This is a place for all sorts of off-topic discussion.

You can post anon or un-anon, per your personal preference, as usual.

All I ask is that you stay civil and (hopefully) friendly.

If you also want to use this thread to try to find a beta for a fic, or ask a brit-pick-ish question, I think that would be an acceptable use. Have fun!

I'm reading a fic atm. It's brillaint, terrific writing, nice plot. Great, really.

The only thing that bugs me is that in Mycroft's POV, Mycroft is called Holmes. I still enjoy the fic, it really isn't annoying or anything but it makes me wince every once in a while.

Funny enough, in Lestrade's POV it's Lestrade and that's perfectly fine with me. Here, I'd be put off by Greg or Gregory instead.

Why is that? I am so confused. Is it the same for you?

Re: Last Names

(Anonymous)
I generally like calling everyone by surname in the narrative. But that becomes impossible if both Mycroft and Sherlock turn up...so then I find myself doing odd splits, so it's Sherlock and Mycroft, but Watson and Lestrade...because I feel sorry for Lestrade if he's the only one being referred to by surname, but it feels so wrong calling him anything else!

I think it all depends on how people came to Sherlock Holmes though - via books or other series. I came via the books, so don't flinch at all at them being called Holmes and Watson. But I can see how people who only know the Sherlock universe prefer it to be Sherlock and John.

As long as it's consistent within a fic, I don't mind what they're called. I do find it very annoying when it flip flops within the one story though. :)

(and feel free to link to any brilliant fic involving Mycroft and Lestrade...) ;)

I just got sucked in to TvTropes for over three hours. I was just trying to figure out what the definition for Metafiction was after reading this awesome fic . I ended up reading about the infamous My Immortal HP fiction and laughing my ass off listening to the Dramatic reading of it on Youtube.

Anyone else read some truly horrifying fics Lately? Sherlock or otherwise?

Only my own. :P

Round Robin style kink?

Is there any rules against posting a round robin style fic as a req? Say I have an idea for a 5+1, but I can't make it work past the first chapter even though I know what I'm looking for, could I post that first chapter, and see if anyone else wants to add to it?

I mean, if they want to...

Sounds like fun. I'd say post.

First names: "Sherlock" and "Mycroft"

(Anonymous)
All that title and name discussion reminded me of something that I've meant to ask for some time now:

The names "Sherlock" and "Mycroft". Please explain to a non-Brit/non-English native speaker without the respective social and cultural background what's so special or strange about these names.

I've read numerous times in fics remarks like "Parents who call their kids Sherlock and Mycroft probably also [torture fluffy bunnies or some other abhorrence]". So what is so "bad" about these names? I get it that they are very rare (I've never encountered someone called Sherlock or Mycroft anywhere else) but apart from that?

Do they make you think something like "Someone called Sherlock must be a 80 year old farmer from Devon who goes to church every Sunday and hasn't changed his haircut in five decades" or "I bet their parents are on the dole and live in a council estate"? Or what do you associate with these names when you hear them?

Well, the things is that now it's hard for people to seperate the name "Sherlock" from ACD, so if anyone saw a kid w/ that name in "real life" it would be a funny name, and that translates into the 20th century Sherlock* as well. We grew up knowing about ACD (well, sometimes), so we probably wouldn't name our kid "Sherlock"- too much of a joke based off of a fictional character.

Because *we* wouldn't base our kid off of a fictional character, that translates into it being horrible to name Sherlock that, even though the fictional Sherlock doesn't exist in Sherlock.

Through in the fact that it's possible for it to be an old family name, and instant "hilarity" ensues. After all, kids can be cruel to people with funny names, so it would be "torture".

Does that make sense?
Because I'm not always sure I'm capable of explaining my points. ^_^;

*generally speaking, I mean Sherlock and Mycroft. ^_~

So, we had our own little troll today. I replied to one of its comments, and Mycroft gave me KEITH. Yes, in capslock. A little excited, are we, Mycroft.

Obviously, this is a clue, girls. Keith is trolling our meme, but which Keith? Keith Olbermann? Keith Richards? Or did Russell T. Davies get it right, and the Doctor's real name is Keith? Does Mycroft know the Doctor's real name?

