This is a place for all sorts of off-topic discussion.

You can post anon or un-anon, per your personal preference, as usual.

All I ask is that you stay civil and (hopefully) friendly.

If you also want to use this thread to try to find a beta for a fic, or ask a brit-pick-ish question, I think that would be an acceptable use. Have fun!

Trigger warning: self harm

A question for any past or current self harmers (or anyone else with an opinion):

What do you do when all you can think about is creating new scars, but you don't want to worry your loved ones? Living vicariously through self harm fic isn't doing the trick, this evening.

I'm so miserable, you guys. I'm fucking 26 years old and nothing's getting better. I thought it was supposed to get better.

I'm sorry.

Not helpful, but honest

Ok, I'm asexual but usually I have no problem with smut or anything in fic. I don't actively seek it out but if it's there I don't mind, and I will often read PWP if it's got an interesting character element to it. I'm not antisex IRL either, just don't need to know all the explicit details of my friends' love lives.

But sometimes, just sometimes, without warning at all, any reference to sex will totally freak me out. Even just reading about someone getting hard will have me curling up in a ball and pulling at my hair or digging my nails into my arms. Last night, I was really enjoying a fic and suddenly I had to crawl under my desk and get a friend to talk me down.

I've never had a seriously traumatic sexual event, although I had a bad experience. I don't get like this when friends talk to me about sex, and I have no idea when it'll come on or how long it'll last (I'm still edgy after two days)

Does anyone have any advice for how to help/stop/notice what triggers this mood? I am totally clueless.

Trigger Warning

This comment may be triggering.

The thing about triggers is that they're not necessarily obvious or rational. Going into TMI territory here, but I had a minor (not very extreme) experience with a stranger who tried to molest me as a kid.

I read stories about sexual abuse and molestation, especially those that are heavy on the hurt/comfort or revenge. Sometimes I get triggered into flashbacks. One of my triggers is mention of the age of the kid (when s/he's between 10 and 12). Another trigger is the words that might come out of the abuser's mouth. Not so much the exact words but the general tenor of them. If they're coaxing...

Then there's the fact that when it's a stranger, I don't get triggered; but if the abuser is a parental figure, it's more likely. (Which doesn't make sense given my experience, or maybe it does.)

I know people who get triggered by description of a smell or a sound. Triggers can't be predicted. I suppose the only way to figure out your triggers is to look for what the stories have in common. (Maybe link them to a friend?) I'm sorry that I can't be more helpful. :(

I've misplaced a delightful Mystrade fic, and am striking out at finding it on the meme. I think the prompt was something about "inexperienced top, experienced bottom". The plot ran that Mycroft's drive hit Lestrade on his motorcycle, and they got to know each other that way. The part that was memorable to me was that Lestrade had both nipples pierced and it was super hot. Does anyone know what I'm talking about, and could link me? I would be so happy to find it again.

Was it "Impact", by elfbert?

Am I going crazy...?

There's a req that I could have sworn that I saw on part ten, but I've search part ten, the delicious archive, and the filled prompts post back to page 14, about where I joined in, and nothing, so I'm going to throw myself at the mercy of the memers and hope that I'm not oing utterly crazy...
(Yes, I do have a fill for it, that's why.) (^_^)'

John playing Russian Roulette, and Sherlock walking in on him. That's all I remember about it. P_P

It wasn't the one whose summary is below, that's just the one I found on delicious, and I wasn't that one.

In ACD!canon, Watson has a gambling problem. In the BBCverse, he's addicted to the thrill and danger of war. Combine these two, and what do you get?

Russian roulette.

(Oh dear, a 5+1 almost writes itself, doesn't it.)

Did the req get deleted because this one already exists? If so, am I allowed to re-req it (though in a prompt freeze) and then post the fill for the OP!non? What is the protocal in situations like this?

Re: Am I going crazy...?

Reqs aren't deleted just because there's a fill with the same elements, so if it was requested, the only way it might have disappeared is if it was a logged-in comment the poster deleted, or it was posted during a freeze and a mod deleted it. I don't remember that prompt (only other Russian Roulette prompt besides the quoted one I remember is Sherlock and Moriarty playing it) but I haven't read every single prompt.

You can reprompt to fill, but the mods want fills posted to original threads if the post hasn't hit 10,000 comments. The OP may have that thread tracked or bookmarked, too.

I have to stop participating in or reading the meme. Even on a freeze it's still too much to keep up with, and it's been effecting my RL. I have a fill or two I'm working on that I will post and link eventually, but right now I need to back away from the meme or there will be further very serious RL consequences.

I'm not an author with any meme wips, so don't worry about any you are following being abandoned because of me. I don't even know why I'm posting this or why I think anyone would notice if I just disappeared.

Never mind. Carry on.

Mycroft says 'don't milass'. I'll miss you too, Mycroft.

This picture brings me great joy and I must share it.

I've seen the pic before and loved it, but the added caption makes it hysterical. Thank you, anon!

Fuckity Fuck

I think I'm filling about five or six prompts as an anon right now only I seem to have four bookmarks for "filling".

This is a problem because I have NO IDEA where the other two were. (And the OPs were super excited that I was filling too.)

