This is a place for all sorts of off-topic discussion.

You can post anon or un-anon, per your personal preference, as usual.

All I ask is that you stay civil and (hopefully) friendly.

If you also want to use this thread to try to find a beta for a fic, or ask a brit-pick-ish question, I think that would be an acceptable use. Have fun!

Do Brit's say they are "in Dutch" when they are in trouble, about to be reprimanded? What would be the equivalent phrase?

Not being British I couldn't say, but tell me, who does use that idiom? This American has never heard it or anything like it.

First, second, third

If you posted a prompt that didn't specify, would you be pissed if someone filled it in first person?

Re: First, second, third

I wouldn't. I'd just be thrilled at getting a fill.

Dear Newbies,

If you write it, someone will like it.

For every person who comments positively, three more will be too shy or can’t find anything to say. It doesn’t mean they didn’t love it.

It’s easier to rant than to defend. Ranters are also louder. It doesn’t mean they’re right.

Most people are nice, and will support you just for trying.

Fic on a meme like this is a gift, and all that matters is that you please the prompter and yourself. Pleasing others is just a bonus.

I am going to start my first fic tonight and it is all your fault.

(Mycroft says, "John victims". I think he has been reading my prompts...)

You know how occasionally you can watch a film and be a wee bit smitten by one of the characters -- not the actor, the character? When I was a kid, I had a select few characters from books like that. One of them was Dr. Watson from the Sherlock Holmes stories. Anybody else care to share the literary character(s) they'd most like to have coffee with?

Morwen and Telemain from The Enchanted Forest Chronicles. Or Mendenbar, or Cimorene from the same, or Daystar or Kazul...

Screw that- I want to go to one of their parties...

WHY CAN'T YOU BE REAL, FICTIONAL CHARACTERS!!!! T____T

save me...

(Anonymous)
i am a flailing idiot of epic proportions. there was this fill see, and it was hot, like so hot i'm going to need to rebuild my bunk from the pile of cinders it is now in. but me, being an idiot, did not bookmark it. the fic involves Sherlock who for the sake of investigation must go down on several women (with John's assistance naturally) and it all culminates in Mycroft being an ass and Sherlock and John getting it on in the kitchen. someone please take pity on my pathetic self and link me...

Please, could someone maybe explain to me the difference between:

I ought to
I'm supposed to
I should

Thanks :)

To my knowledge (english major, what? hell if they actually teach you anything useful) "I ought to" and "I should" imply essentially the same thing. They both are expressions of an intent to do something without any actual desire to do whatever it is and are accompanied by the distinct possibility that whatever it is will in fact be ignored. "I'm supposed to" can be used in the same context as the other two but is also often used in the context of "I'm supposed to be first" or other declarations made to establish order and/or prominence. Hopefully this is useful. If not, I shall pass the torch on to the rest of the lovely people on this site.

Help me, meme! I have several WIPs and I can't seem to finish them. (And I keep getting motivated to start new ones, which isn't helping.) What do you do to help you finish your work?

If I can't finish a story it means my subconscious is telling me there's something wrong with it. I have to re-read until I figure out where I went wrong. Usually what's wrong is I'm not writing the story I want to, because the idea (or prompt in this case) wasn't the story I wanted to tell and I'm trying to force the story into a shape it doesn't want to be in.

My stories aren't usually sentient, by the way.

Sometimes you just have to abandon and start over again.

Quick British word choice question: is "Saint Valentine's Day" routine shortened to just "Valentine's Day"?

Yes. Or just 'Valentine's', as in "What day is Valentine's?" or "You doing anything for Valentine's?"

Kiyoku Tadashiku Utsukushiku

After getting a couple of comments about my icon, I wondered how many of you guys liked the epic sparkling gloriousness that is *~Takarazuka~* Who's your favorite sienne? Would you rather be an otokoyaku or a musumeyaku?

MORE IMPORTANTLY, if 'zuka were going to put on a Sherlock musical what would the songs be about???

Re: Kiyoku Tadashiku Utsukushiku

Opening up the love to all non-English musicals, because while 'zuka remains my first and greatest love, I'm rather fond of German, French, and Hungarian musicals as well <3

goddammit!

Don't Look At Me, I'm Hideous!

(Anonymous)
I've always loved/crushed on Sherlock Holmes and I LOVED the BBCSherlock version. Even more than the Granada series.

I also love a good fandom wank. So when I heard about the recent discussions about posting photographs online of Benedict Cumberbatch taken at the stage door after a performance, I hightailed it over to the sites to read.

The issue seems to be BC not wanting photos posted online because he looks tired, something along the lines of

'Hey everyone! I took a picture of Benedict please don't post it online because I don't look good right now and I respect the man and his art too much to post it but I have it.'

'OHNO, WHY DID YOU EVEN TAKE IT, YOU ARE NOT A TRUE FAN! HE DIDN'T WANT PHOTOS, YOU MADE HIM!'

'NO I DIDN'T BUT HE ASKED ME NOT TO POST IT ONLINE BECAUSE HE DOESN'T LOOK PRETTY.'

Now, if I was a celebrity I'm sure I'd be too lazy/not interested in even going out the stage door to meet, greet fans, give autographs, etc. So it's nice BC bothers to do this.

And I certainly think a request to not take a photograph or ask that a photograph not be posted online should be respected.

Don't know why the people who took the illicit photo would tantalize people ala "I have photo but can't show you, sorry!" but that's another post.

But...doesn't it seem kind of vainglorious, silly for someone, especially a man, (I KNOW, HOW SEXIST OF ME! INGRAINED BELIEFS ARE HARD TO BREAK!) to worry about that sort of thing?

'Oh, I look awful! Don't show anyone!'

Is it the price of fame? Vanity, thy name is celebrity?

Re: Don't Look At Me, I'm Hideous!

(Anonymous)
No, it doesn't? I hate it when any of my friends post pictures of me online looking not my best. It must be even worse if you know those photos are going to be circulated amongst hundreds of people. Actors have feelings too!

What are the most popular fics at the moment?

(Anonymous)
So, I'm new to this fandom (which seems incredibly lovely! ♥) and totally spoiled because my other fandom has a twitter which follows WIPS, making it really easy to find the good fic on the kink meme, even if you're a lurker and don't really know anyone.

I've found the really well known stuff through delicious but I'm finding the thought of looking through all the fills on here pretty daunting, and I like following wips in spite of the soul crushing waiting. Which are the fics that everyone is reading at the moment? OP enjoys John/Sherlock but is willing to try other pairings if you think it's worth reading. :)

Re: What are the most popular fics at the moment?

(Anonymous)
It's really hard to tell what you consider worth reading. I mean, for me "worth reading" means Mycroft topping the hell out of John. I'm not looking for literature. Just Mycroft softly telling John to be a good boy and follow orders if he knows what's best for him.

But I suppose you could have luck looking at the delicious archive and simply clicking on the fics that a lot of people have saved. That's a pretty honest assessment of what fandom in general likes, even though my personal favorites don't have a ton a saves.
