This is a place for all sorts of off-topic discussion.

You can post anon or un-anon, per your personal preference, as usual.

All I ask is that you stay civil and (hopefully) friendly.

If you also want to use this thread to try to find a beta for a fic, or ask a brit-pick-ish question, I think that would be an acceptable use. Have fun!

Looking for recs?

(Anonymous)
So, I'm a huge sucker for unexperienced!Sherlock pining for John, and being really nervous and insecure about the way he feels, or even resigning himself to the assumption that John will never feel the same way ...Only to be reassured/comforted by John and discover that his feelings are, in fact, returned. Anyone know of some good fics of this nature?

Re: Looking for recs?

(Anonymous)
I know there are more and better, but this is a short photo!fic that is super cute and I thought you might like (:

How popular is Lady Gaga in England? (^_^);

I'm looking for a dialogue-only joke-fill. The prompt was something about John and Sherlock doing coke and having intoxicated sex, so anon wroke a fill describing what coke did to your sex drive.

Anybody have a link?

I know which one you mean ("Work, you bastard!") but I can't find a link either after an hour searching the delicious, sorry. I know it's in there, but not apparently under the obvious tags.

Convince me that Mystrade is Amazing

(Anonymous)
So usually in fandom I ship every pairing that ever was, even the ones that end up in horrible shipping wars and the ridiculously obscure ones. But I just don't understand Mystrade in the least :(

I believe there is still hope.

I (pretty pretty please) need you lovely people to rec me the fic that got you shipping everyone's favorite disgruntled DI with everyone's favorite umbrella-wielding Holmes and show me the error of my ways! :D I want fics that, in your humble opinion, define what Mystrade is all about.

Re: Convince me that Mystrade is Amazing

(Anonymous)
Dude, I totally understand the impulse, but sometimes a pairing just won't click for you no matter how great the story is. Consider yourself lucky, you like a lot of pairings and you'll never hurt for fic. I'm in the same boat, I love to read far and wide and I'll give just about any pairing a try, but that said, some pairing just hit my happy spots better than others. Some pairings I just get bored of a lot faster than others.

Feeling Unqualified to Write

(Anonymous)
I haven't written a fill yet-- haven't written much of or shared any non-original fic in *years*.

Am feeling very tempted to take on a prompt. Problem is, it's fluffy kidfic involving either fostering or adoption, both of which I'm unsure as to the UK laws on, and teens. I'm nervous about my ability to portray quite a bit of it-- the requested characterization of the main character (wording of prompt suggests a fondness for sports and possibly fights) and the probable foster child in question (age five and probably nursing some unaddressed psychological trauma).

No other writers seem interested in it yet. Should I dredge up my courage and go for it? Any encouragement/tips?

Really would like to contribute to this, and the prompt is one of those that sparked ideas as soon as I saw it.

Re: Feeling Unqualified to Write

Do it!

This is a anon fic meme, not a dissertation, you don't have to stress that much about it. If you get the details wrong, you'll be just like 90 percent of the rest of us who have flubbed on one score or another. We are more interested in reading a cute story about kids than we are learning about the intricacies of the fostering system.

So relax, and give it a spin!

So I'm not entirely sure why, but I always thought if we gave BBC!John a mustache, it'd end up tragically horrible. Looking at these pictures though, he'd still look pretty adorable!

Oh, Martin, honey, I hate to say it, but... Not your best look.

Flat view works well for this, if you lose another comment.

What color are Mycroft's eyes? I'd pull up screencaps, but I'm in class.

Blue. Mark Gatiss has very blue eyes.

I was wondering if anyone else ever felt...put out by all the despair that goes on for Molly Hooper? Like, why is it not okay that she's timid and has a crush on Sherlock Holmes? I'll admit that I cringed when she was used to introduce Moriarty in TGG, but for the most part...why can't she be loved for who she is, even if she's not a pinnacle of feminine fortitude? I mean, she works in the morgue. Doesn't that count for something?

This. She's an awesome character and I'm realising that in high school I wanted to be her, even without the Sherlock connection. It is obvious Sherlock is manipulating her to get access to the morgue, but he'd find a way to do the same thing to anyone in that position, male, female or otherwise.

