This is a place for all sorts of off-topic discussion.

You can post anon or un-anon, per your personal preference, as usual.

All I ask is that you stay civil and (hopefully) friendly.

If you also want to use this thread to try to find a beta for a fic, or ask a brit-pick-ish question, I think that would be an acceptable use. Have fun!

You Don't Know Me But It's Not Like Me To Beg..

(Anonymous)
But I'm begging you all!

More personal Mary Sue/Shelockbbc fantasies! Here's the link, a few pages back:

I'm addicted to reading these. I check everyday.

(It's kind of fun being able to get those guilty Mary-Sue fantasies out there without actually publishing them!)

Posh Question

(Anonymous)
I'm not a total American idiot. Just a little.

I know (sort of) about class distinctions and I know what 'posh' means.

There's that cartoon with the all the girls like Benedict Cumberbatch because he has a posh name. I read descriptions in interviews, articles that say (paraphrasing) 'Cumberbatch, the man with the posh name,' 'He has a posh education,' etc.

Sometimes it sounds derogatory.

Am I reading too much into it or is it reverse snobbery?

Re: Posh Question

(Anonymous)
It can be used in a slightly derogatory way, as in, "Oh, they're just another bunch of posh gits" or similar. It can imply that they're so posh they've never had to learn about things like common sense or courtesy.

But if I say I'm going to a posh hotel (I wish) I just mean that it's upmarket and might have nice biscuits and tea things in the room.

Heads up people!

(Anonymous)
Anyone who has a WIP on part V, it's less than a 100 comments away from being maxxed out. Nows the time to write your update so you can link it as soon as the Part X goes up.

Conversing with characters

(Anonymous)
Does anyone else do this? One of the characters isn't doing what you want him or her to do so you sort of take them aside mentally and discuss it with them, try to figure out why they aren't doing what you want?

No?

Right. I'm insane, good to know.

Re: Conversing with characters

(Anonymous)
What, that's totally normal. I do it all the time. I usually let them talk so I can see what the hell they're thinking and then I'm like "no, no...we're doing this my way." And poke and prod and cajole until I get proper cooperation.

...are we both insane?

Titles

(Anonymous)
Sooo... this is random, but it's been bothering me and I'd appreciate if some Brit-anons could lay some knowledge on me.

At least in my neck of the woods, it's considered kind of... an insult, I suppose, if you refer to someone who has a doctorate (medical or academic) by just their last name.

That is, if I addressed a professor as "Witt", that would be a sign of disrespect and I'd probably get chewed out (or at the very least given a very frosty glare) and told it was, "Dr. Witt" or whatever, unless I was really close friends with them or something. (Which is a longish way of saying that Sherlock calling him "John" isn't a big deal, but other characters not using his title would be).

But I've noticed in the show that no one refers to Watson as "Dr. Watson", it's always just "Watson".

Is that normal? Is it considered not as big a deal in Britain? Is it not as disrespectful?

(This has seriously been bothering me for a ridiculously long time.)

Re: Titles

(Anonymous)
Although it's not as common as it used to be, calling people by just their last name is more usual in the UK that in North America. I mean, I know this isn't the 20s any more, ("I say, Anderson, you simply must stop talking. You're positively lowering the IQ of the entire street, darling.") (Okay, enough Sherlock channeled through Evelyn Waugh) but it's not unheard of. It's more common amongst public school types than your everyday oik. Which is kind of silly, when posh types can have names like Pendlebury-Featherstonehaugh (pronounced Fanshaw) and no one will bat an eye.

This is probably a stupid question, but...

What does NTAYRT mean?

Not the Anon You're Responding To, I think?

(I've run into more acronyms that I don't know here, so not a stupid question!)

Ooops Help finding a prompt that might not actually exist.

So I wrote this porny threesome fic with Sherlock and Mycroft doublepenetrating Fem!John. I thought I was doing it for a prompt, but now that I look back, I can't find the prompt I thought I was doing it for. The closest I can find is Sherlock arranging a birthday threesome for John, which isn't the situation of my fill at all.

Does anyone else remember this prompt? I looked through the filled prompts page, but no success.

Female Fans Of Sherlock

(Anonymous)
Inspired by (And also mentioned in the comment section there) the Personal Mary Sue Fantasy thread.

Isn't it beyond weird, beyond masochist that in a series so full of misogyny, written by Doyle, a dude who didn't believe in women's suffrage, there are so many of us females?

Is it what Cumberbatch said in an interview, 'Treat them mean, Keep them keen'?

Do you want to secretly teach him a lesson a la Irene Alder?

How many of us just want a hate fuck?

How many just admire the storytelling and can put the misogyny aside?

Re: Female Fans Of Sherlock

(Anonymous)
I'm in it for the plot and mystery and emotions between characters. The gender of those characters is immaterial to me.

Does anyone have a link to any of the Sherlock versions of Antoine Dodson-Run and Tell That gifs? I do recall seeing a couple of different ones but I can't find any now. :(

Personal Question

(Anonymous)
I had a pretty tough year in 2010 and I'm still having a hard time getting over it. I lost 4 friends in the space of a year (one dead, one's a rapist, one doesn't have a problem with that fact, and one left because I was legitimately treating him poorly)

Does anyone have any experience that remotely resembles any of that? How did you cope? I'm doing well most of the time but occassionally the bleakness of my situation just overwhelms me.

Re: Personal Question

Well, when I was 12, my sister, who was only 13 months older than me died. At the time I was friendless other than her and we were very close, especially towards the end when her illness made most of her friends afraid to play with her. Plus my parents were so devastated that I couldn't put my misery on them.

I coped by doing a 180 on my personality. Where before I kinda lived entirely in my head and didn't even think about what other people were doing or thinking (I'm aspie, though that diagnosis didn't exist back then), I decided I needed to learn how to socialize and make my own friends (I relied on her for that). I made goals for self-improvement and I worked damn hard on them.

I did get a certain amount of pity respite at school, which helped, but it was a very lonely year. I was able to get my act together and by the time I entered high school, and those years were very happy. In a lot of ways, her death made me a much stronger and more adequate person, though it was a heck of a kick in the pants.

recs requests?

(Anonymous)
Where is the best place for me to ask for recs? I don't want to prompt, really, I'm looking for already-written stuff, and anyway I'm looking for very general categories (the one that's preying on my mind right now is "all fic where John or Sherlock is transsexual"). I'm just afraid that at the rate I'm reading I'll never make it to the end of the meme if it keeps growing!

Thanks!

You can ask here. Just name what sort of thing you are looking for. I've read pretty widely and I can point you to the fics that exist, though I can't vouch for quality, as my tastes are considerably broader than some peoples.

I like reading prompts, and sometimes the conversations that go with them.
i mean, yeah, it'd be nice to get more fills, but I'm actually rather amused just by reading the prompts.

Me also, too, and such.

IT IS ADORABLE AND I LOVE THAT MATT SMITH CALLS HIM "SHIRLEY"

And I still kind of wish he'd been cast as Eleven. Though I'd settle for him being the next Master, too.

looking for a lost prompt...

(Anonymous)
So, way back somewhere probably a while ago, someone made a prompt along the lines of Anthea having face-blindness, and the reason she gave John a fake name is because she gives everyone a different name, and that's how she keeps track of who she's talking to.

Does anyone have a link to it? I've got an almost-done fill but it sort of happened by accident, so I don't have a backlink to the prompt.
