This is a place for all sorts of off-topic discussion.

You can post anon or un-anon, per your personal preference, as usual.

All I ask is that you stay civil and (hopefully) friendly.

If you also want to use this thread to try to find a beta for a fic, or ask a brit-pick-ish question, I think that would be an acceptable use. Have fun!

In need of inspiration?

(Anonymous)
Huge list of kinks: http://eliade.livejournal.com/472331.html#cutid1
(I know there used to be a famous lj post with a list of kink memes, and it linked to another famous lj post of kinks. not sure if this is the same one.)

http://www.humansexmap.com/
This was linked on an earlier part of the meme.

Um....this can become a resource thread in general, I guess.

Re: In need of inspiration?

(Anonymous)
Oh, I also found this essay on Delicious:
http://community.livejournal.com/shared_wisdom/3700.html
It's about writing kink. Good read.

The five people you meet on kink memes....

(Anonymous)
Just a weird idea I had. I've seen people do lists like "the five annoying internet commentators on every site" or "The 14 types of anime fangirl," and it got me thinking. I've been reading kink memes for a bit, and you do start to see patterns.

This is a) relatively unedited and b) not meant to offend. Maybe “Tropes of a kink meme” is the best way to describe this.

1) The Serial Prompter
Someone who takes full advantage of the Anonymous setting to prompt whatever comes into his/her head. Tends to prompt more than fill. Naturally, these types of posters are difficult to identify. As a kink meme goes on, the number of these prompters tends to increase.
Weakness: IP posting

2) The Serial Re-prompter
A relative of the Serial prompter listed above. This is the Anon who prompts the same prompt (or a close variant) to every part of the meme, often adding lengthy, whiny cries of "come on guise, fill" or "why hasn't this been filled yet?"
Weakness: Still not getting that fill

3) The Lengthy Prompter
The Anon who gives you paragraphs of detailed plot, world-building, or other lengthy requests.
Weakness: Still not getting that fill

4) The Unsure Prompter
"Uh, I'd like to see hurt/comfort with Character X and Character Y. Like, maybe X is sick and Y takes care of him, or maybe Y gets hurt on a mission, or X used to be abused by his evil ex/family/boss and Y helps him."
Variants: The Any-Pairing-Is-Fine Prompter

5) The Succinct Prompter
Opposite of the previous two prompters. This person limits him/herself to "X/Y, bloodplay" or a similarly open-ended prompt.

5) The Troll
Posts offensive prompts or comments just to stir up trouble.
Weakness: mods, intelligent thought

6) The Crack Prompter
Prompts full of non-sequiters, memes, drunken antics, physically impossible (or at least highly improbable) actions or bodily mutations, bizarre pairings, randomly generated prompts, etc.

7) The Let's Work Together Prompter
Posts open-ended, game-like prompts meant for multiple fills, i.e., one sentence stories, group-fic

8) The Inspired-By Prompter
A person who prompts for fics inspired by songs, poems, movies, fairy tales, pictures, etc.

9) The Crossover Prompter
Related to the previous prompter. As a meme goes on, the sorts of media being crossed over start to become more unique, unexpected, and just plain weird.

10) The Prompt-and-Write-Own-Fill Prompter
Two variants: Someone writes a prompt and, with a sigh, posts a few replies later, saying, "geez, I just filled my own prompt." The harder one to spot is the prompter who writes something, then posts the prompt and the fic, for reasons unknown.

11) the Technology Is Failing Me Prompter
Leads to many errant comments, replies to the wrong thread, etc

12) The Fame Whore Filler
On a strictly-Anon kink meme, this is the person who starts making a name for him/herself by un-Anon-ing or making up some sort of name or identifying marker.
Note that, on a non-Anon friendly kink meme, going un-Anon in and of itself is not a sign of fame whoring. This refers strictly to people who go un-Anon to draw attention to themselves.