Re: Fuckity Fuck

Do you know what part the fill is from? If so, go to the 'filled prompts' post and look through the single sentence discription of the prompts...might find it that way.

Iconned meme quotes. Apologies for the annoying layout. If you hit reply to, you should be able to see them all without clicking each one.

Won't be doing any more of these for a while. If someone else wants to take up the torch of answering calls for quote icons on the meme, please do.

Baker Street

So I am writing a fill that takes place in 221b. I've been going through my copy of the DVDs to try and get the layout of the flat, but I'm really not very good at this sort of thing; does anyone know where I can find... God, I don't know. Blueprints. Blueprints of Sherlock BBC 221b Baker Street would be fantastic.

Has anyone out there figured out the layout of 221b? And if you have, would you be willing to share? It's not terribly important but I like getting my details right, so it's bugging me that I can't figure this out.

Anderson with a dinosaur pattered tie or socks. Pleeease.

It doesn't have to be obvious, just there.

I mean, you made Jim wear a skull tie and Mycroft wear an umbrella tie. This small little detail would make the fandom explode because it'd be proof you follow the fandom to some degree.

If I had Twitter I would tweet this to Gatiss. XD

Hmmm, personally I'd be really uneasy knowing that anyone involved in making the series is following the fandom. I just really think the two things shouldn't mix and I hate it when shows break the fourth wall. It's a bit of a thrill, I guess, but in an "oooh, creepy!" kind of way.

Maybe I'm in the minority on this, IDK.

I haven't read through ACD canon in a long while, so I have to ask: Is it canon that Holmes's violin is a Strad, or are people just calling it that because that's the famous one?

It's canon. In "The Carboard Box" it says: We had a pleasant little meal together, during which Holmes would talk about nothing but violins, narrating with great exultation how he had purchased his own Stradivarius, which was worth at least five hundred guineas, at a Jew broker's in Tottenham Court Road for fifty-five shillings.

Brit-pick question

We all know Sherlock uses nicotine patches because it's "impossible to sustain a smoking habit in London."

But my friend and I are marathoning State of Play, which is only 8 years old, and everyone smokes everywhere. Am I missing a massive shift in attitudes? Was it a bit of licence to make everything seem grittier? I can only go by Canada, where indoor smoking bans started in the eaerly nineties.

Re: Brit-pick question

Smoking bans came in to force in England in 2007, so there would be a lot more smoking in an eight year old show.

What is Sally Donovan's rank in Scotland Yard?
Much thanks in advance.

Re: Question

Anon says: Detective Sergeant.

She's definitely a sergeant and, unless I am misunderstanding, must also be a detective because she's in plain clothes.

What's the etiquette on posting fills from previous pages?

Obviously, there is no one answer to this, but what are people's thoughts/opinions on where someone should post fills from old prompt pages?

If you fill something from I, III, or very soon V, obviously you'll have to post your fill in the current prompt post. But what about things from II, IV, VI, etc.? On the one hand, you want people tracking that prompt to be able to find it. On the other hand, the greedy part of me that wants comments like an unholy creature of the night thinks that a lot more people would notice a fill on the current prompt post.

A possible solution is to post to the current post, and then post a link on the original prompt. Do people find this reasonable or annoying? Is this more acceptable for fills on older prompt posts (say, II) than on newer ones (VIII or IX)? I did see that someone got chastised for filling something from IX on X. Where would you draw this line? I am curious to see what various people in the community think.

Re: What's the etiquette on posting fills from previous pages?

I'm with the mods on this.

If there are fewer than 200 comments left on the original part (meaning comments were over 9,800) I would post to a new part, but also leave a comment with a link on the old part, for those tracking it.

Anything being posted on a new part when there is still space on the original part is just taking up comments on the new part for no reason, IMO. People track prompts they're interested in, and they check the filled prompts post - or I do, at least. That's the way the meme is designed to work. If everyone posted all new fills to the newest parts we'd get through parts/freezes faster than ever, and old posts wouldn't fill. That's not how the meme is designed to work. Create a sockpuppet and post to one of the big fic/general comms if you're that desperate for feedback - you'll get more there than here.

That's a longwinded way of saying I would find it very annoying!

But perhaps other people may hold totally different views, and will wow me with their logic, and I'll adjust my stance on it...

(Mycroft says "Wrong isnow". Does that mean he agrees with you or me??)

I'm writing a story featuring John's friends and fellow soldiers from the Army. Today I passed it to a friend, and they responded that his friends sound "very Yank," and I am actually spazzing out now because EVERYONE IS SO YANK AND THERE ARE AMERICANISMS EVERYWHERE. And I can probably get away with making one of the characters American, but I can't do that for all of his friends, so I'm wondering if anyone could help me out Britpicking some dialogue? I'm not quite done with the whole fic yet, but the parts featuring the OCs are mostly finished, and I can just Google-Doc it at you.

HELP ME I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO ABOUT THIS. ;A; I love the dialogue I've written so far, but it's really obviously based off depictions I've seen of the American military, so . . . WAUGH.

Sweet thing, don't panic, I said I'd look it over for you ;)