I need answers, memers. Help?

That wasn't excitement, that was angst - "KEEEEEEEITH! [Olbermann, nooooo!!]" Mycroft had a little crush, and cannot even articulate the rest of the thought, his abject disappointment at no longer being able to enjoy his "personal time" with Keith via satellite TV.

DEAR BEAUTIFUL IN ALL WAYS PEOPLE OF THE MEME:

Can anyone rec me any fic that has really well-characterised Lestrade in it? I'm having a hankering. It can be gen/het/slash/anything really, I just can't think of anything off the top of my head that will scratch my Lestrade itch.

O SWEET AND WONDROUS MEME-DWELLERS, I THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENERAL AWESOMENESS IN ANY CASE apart from where people are occasionally not nice to people BUT MAINLY YEAH YOU'RE AWESOME

May I Have Your Attention For A Moment, Please?

(Anonymous)
I would like to make an announcement.

In order to jibe with my Mary Sue head fantasy, Sherlock will now retire to a farm on the Sussex Downs in 1903–1904, where he takes up the hobby of bunny keeping as his primary occupation, eventually producing a "Practical Handbook of Bunny Culture, with some Observations upon the Segregation of the Dominant Doe".

He does not raise them 'meat rabbits' as nor endorse the using of bunnies as a human meat or fur product.

This is because I have four house rabbits and Sherlock and I need something in common besides our cheekbones and lounging about in our PJs and silk robes.

Back to business as usual! Thank you.

Anyone up for a Sherlock-themed friending meme? I need some new friends.

*handraise*

i am all for friending memes.

New to this fandom, I hear sherlockbbc is restrictive and the mods are crazy, where should I post any fic/graphics/art that I make?

sherlockbbc mod..er...has her moments. But generally it is a nice comm., quite busy. I've never found it restrictive, but you do have to warn for triggers etc. I've posted stuff there that needs practically every warning under the sun, though.

There are also character comms, though, brother_mine (Mycroft) dilestrade (think you can guess), erm, and look for affiliates on any of the comms, to lead you to other comms!

Depression Question (Triggery?)

(Anonymous)
After the prompt freeze is over, I have a fill to req that involves someone realizing that another person has clinical depression. They recognize it because they have had clinical depression in the past/know someone who did.

My question is this: Is clinical depression something to move on from? Or is it a chronic thing? Could someone be a cop even with that in their background? With clinical depression, is there a state of 'equilibrium' that can be achieved while living with it, or is it possible to eventually heal past it?

I really hope that this is not offensive, as I mean no disrespect, I just don't know how to search for the answer to this properly.

Thank you for your time,
Anon

Re: Depression Question (Triggery?)

(Anonymous)
You´re not being offensive at all. ^^

It´s a chronic disease, but there are ways to deal with it. I didn´t even know I had it until a personal problem triggered a crisis when I was 15. Some people go to therapy and take medicine, but there are other ways to learn to cope. There´s no reason why a depressed person couldn´t be a cop, or part of any other profession.

This page has a good list of facts about the disorder: http://www.emedicinehealth.com/depression/article_em.htm

And if you want to read something more personal and intense, I suggest you Google "depression forum".

Hm, think it would be good to add location in there too so people could possibly meet up if they'd like? I know I for one would really love fandom friends in my area.

TEA!

(Anonymous)
For people in the UK who drink tea, how much is 'normal' to drink in an average day? How much would be considered excessive, and how much would be considered totally insane?

I'm asking because I keep thinking of it like coffee, but it doesn't have the same physical effects as coffee (if I drink more than a litre of coffee in a day I get a bit ragey, and four litres in a day nearly put me in hospital ^^), so I was wondering if there were different sanity levels for tea intake in UK culture.

Re: TEA!

(Anonymous)
That's... a lot of coffee. This American anon drinks no beverage but tea on an average day, and I don't think that's very weird. I don't know how much tea I'd have to imbibe to get the shakes, but it's more than I've ever managed to consume in one day.

Sooooo... where would you advertise for a beta for a sherlock fic if de-anoning is not an option due to shame and embarrassment? Is there such a place?

why not do it here? If you're willing to de-anon enough to pm or if someone's willing to post their email you could find one here.