13) The Not-Quite-Right Filler
A person who writes a fill in good faith, only to come back and realize they forgot or left out a significant part of the prompt, wrote the wrong pairing, etc

14) The Off-Topic Commenters
The people who start up a conversation in the prompt comments, often off-topic, that goes on long enough to start nesting.

~~~
And at this point I was feeling tired and pedantic. Any advice or additions?
Re: The five people you meet on kink memes....
(Anonymous)
...I feel like I should be insulted, but I'm too busy laughing. XD
And I believe I just gave you:
15) The Not-Answering-the-Question Commenter
Guilt, guilt, guilty, guilt
(Anonymous)
I'm utterly neglecting my other, non-fandom (specifically non-BBC Sherlock fandom) sites including a social board I've hosted for ten years. These are posters w/whom I've become flesh in blood friends, vacationed, etc.
I feel shame but my leisure time is limited and I want to be on sites regarding THIS fandom, godammit!
It's not my fault I couldn't get anyone fired up over there on this Sherlock thing. Tomorrow I swear I'll carve out an hour or two, drop in, say 'hi', catch up.
Sherlock would never feel this sort of silly self-condemnation.
Benedict's eyes...
(Anonymous)
Are the grey or blue? From what I've read so far, most writers consider them grey, but personally, I'd say they're perfectly blue.
What do you say? Grey, blue-grey, blue?
Re: Benedict's eyes...
(Anonymous)
Blue-grey :) I'd say Hugh Laurie has blue eyes. BC's are less saturated and more pale blue-grey. (I think that's the color many call plain "grey" because obviously nobody has actually steel-grey eyes.)
Re: Benedict's eyes... (Anonymous) Expand
Is it just my family being weird? Because - we never run out of milk.
I am lactose intolerant so I avoid it which leaves my parents that drink it with their coffee and occasionally with their buiscits/cake. I'd think that's about similiar to the amount that Sherlock and John would consume. So why are those two constantly out of milk? (Or at least, that is what fandom suggests ;D)
We just buy a whole palette of milk and it stays fresh as long as it is unopened for several months. When we see the packages will be all gone soon we just buy another palette.
Do they only have super-fresh milk in the UK or what exactly am I missing? xD
Yes, this is stupid, but it bugs me for some reason.
Re: Milk
(Anonymous)
Long-life or UHT milk would last for ages, but I'm guessing they buy fresh milk, which lasts a few days, maybe a week, in the fridge.
Getting pints of milk delivered to your doorstep in the wee small hours is slightly less common than it once was, but still happens a lot; it's a good way of avoiding running out :-) Much less likely to happen in central London though (I've *never* seen a milk float doing the rounds in London, and anyway, someone'd nick it off the doorstep in Baker Street).
The upshot is, if one of them doesn't pop to a supermarket every few days, then yeah, they'd probably run out of milk :-)
Sherlocking
(Anonymous)
What the heck happened to that site?
The notice that they'd been hacked and will be up in a couple days has been up for months now.
A mod from a different site mentioned something on Twitter and one of the Sherlocking mods popped up and gave an incredibly snotty answer, basically saying they all had lives and maybe it was time to take a break from SHERLOCK ANYWAY, HMMMPH!
Seems an odd time, now that there is so much interest. Why don't they just hire someone to reformat the site, charge a small dues if money is the problem and find a more helpful, safer host?
It was one of the best Sherlock sources on the web. A shame.
Re: Sherlocking
(Anonymous)
Last thing I read was that they wanted to bring back the site during the holiday period but probably not the forum because the mod thinks it's too much work to organize it...
You should keep an eye on http://shaddicted.tumblr.com/, they were a member of Sherlocking and often post news about the site.
Searching for medical kink fic...
(Anonymous)
Okay, I am going nuts here.
I am searching for a certain fic. BBC Sherlock, with John having a medical kink. He convinces Sherlock that he needs to check him thoroughly every month or so. They have 2 or 3 check-ups and Sherlock wonders a little but doesn't think it too off, because he doesn't know how these check-ups should go. Then he's waiting for John one day and John all innocently gives him drugged tea for the wait and Sherlock wakes up to find himself strapped down tightly. And then lots and lots of medical torture stuff happens.
