This is a place for all sorts of off-topic discussion.

You can post anon or un-anon, per your personal preference, as usual.

All I ask is that you stay civil and (hopefully) friendly.

If you also want to use this thread to try to find a beta for a fic, or ask a brit-pick-ish question, I think that would be an acceptable use. Have fun!

Warning: Non-con/dub-con

Thank God for anonymity, right? So I think I'm really twisted. The power dynamics in non-con/dub-con fics really hit a kink for me, but I'm not really into the 'anonymous kidnappers' scenario and prefer it when it's the canon characters/pairing in question, like S/J. I know that it takes them out of character to varying degrees depending on the author, but I recently read the hypnosis fill and am suddenly desperate for more along those lines. It's so wrong, but I can't help wanting more of Sherlock or John taking advantage/abusing each other's trust.

Which is my long-winded way of asking if anyone has any recs?

What happend to our main mod jjgd? It seems that the account has been deleted. What happend?

No one knows, AFAIK.

Watson, you dog!

Assyriologists unite!

Hey, so, um. I saw the Classics thread a ways back, and wanted to know if there were any Assyriology fans out there.

I keep waiting for someone to fill my Sherlock-as-Gilgamesh prompt back in VIII, I think it was...

SO.
Have any of you seen good exhibits lately, have books you'd reccommend for a newbie in the field?

Answer me seriously now...

(Anonymous)
Do any of you have a Sherlock OC? Don't lie, we're all friends here!

I'll tell you about mine, but she was made a long time ago and not for BBC!Verse. I haven't thought about her since I was a geeky preteen! Her home is in book!verse because she was created a while before the '09 movie.

Let's see if I remember this correctly (I can't recall her name)...she was an ex con-artist who helped Holmes and Watson every once in a while with her old connections to the underground. She was not a love interest for any character (this was back when I read Mary Sue fics, so I was like screw that my character is nothing like those ones!)

Actually her personality was similar to that of the '09 movie's Irene Adler (besides the Holmes lovin), so watching the movie was like a flashback to my younger, sillier days.

On a connecting note, what do you all think about Irene Adler being in Season 2? I REALLY hope they do her justice.

Re: Answer me seriously now...

(Anonymous)
I freaking...Ugh, with the Irene Adler. I have no idea what everyone seems to see in her, because frankly, she's not that awesome. She didn't outsmart Holmes, and it wouldn't take a genius to figure out that someone threw a smoke bomb into your house once it turned out that nothing was actually on fire. She was smart enough to realize she had given her secret hiding spot away, after someone watched her go there. That's not impressive. If Moffat and Gattiss can make it happen, then good for them, but I'm not holding my breath, and I won't be squealing with glee if and when she makes an appearance. I've already had enough of her.

(nothing against you, anon. I understand why people want to see her, I just don't agree.)

Because I'm lazy, and trying to read legal stuff always makes my mind blur...

What is Australia's stance on 'fic regarding underage folks?

Is it dependant on how explicit the text is or is it any reference to underage people participating in sexual acts, and what is the age limit in regards to what is considered 'child'?

Basically, I've always taken a 'well, fuck it' approach to the whole thing, but back-reading the threads has reminded me and gotten me curious. And, yeah, okay, maybe a tad worried, because, actually, what is going with that filter business?

This is what happens when I leave facebook. Apparently that's where I used to get all my up-to-date news from...

Australia is trying to filter the Internet. Not trolling, I'm being serious. They want to screen content for things they deem "the public should not see." What shits me is that Australians might not even get to see the blacklist. The government just want to block shit with a smile and think we'd not react.

Their main goal is to stop pedophiles from accessing child pornography--a decent enough goal, but studies have proven that the firewall they're planning on using is easily hackable. Also, there are predictions that the Internet speed--already painfully slow in Australia--will lag more. Especially sites like YouTube and Facebook where there's a lot more content to filter.

Also, there are things the government might want to block on top of the pornography. This is where I get concerned. Since we can't see the blacklist, how do we know what's being blocked? Where will the government draw the line at what we can and can't see? I've always thought we were a free country.

I haven't heard much about what they're going to do from here--the idea started a year or two ago--but from what I can see it's still planned to go.

Thankfully, I would think LiveJournal and Fanfiction.net and other fic hosting sites would pass under the radar.

Opinions you daren't voice to the fandom at large

(Anonymous)
Note: not a rant thread! Just an unpopular opinions thread. Be excellent to each other.

