This is a place for all sorts of off-topic discussion.

You can post anon or un-anon, per your personal preference, as usual.

All I ask is that you stay civil and (hopefully) friendly.

If you also want to use this thread to try to find a beta for a fic, or ask a brit-pick-ish question, I think that would be an acceptable use. Have fun!

I've never understood why anyone would stay in an abusive relationship...

Today I realised I'm in one.

Fuck, do I feel stupid. And utterly, utterly terrified.

Tell your friends. It's amazing how much the good ones will support you, even if you aren't able to get out of the relationship right now. Let them help.

What would be the British equivalent of "Threw me for a loop?" (Does that even make sense to anyone outside the US?)

Knocked me for six, probably. It's a cricket term and I use it a lot.

Looking for more role-players! [UPDATED]

Hi!
I'm looking for some role players for a group on Facebook for BBC's Sherlock.

We already have a Sherlock, a John, a Mycroft, an Anthea and a Mrs Hudson, but we're currently looking for other players to play even the smallest of characters. We're pretty desperate, actually. It seems finding quality role players on Facebook is almost impossible if you don't know where to look.

We're not extremely picky. At this rate, we'll take what we can get.
All we request is that you are familiar with the character you're interested in playing, are capable of using spell-check and can just keep up in general. When we're bored, we play around with modernizing some of the original ACD stories, so if you're familiar with those that would be useful too, but not mandatory.

If any of this is piquing your interest, here are the profiles we have to far:
Sherlock: http://www.facebook.com/SherlockHolmesbbc/
John: http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001611080121#!/profile.php?id=100001611080121
Mycroft: http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001611080121#!/profile.php?id=100001449027373
Anthea: http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001611080121#!/profile.php?id=100001981035435
Mrs. Hudson: http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001611080121#!/profile.php?id=100001353538924

Please! Don't be shy. We're genuinely excited for anyone who would like to try. If you know someone else who might like be interested, then send them over! Just send me a message and a little sample of some of your writing and/or past role-playing experiences. Links are always appreciated.
It's just a precaution; We want to be sure you can keep up.

Cheers!

Simple brit-pick

(Anonymous)
A character was going to say "You weren't exactly chatty about it yourself" as a somewhat mocking/affectionate response to a revelation.

What would be the proper word to use instead of 'chatty'? Would chatty be used?

Thank you in advance

Re: Simple brit-pick

(Anonymous)
You could say chatty. If it's a more proper character, such as Sherlock, I guess "vocal" would be better.

I'm drowning!

(Anonymous)
There are too many fantastic Sherlock/Lestrade prompts! I don't know which one to fill first! I'll be writing one, and then another will sneak into the same story, and then a third, and then I'll have to go back to make it gen, and then I decided to make the gen one a different story, but then oh, there's Sherlock being good with Lestrade's kids and OH MY GOD THIS STORY WILL NEVER BE DONE. AND IF IT IS EVER DONE IT WILL BE A TERRIBLE MESS AND I WON'T KNOW WHICH PROMPT TO POST IT UNDER.

I LOVE YOU.

(Sherlock/Lestrade is my OTP and there are never enough fic of them out there)

Question about John

(Anonymous)
Were we ever informed(not fan lore/trope) as to where John went to medical school?

Re: Question about John

Well, he went to school with whatshisface at "Barts" which is "a bit different from [his] day" so I would guess there.

Brit-pick Question

(Anonymous)
Does New Scotland Yard have interrogation rooms? If so, are they the basic small room with table, chairs and mirrors set up?

OR, alternatively, are there rooms in NSY for children? A waiting room or something? I'm writing a scene where Lestrade has to take his daughter to work with him and I'm trying to think where to put her...

Re: Brit-pick Question

(Anonymous)
They must do. Interview rooms, waiting areas, lunchrooms etc. Fairly standard in most major policing operations world-wide these days, I should think. Don't know that there'd be specific children's room though.

Thank you!

(Anonymous)
I just wanted to say thank you to the people here that have helped me. I have asked several brit-pick questions and they were all answered.