I have searched EVERY sherlock or sherlock holmes or holmes/watson or sherlock/john meme I could find. Every post, every delicious archive.
AND I WON'T FIND THIS FIC. I have started blaming my computer, the internet, the grumpy old man living across this street and because there's no one home right now I'm swearing all sorts of stuff together.
PLEASE, someone help me find this fic or point it out to me or ANYTHING like that.
Re: Searching for medical kink fic...
I have this fic mem'ed! A Thorough Examination.
Re: THE PPC HAS INVADED
(Anonymous)
Just to be sure I'm clear on your proposal, you're going to make fun of people who are trying their best to fill prompts and write fanfic if their best isn't up to your standards, and troll their fic?
I hope I've misunderstood you, because that doesn't sound like an idea to be encouraged at all. It sounds like an idea that would scare self-conscious and nervous writers (as well as ESL writers) away from writing fills, no matter what their writing quality really is. Most authors are very nervous about posting because they already criticise themselves harshly, and knowing there's an individual or group lurking around waiting to mock them would not be helpful in any way. We want to try to encourage fills, not scare away authors.
As I said, I do hope I've misunderstood you.
Unsure if this is the proper spot but...
There's a fic I wanted to fill, and I believe that it was on part 8- a fic where Sherlock=Batman and Watson=Superman, only I didn't bookmark that prompt then as I had no ideas on how I could fill it.
Then I had a brainstorm, and realized I had NO IDEA where the prompt had gone.
My question is: Do I ask about it here? Do I post a req on the main page (non anon) and then delete it as soon as I get an answer? Do I ask a mod?
Thank you for everything~ This is one of my fav kink memes, everyone's so friendly!
Re: Unsure if this is the proper spot but...
(Anonymous)
You could try doing searches in the 'Filled Prompts' post. It's got one line summaries for every prompt.
Is it canon or fanon that Sherlock's violin is a Stradivarius? I can't remember.
BBC? Fanon. ACD? No idea.
I wanna know!
(Anonymous)
How it is it that Sherlock can afford his silk dressing gown, £150 shirts and £1300 coat, and his expensive microscopes (just bought one, even bottom of the line is ouchy, one that he'd need would be well up there). And eating out. And cab rides. And tipping his homeless brigade. And forgetting to pick up the moneys people are paying you.
How can he afford to do that, and still need a roommate? Especially one who was living off a military pension.
Admit it Sherlock, you were lonely. Or you wanted someone who you could sucker into the housekeeping.
Re: I wanna know!
(Anonymous)
I always assumed he either received his clothing as a reward for doing cases, and silently disappeared the microscopes from Bart's or Mycroft buys him his clothing much to Sherlock's annoyance.
Right In The Kisser
(Anonymous)
I like the dichotomy of Sherlock's kissing technique from fan fic to fan fic.
In some, he's the worst, Practically breaking the partner's nose on his cheekbones.
In others his kisses are wet, sweet and soulful or are after the first kiss because he's such a quick learner.
I don't know. In my experience, once a lousy kisser, always a lousy kisser.
I'd like to hear your takes on the Sherlock Holmes smooching proficiency, please
Hmm...so I'm here to apologize for sort of sniping a prompt. Another anon promised to fill it really quickly and was really into it, but I was inspired and posted my fill anyway. Just excited, I guess. But...I hope I didn't discourage anon from filling too. Anon seems to have disappeared and hasn't posted the promised fill.
Maybe anon isn't finished and my guilt is making me apologize too hastily, but if I did turn anon off the prompt I'm really really sorry. Please come back!
Can you give us a hint which prompt it was?
If someone compliments your stuff by saying 'I liked your version of Character X...' does that mean your fic was out of character? D:
That could really go either way.
Captcha: beings Firthy (is that an alien race populated entirely by species that are like Colin Firth? Cause.... I could get behind that.)