Mine:

I don't care for the character of Irene Adler in ACD!canon, but I fucking love her in the '09 movie. (This may partially have to do with Rachel McAdams running around in Victorian men's clothing. Oh god, the hotness.)

I also just don't care about BBC!Lestrade or Moriarty at all. It's not that I hate them, they're just so uninteresting to me. I can't pinpoint why, either. I tend to skip any fic with them as a prominent role (outside their canon roles, that is).

So, what things about the canon or the fandom do you feel strongly about, despite nearly everyone disagreeing with you? Maybe you'll even find some like-minded people, who knows?

Re: Opinions you daren't voice to the fandom at large

(Anonymous)
I don't care about Moriarty either. He's too over the top for my taste, and I'd much rather see Sherlock or Mycroft do something...questionable. :D

I don't ship Sherlock/John, but I'm used to not shipping the main pairing-- Mainly, I think, that's because the main pairing tends to be about romance, and I'm not interested in that at all. I prefer my porn to be about desperate one-night-stands. *is ashamed*

I DO ship Sherlock/Mycroft. *is even more ashamed*

Anyhow, I love this fandom. It's a lot more accepting than I'm used to. ;)

Anon is supposed to write an essay on this (http://www.spectator.co.uk/essays/all/6439693/common-people.thtml).

English is a foreign language to me so writing about newspaper articles is a common excercise.

However:
I don't know what to say but What utter bullshit..

Help?

Sorry, that entire article reeks of "Back in my day..."-ism.

This (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cultural_cringe%22) might be a helpful concept to highlight in your essay considering the author's obsession with how the French are clearly practically perfect in every way.

I feel really stupid for asking this, but: Is it actually canon that Lestrade's separated from his wife (either because she's dead or a divorce)? Is there any reason to think he's not happily married? If there is, I totally missed it. I can't tell if this is canon or just a pervasive fanon thing, and now I am hopelessly confused.

HELP!

No reason at all. It just makes it easier to hook him up with someone else in fic if he's divorced, and gives him a sad backstory as well if she's dead. :D

That said, divorce is extremely common for cops, and Lestrade does seem to be the "married-to-the-job" type that would neglect his marriage, completely without meaning to...

But then he also seems to be the type to have three kids and a couple of dogs and go roughhousing with them all at the end of a long day before disappearing upstairs to thoroughly shag his wife...so who knows. :D

dear anons (and non anons), where can I find a bigger version of this? I found it randomly on Google

This is the best that I could find with some quick Google Fu:

I'd have gone ahead and put them in the comment, but they're quite large. I couldn't find a full version of the middle picture. :(

Would it last?

(Anonymous)
The one thing I find truly heartbreaking about ACD!canon is that Holmes and Watson pretty much lose contact after Holmes retires to the Sussex Downs. Holmes's would-be ending at the Reichenbach Falls was supposed to be tragic, but somehow I find the ending he got even more striking... I don't know, I just have this image in my head; a lonely Holmes, keeping his bees...

Now I'm wondering... 21st Century Sherlock and John, will they last? If you ship them, would a relationship, possibly a marriage, change anyhing?

Maybe I'm just too fond of silent drama, but I can't see it. I see John with a couple of unlucky marriages, and Sherlock alone, more or less. Occasionally, I read fluffy fic, and suddenly I'm all 'oh noes, lonely beekeeper! D:'

What about you?

In my head!canon, they last. It may not be a smooth, happy road but I like to imagine that, when all is said and done, they are together in Sussex, Sherlock with his bees and John with a nice collection of souvenir teapots. Maybe kids from one of his marriages come by to visit, maybe not. And Gladstone has a little headstone near the bees (because dogs can't live forever, no matter how much we'd like for them to do so).

Why does pretty much every actor who ever played Holmes have an annoyingly sexy voice? And why do I have a voice kink? I'm supposed to get some work done. :D

I just told someone I was thinking about filling their prompt. I haven't written for a long time, and I wasn't a genius writer to begin with, but the prompt looked fun and I thought it was worth a shot.
They replied very excited. And. Um. I'M REALLY TERRIFIED
SOMEONE TELL ME I'M NOT GOING TO DIE, PLEASE

There, there, anon. You're not going to die. Just try to focus on the fun of writing it.

Is anyone else bothered by all these references to 'Mrs. Turner's married ones' cropping up here and there? Like, what are they, biological specimens? It's rather an odd way to refer to people...Am I just missing something?

We like to quote the series and it´s the way Mrs. Hudson refered to them in ASIP.
