Sherlock RPF meme/comm were more active. I have such a guilty pleasure for RPF that I can't even explain.

Fuck shame. So you think guy on guy is hot. So what? So your panties get a little moist over the thought two famous guys banging. As long as you don't run up to them and demand they act out your fantasies in front of a media gallery, then what the fuck is the issue?

"I have your book in front of me..."

(Anonymous)
I have a delicate question here. In ACD's time, would people have been likely to use old newspapers as toilet paper, or did they have much nicer products by then? I know at that time in the U.S. they would (my grandmother still remembers the old Sears catalogue days) but I don't know about England.

Re: "I have your book in front of me..."

Found this at this website: http://www.toiletpaperhistory.net/toilet-paper-history/history-of-toilet-paper/

"In 1879, Walter Alcock, a British businessman, created toilet paper on a roll, too. He was the first that used the perforated toilet roll instead of the common flat sheets.

In 1880 the British Perforated Paper Company began selling toilet paper. That toilet paper was sold in boxes of individual squares."

Also, for what it's worth, here's a memorable fact:

"In 1935, Northern Tissue advertised "splinter-free" toilet paper. Yep, you read that right; early paper production techniques sometimes left splinters embedded in the paper. And you thought you had it tough!" (from http://nobodys-perfect.com/vtpm/exhibithall/informational/tphistory.html)

Baker street blueprints?

(Anonymous)
Has anyone ever drawn up a floor plan of 221B?

I'm trying to make a very basic one at the moment. So many questions...

For example, what the heck is behind that door in the hallway leading back from the kitchen? It seems as if that door leads to something that would overhang the ground floor, given that the off-kitchen hallway seems to extend beyond where there's a landing midway up the main stairwell (which has a window to the outside). Would such an overhang be odd?

Whatever's behind that door, it's probably not a tiny room like a closet or furnace, because light comes out from under it in the daytime, so it probably has its own window... I'm thinking it's either a bathroom or Sherlock's room? It seems odd to have to go through the kitchen to get to the bedroom. Also, in some shots, it almost looks like there's another door next to it... maybe a bedroom and bathroom...

TL;DR: Basically, I'm starting to obsess over 221B's floor plan, but if someone's been there and done that, I'd love to see/hear the results.

I've seen someone saying Sherlock's hair color is not acutally black but dark brown. what do you think? This actually kind of blew me away because I have dark brown hair myself accoring to his person. But I had never thought that my hair color was anything but black. :D
And to me, Sherlock's hair just looks almsot jet black!

It's difficult to say, I think it definitely looks black in ASiP but more closer to a dark brown in TBB. But in writing I always refer to it as black (and to his eyes as grey, though there's room for discussion regarding Cumberbatch's eyes).

Ok. I don't know if you've seen this, but I'll just leave it here anyway.
Made me think of Anderson...

*backs away slowly*

Talking to a friend of mine recently, he relayed that "I guess" is an Americanism while "I suppose" is more of a British turn of phrase and "I guess" is an annoying phrase in the UK. He himself is not British but lived there for a few years during a post university job. I suppose (heh) my question is... a.) is that the case and b.) are there any common turns of phrase that are more American than British but end up being used frequently among the majority of folks in major urban setting?

Sidebar: a funny story... a good friend of mine taught English overseas for a while (English as a foreign language class) and inadvertently taught her students "y'all". The word spread like wildfire through the village where she taught and she couldn't "unteach" it so somewhere out there, there's a village of non native speakers who use 'y'all' sprinkled in amongst their native tongue.

Couldn't say, but no worries, eleanorb will for sure be along with her answer soon enough.

Dreamin'

(Anonymous)
Haven't spotted anything along these lines so far--

Got any Sherlock-related dreams to share?

Re: Dreamin'

(Anonymous)
*raises hand shyly*

Yeah, have to admit I had a Sherlock-related dream and it was totally weird and fluffy.

Everyone, and I mean everyone, met at 221b Baker Street and watched TV together. Moriarty was clutching a stuffed animal and sitting in front of the sofa between Lestrade and Harry with Sherlock sitting behind him on the sofa. Harry had fallen asleep with her head against Jim's shoulder and he was all 'Noooo, mustn't fall asleep too, mustn't fall asleep...but it is so cozy and warm and...nooo, no falling asleep or Sherlock will start petting my hair.'...Which Sherlock had already started to do anyway.

Yes, I don't know either...

Rewatching ASiP.

Sherlock says to John in his rapid fire description/breakdown of John's phone, "You're a war hero."

I just found that interesting since Sherlock said he doesn't believe heroes exist in TGG.

The honeymoon phase passed quickly.

Are we in another week-long freeze? 'Cause it's been three or four days already...

Yes. It was mostly unexpected to have another so soon, I think. Some people are more annoyed by this than others.

Name of the bank in The Blind Banker?

(Anonymous)
Can anyone help? I know it began with S. Need it for a fic. Please don't make me watch the episode again!

*ties you to a chair*

WATCH IT! WATCH IT OR I WILL MAKE YOU REGRET THE DAY YOU WERE BORN!

(Sorry, I don't know the name of the bank. /o\)

(I don't think it was called 'searope', Mycroft, but thanks for trying.)

AU!FIC RECS PLEASE

(Anonymous)
I would love some nice hearty AU fic recs.

John is a werewolf? Go for it.
Sherlock is a BAMF superhero? I'd read it.
Mycroft is a supercomputer? Yesss.

Future!AU, alternate!AU, supernatural!AU (vampires, pixies, aliens, werewolves, anything), job!AU, ANYTHING!AU.

I am just craving some good AU fic. PLEASE~?

But in-character, please. Just because Sherlock is an alien in a fic or something doesn't mean he should be running around in pink dresses or something. Unless it's for a case, then okay.