Um, I can't find the prompt I was filling.
It was something along the lines of "John goes out and leaves a note telling Sherlock where he's gone with a scribble. Sherloak seduces the scribble."

Can someone link me to it? I think it might have been in part ix...
But thanks anyway. :)

"seduces the scribble"

lol.

If anyone could, it would be him.

(Sorry, I remember the prompt but have no idea where it is.)

I'm not entirely versed on the BBC Sherlock canon and have had an urgent need to reread the books for a little while, so could I get some explanation on things I've seen around the meme and the fandom in general.

Can't remember everything I wanted to ask, but for now will settle on these two questions:

1. Where is fandom getting Victor Trevor? Most mentions smack of book-canon origins, but fandom can be very misleading.

2. Where did the 'three continents' thing originate?

I'm not sure about Victor Trevor (I'm horrible with names), but three continents is from the books. John brags that he's known women on three continents, and therefore he's got lady killer cred.

DEAREST FANDOM:

John/Sherlock. Who tops and who bottoms, why or why not?

Discuss.

PS: This is not in any way meant to be taken seriously. I understand the world is not merely divided into tops and bottoms, etc etc. I just wanted to see what y'all would come up with.

John bottoms. Why? Because Sherlock's so friggen skinny, ergo he's light, ergo if John topped (and he's stocky), he would crush him. (^___^)

/yeah, I got nothing. (^_^);

(Anonymous)
... anyone care to join me for a game of TMI? :D

What's your weirdest kink, and what's your weirdest squick?

Re: I think I'm a bit tipsy

(Anonymous)
Weirdest kink: Bromances. Seriously. It's not that I *mind* romance per se, I just like reading stories where the male leads are being bromantic more.

Weirdest squick: Sex. Reading it, pictures of it, hearing about it. It just grosses me out. (^_^);

Luckily this is one of the few kink memes for fandoms I like that are tolerant of that, with people willing to fill fics that don't have explicit sexual content. ILU GUYS!

Semi-Britpicking/City Living and Driving Question

(Anonymous)
Curious for writing reasons. I have lived in the midsouthern United States for most of my life. In my area, most begin learning to drive sometime before being through with puberty (sometimes before starting, depending on their residential circumstances). Getting one's probationary license and first car as well as passing the driver's test for a full license is like some odd mix of coming of age ritual and business as usual. No wonder, because unless you live in town you'd be walking at least an hour for a grocery run over lots of sharp hills and stretches of highway when it'd be less than half that time round trip with a vehicle. The public transport system here is abysmal, and it's also highly disused.

So for a sort-of-average family living in/near London (am thinking near would be more likely) with mostly comfortable income so long as they're budgeting carefully, what kind of area would they live in? Would a child in such a family be more likely to use a combination of walking and public transportation than to drive themselves, and if they did drive, at what age would they probably begin? What form of public transportation would be most commonly used?

Writing in city settings isn't exactly easy when you're used to a rural area, even if it's diverse and not exactly isolated. Doesn't help that enough time anywhere louder and denser than, say, Nashville has been known to be very bad for my state of mind and ability to not curl up in a little ball in a corner.

Re: Semi-Britpicking/City Living and Driving Question

(Anonymous)
It sounds as if they'd be living in a suburb, or a dormitory town, depending on hw far out of central London you want them - but I don't live in that part of the country so can't help any more than that.

The legal driving age in the UK is 17. You can get a provisional licence at that age, which means that you can drive if accompanied by a qualified driver aged 21 or over. There's a bit more info at http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/LearnerAndNewDrivers/LearningToDriveOrRide/DG_4022661. Learning to drive at 17 is becoming more common, I think. Twenty-five years ago, only one or two of my friends were learning to drive at that age, more people I know that age now seem to be driving. But it's still quite common to leave it a few years, especially in areas where there's good public transport, or plenty of local facilities.

People are much less likely to get their own car at that age, unless their parents are reasonably well off, or unless they've been saving for quite a while.

Public transport around the London suburbs is pretty good - or at least better than it is away from the cities - so a combination of the parental taxi service, walking, buses and possibly the tube to get around.