My fiction has already been given many positive reviews. I was a bit shocked to be honest, as it is my first Sherlock fic.

You all gave me the confidence to post something that was entirely new to me.

The only thing I did that might upset some was that I used Americanized spelling and punctuation because I was not confident I'd always remember to use Anglicized alternatives in a comment fic. If I ever post to my LJ ot will change. I know that much debate abounds about this so, I hope it was not too great an offense.

Thank you again to those that helped.

Anon author.

Person who helps with britpicks here

(Anonymous)
Oh, anon, if anyone is actually offended by American spelling then I will poke them in the eye with a rusty spoon.

Yes, things like Americanisms in speech or cultural mistakes can be jarring, but people silly enough to be bothered by z instead of s or an absence of u should just get off the main meme and stay on the rant post where they can be angry away from such nice people like you seem to be.

I am always willing to help out and you should feel free to ask more questions on the chatter. I'll try to be as polite and informative as I can :)

This is stupid. I'm having an incredibly hard time right now coping with everyday bullshit of no real consequence and I need a cup of tea and a cuddle.

Does anyone have any recs or prompt pimping that might do in lieu of actual snuggles which are entirely unavailable to me?

Well if you want h/c s/j first time fic...try this:

S/J suicidal john, comfort from sherlock: http://caffienekitty.livejournal.com/325797.html

Johns birthday. Everyone forgets...except for mycroft: http://sherlockbbc-fic.livejournal.com/5950.html?thread=24573246#t24573246

Mycroft cares for John: http://sherlockbbc-fic.livejournal.com/5950.html?thread=24290110#t24290110

Thats what I recommend. However, as you can see I like john h/c.

The first one is really good because it still has john being very caring and careful. So far the first time is beautiful.

The second is short and sweet and quiet.

The third is tender and very spare.

I'm putting out some feelers to see if anyone would be interested in a new gen comm for all things Sherlock, with a more relaxed style of moderating than sherlockbbc. If you're interested, could you PM <"lj user="Diaktoros">?

Brit culture question:

Are flats generally rented by the week or the month? Do people talk about a weekly rate or a monthly rate?

Re: Brit culture question:

(Anonymous)
Have you tried here? http://www.easylondonaccommodation.com/

Why is it so hard to find things with Anderson's actor in it?

I saw him in a musical in London ages ago, and he does voice overs and is a painter. So you're more likely to see him on stage or in a gallery than see him in a movie. Or maybe hear him in a video game or a documentary.

He does so many things, he's awesome like that.

Possible Triggers for Suicide

(Anonymous)
Save me, Obi Wan Kenobi Discussion/Chatter Post! You're my only hope!

OK, so I have this scene I'm trying to write, but UK gun laws are causing me problems, so I need to find a way to adapt it. Say, there is a wealthy, well-respected member of society, who has just been found out for having done illegal/embezzling-type things. He is in his big, expensive home, and the police are pulling up outside to arrest him, and - before they can - he puts a gun in his mouth and kills himself. Yay, cliche, you are in so many movies and you are awesome. Only! With UK's gun laws, I'm kind of doubting a person in this position would have a gun in his office in the first place? So how could he commit suicide in a thoroughly dramatic way for this fic? I debated having him throw himself out the window, but I need him dead, dead, DEAD for plot reasons, so I doubt a 2nd/3rd-story window would be definitive enough for him. And I know knife wounds can take forever (and might fail entirely if you suck at anatomy), and who keeps poison around, and...

HELP!

I swear, I am tempted to just make him an American with an illegal gun at this point, because my brain has been stuck on this stupid plot point for a week now. D:

Re: Possible Triggers for Suicide

....Well... If this man really is as "wealthy" ans "well-respected" as you say, but he still has done some illegal things, maybe he travels a bit to America? And while there he could, consievably, bring home a weapon (pre 9/11) or something of that ilk.

After all, if what he's doing is so illegal, maybe he does have a smuggled in gun? John has one, after all. ^_^
